15 Celebs Who Were Completely Miscast In These 2018 Films

Casting is probably one of the most challenging parts of making a movie and the people in charge of it are totally under-appreciated. When you think about it, picking the right actor for the right role is probably the biggest factor for whether a film flops or becomes a major hit. It's a real shame that casting directors don't get Oscars or as much recognition as other professionals within the film industry. When you see an actor cast in a perfect role, you don't really notice it that much. But when an actor is miscast, suddenly, it becomes obvious how important casting really is. And there are plenty of examples of that in the past.

2018 is shaping up to be a great year for moviegoers. We've already had quite a few hits and there are more are on the way. We're still waiting for the Han Solo movie, Deadpool 2, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, to name but a few. But along with all the hype surrounding these movies, there are also some serious questions being asked about the casting decisions. Was Josh Brolin really the best choice to play Cable? Will Jude Law make a good young Dumbledore? All of this remains to be seen. Here are some of 2018's biggest miscasts.

15 Jennifer Lawrence – Russian Spy From Red Sparrow

via: people.com

Another big movie starring a very talented, blonde actress is Red Sparrow. This movie stars none other than Jennifer Lawrence and is out in theaters right now. The movie centers on a Russian ballet dancer who must find another way to support her ailing mother. She ends up becoming a spy for the USSR, and the movie takes a wild ride filled with intrigue, romance, and tons of action. The film is definitely one that is being talked about a lot right now.

However, the reviews haven't been great. Some say that it's a powerful movie with brilliant acting, while others have accused J-Law of "floundering" in this particular role. There have been many points raised, but some say that it relies too heavily on shocking scenes. Others have noted that Jennifer Lawrence might have been miscast in the role, and she doesn't make a believable spy — or a believable Russian, for that matter.

14 Alden Ehrenreich – Han Solo

via: flickreel.com

We're all well aware that the latest Disney Star Wars reboots have been getting a very mixed response, particularly from mega fans of this age-old sci-fi franchise. This is, of course, nothing new, as the general consensus is that the original trilogy of movies were perfect films that can never be improved on. The latest film, The Last Jedi, probably got the worst response of any Star Wars film yet, and the concerns raised about it are endless. But Disney is said to be bracing for yet another flop, with the upcoming release of its Han Solo movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The titular role is played by Alden Ehrenreich. From the moment that this was announced, fans had major concerns that the role was being miscast. He doesn't really look or sound anything like Harrison Ford's Han, and he's lacking that charm and attitude that makes Han who he is. The latest trailers just confirm these worries, but who else would they have cast? Harrison Ford is such a unique actor that pretty much anyone would have been miscast in the role of Han Solo...

13 Alicia Vikander – Lara Croft

via: scoopnest.com

Another movie that has a lot of people excited is the latest Lara Croft movie. This has been a massive franchise for many years, and it all started with a classic video game from the '90s. Some of the past Lara Croft movies have been incredible, and this is one reboot that people might actually enjoy. If this is done right, we might just see another swashbuckling, high octane, fast-moving film that will blow us all away. But a lot has changed over the years.

Sadly, we will not see Angelina Jolie reprise her role as the Tomb Raider. This is pretty understandable since Angelina is not as young as she used to be. In her place we have Alicia Vikander, who many say is not right for the role. Maybe we're just too used to seeing Angelina in that iconic outfit. But on the other hand, there are some notable differences between Vikander and the trademark Lara Croft look. One thing that a lot of people are saying is that Alicia Vikander is a little too slim since Lara Croft has always been quite the curvy figure, even in her very first video game iterations...

12 Jude Law – Dumbledore

via: popsugar.com

Dumbledore is a character that many of us grew up with. If you didn't read the Harry Potter books, you probably saw the movies, and so you're very much familiar with this lovable old wizard. Harry Potter fans are very excited these days because a new Potter movie is slated for a 2018 release. The film, which is called Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, will feature a young Dumbledore, who will be played by Jude Law.

Many people have raised concerns that Jude Law is not right for the role. Dumbledore has always struck us as a pretty rough figure, one that didn't really care much to charm others or keep up with appearances. And Jude Law has always maintained a very clean, handsome visage. Surely, a more rugged actor would be better suited to this role? Furthermore, Jude Law's personality and vibe don't really strike us as what a young Dumbledore would be like.

11 Bryce Dallas Howard – Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

via: ew.com

Another film that is set to hit theaters in 2018 is the movie Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. This is the follow up to the previous hit and many are really excited about it. Some would say that 2015's Jurassic World was a little mediocre and didn't manage to recapture the charm of the original. Regardless, we think it's safe to say that plenty of people will be lining up to see this one.

One of the most criticized parts of the original Jurassic World was the inclusion of Bryce Dallas Howard. While she's a fine actress, many felt that she was miscast in the film. Something that is constantly brought up is the fact that she seemed to constantly be running away from dinosaurs while wearing heels. While she probably won't be repeating this in the sequel (or will she?), she will be returning for another shot at this character.

10 Josh Brolin – Cable

via: wallpapersite.com

One of the most hyped-up movies of 2018 is Deadpool 2. This movie is set to lure in countless moviegoers worldwide after the immense success of the first film. Marvel took a risk with the first Deadpool, but their doubts have been proven totally wrong. The majority of people loved the film, and so you can expect a film with a much higher budget and a lot of new faces. Among these new faces is Deadpool's most famous partner in crime, Cable.

The majority of people have probably never heard of Cable, and are unfamiliar with who he is and what that character represents. But comic book veterans know this guy as one of the most famous and most powerful X-Men that ever lived. Josh Brolin was cast as Cable, which has left a lot of people scratching their heads. It's not that he was necessarily a bad choice, but he wasn't a great one either. Cable is supposed to be this massive, hulking super soldier, and Brolin looks a little weak in comparison. And they had plenty of other amazing options. Tons of people are saying that Stephen Lang, who played Colonel Quaritch in Avatar, would have been a much more obvious choice, and we have to agree.

9 Jason Momoa – Aquaman

via: releasemama.com

Another big movie slated for a release in 2018 is Aquaman. You might be noticing a theme in this article— we're picking on a lot of comic book movies. That's simply because it's easy to attack their casting decisions. It's not like when a book is turned into a movie and all we have to go on is the descriptions of the author. In comic books, the character is actually illustrated in stunning detail, and so if an actor or actress doesn't match the artist's imagination, the decision to cast them is immediately attacked.

Jason Momoa is probably going to do an amazing job as Aquaman. But does he look like the guy in the comics? Not really. Although Aquaman has gone through a lot of different iterations in the graphic novels, none of them really look too much like Jason Momoa. This has led to a lot of comic book fans claiming that he was miscast and that another actor probably would have been a better choice. But this is going to be one of those movies where we'll have to wait and see before we make a final judgment...

8 Bobby Cannavale – Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle

via: epsilonreviews.com

One of the most talked about movies of 2018 so far is Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. This film is yet another reboot of an earlier classic that many of us remember from our childhood days, which seems to be the most common (or only) tactic of Hollywood these days. Regardless, the film has been moderately successful and many enjoyed it. But others aren't so sure, claiming that the film was a mockery of the original and got everything wrong.

One of the biggest talking points is the film's villain, played by Bobby Cannavale. Some say he was miscast in this role because he is supposed to be goofy and wacky when that's not really what he's known for in his past acting roles. There wasn't much he could do to save the character's reputation though because the script made it so that the villain didn't actually have much of a role to play throughout the entire movie.

7 Margot Robbie – Tonya Harding

via: wordpress.com

One of the newest movies out right now is I, Tonya, starring the very talented, Margot Robbie. This movie is based on real events and incidents that surrounded one of the most infamous figure skaters of all time, Tonya Harding. This figure skater was an American Olympic athlete, and her desire to win was at an extreme level. Her biggest rival on the ice was famously attacked by armed men, who injured her knees and prevented her from competing.

It's a great story and one that definitely deserves a movie deal. It's out in theaters right now, and it's getting generally good reviews. But some have raised concerns that Margot Robbie might have been miscast in this role. For one, she is much taller than Tonya Harding. Secondly, her skating skills are not up to par. And lastly, she is arguably much more attractive than the real Tonya Harding. While some of these things are understandable, the miscasting was too much for some fans to get over.

6 Martin Freeman – Black Panther CIA Agent

via: pinterest.com

It seems like all anyone can talk about right now is Black Panther. The film has really made its mark on film history, and people are loving it. It's hard to remember a Marvel movie with as big of an impact, and we're sure that we're going to be seeing a lot more Black Panther movies in the future. One character that played a moderately important role was Agent Ross, a CIA Agent played by the veteran actor, Martin Freeman.

Many comic book fans will note that the Agent Ross from the comic books is very different than the way Freeman portrayed him. Some would say that the role was miscast. Freeman admitted that he changed the character to his liking, saying "I, to be honest, wasn't massively keen to play that. I certainly wasn't massively keen to play that in the context of Black Panther. Just because I think the trope of a nervous white guy, cool black guy, we've seen it a million times before breakfast. So yeah, I wasn't mostly keen."

5 Bruce Willis – Death Wish

via: ew.com

Bruce Willis is probably one of the biggest action heroes ever to act in Hollywood, and in 2018 he's returning yet again with another movie called Death Wish. This film promises to deliver the same punch that Willis is famous for, and it looks to be very similar to the movies that have starred him in the past like Die HardLooper, and Hostage. While there's nothing wrong with using the same, tried and true formula, again and again, we're wondering if this is really the right choice for Bruce Willis.

There's no denying that he's getting old. While it breaks our hearts to say it, he looks more like a confused, angry turtle than the action hero that we all grew up with. So is it time for Bruce Willis to give action movies a break? We think so. There are plenty of other actors which would have probably been more suitable for roles like this. There's no denying that Bruce Willis is a great actor. Maybe he should try his hand at other genres going forward.

4 Zazie Beetz – Domino

via: twitter.com

This is the last comic book character, we promise. Deadpool 2 will introduce not one but two new characters to its lineup, and after Cable, there is Domino. Fans of the comic will know this character very well, as she's a central figure to Deadpool's adventures on the comic book pages. Her power is that she can emit a "probability field," which basically means that her superpower is that she's really lucky. Don't worry, it's cooler than it sounds.

One of the most controversial decisions in Deadpool's casting was the choice to cast Zazie Beetz as Domino. Fans of the comic immediately pointed out the notable differences in appearance between the comic book version of Domino and the actress slated to play her. This pretty much comes down to the fact that Zazie Beetz is African American, and Domino is seemingly Caucasian, which tells you why this whole debacle was so controversial. We're sure that Beetz will do a great job at playing Domino, but does she look like the comic book character? No. And that's why some people say that she was miscast.

3 Paul Rudd – Cactus Bill

via: releasemama.com

One of the most talked about Netflix Originals in recent times is undoubtedly their new movie, Mute. This film is hard to classify, and it has elements of many different movies laced with it. Blade Runner's influence on the film's visual style is plain to see, but the story has nothing to do with technology and its implications. Instead, the film is more of a character-driven drama. Critics have not been kind to the film, and it's been getting very low scores.

Paul Rudd appears in the movie as a very interesting character called Cactus Bill. If you know Paul Rudd, you know that he's best-known for playing quirky characters and likable leading men. This is not one of those roles. Rudd instead plays a psychopath and murdered, although his character is very complex and not a stereotypical villain by any stretch of the imagination. The question is...why did they cast him as a character like this if he's not known for roles like this? Even though it's not what we're used to from this character, many have praised his performance.

2 Jennifer Jason Leigh – Annihilation

via: slashfilm.com

Another huge movie that has just hit theaters is Annihilation. The film is another enticing sci-fi flick in the same vein as the newest Alien movie, with a touch of Avatar mixed in for good measure. Natalie Portman takes center stage as the leader of an all-female squadron of individuals who were sent to investigate a mysterious presence after a meteor crash. Whatever it is, ends up infecting Natalie Portman's husband with some type of illness, and her character is desperate to find out the truth.

One of the film's supporting characters is a "laconic" psychologist played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. She introduces the main character to a team of researchers, and then she too decides to go in and help discover the secret. Many have commented that Jennifer Jason Leigh seems out of place in this role, and indeed the entire movie. She doesn't seem like the type that would be involved in this kind of adventure.

1 Dylan O'Brien – American Assassin

via: inverse.com

Another movie that you might have seen recently is American Assassin. This film actually came out in 2017, but it was still playing in theaters in the early part of 2018. The film is based on a very long series of books written by an author that died recently of cancer in 2013. The books are a little bit like The Bourne Identity franchise or James Bond but with a little more grittiness. But while other movies based on books succeeded in bringing the super spy vibe to the big screen, this one didn't do so well.

A lot of that probably had to do with the casting of the main character. Dylan O'Brien plays Micheal Rapp, a man who has lost everything. Those who have seen the movie have described this character as a "hipster James Bond," which is kind of a contradiction. The character in the book is supposed to be this hyper-intelligent human weapon, but the movie only succeeds in making him look tough. This character probably could have been played by another actor with greater effect.
