There are many decisions that you need to make once you learn the news that you are potentially going to become a parent. And while it may not be as important as other elements, such as making sure you and your partner are doing all you can to improve your overall health, one of the biggest decisions comes when you have to decide on a name.
It is very possible there are names that you have "picked out" for your children for decades. But if that is the case, let's just hope that you end up starting a family with someone who also appreciates those names. Because while many of the names on the list have been credited to one partner - like Chris Martin for naming his child that he had with Gwyneth Paltrow, Apple - it is something that both of you should hopefully like.
If you are looking for help when it comes to deciding on a name, one thing that a lot of people do is look to influential family members for inspiration. Such as Blake Lively who managed to help mend the gap between Ryan Reynolds and his father, James, and as a result they named their daughter James.
Though if you did not have any family members that stood out to you, influential people may also fit that bill, like John Legend who looked to Miles Davis for inspiration. That being said, you may get people to raise their eyebrows, at least a little bit if you decided to use some celebrities for inspiration when naming your child, like Jason Lee who named his son Pilot Inspektor!
These are 12 celebrities with unusual baby names and 12 with common ones.
Gwyneth Paltrow knows that she has definitely raised some eyebrows over the years when she went ahead and named her child, Apple. But when she was talking to Howard Stern about the name, she did admit that it was actually Chris Martin who had suggested the unique name. Though Paltrow did explain back in 2012 why she loves the name so much,
“I loved it straightway. I thought it was so unique and sounded cool. She is nearly eight now and it fits her so perfectly. I can’t imagine her being called anything else.”
Let's hope that Apple does not have any issues with her name as she gets older and also has an appreciation for the unique nature of it.
Kylie Jenner definitely picked something unusual when she went ahead with the name Stormi. But the reasoning behind the name is something that most parents may be able to relate to when they came up with the name of their own child,
"I really don’t know how we thought of Storm. Her dad insisted it was him, but I feel like it was me. And that kind of just stuck with us... I feel like Stormi picked her own name, like it was just her name," as Kylie did admit that there were other names (though she did not disclose what ones) that she liked even better.
The most high-profile relationship that Levi Johnston engaged in was with Bristol Palin, but that is not who he is spending his life with, as Levi got married to Sunny Oglesby back in October 2012. They have two children together, one of whom they gave an understandably cute name of Indy Rae. But before they had Indy, they decided to take inspiration from an unusual place for the naming of their first child when they were inspired from the world of guns with the name, Breeze Beretta. You just have to hope that Levi doesn't find another gun he loves more or a future child may also be inspired by a gun. At least Beretta is the middle name!
Regardless of your opinion on his music, it is hard to deny that Tyga has not found success in his career. Though Tyga has also had some moments in his life where he has done things that have made people question his judgment. But when it comes to his child, King Cairo, at least he seems to have the right attitude about it, even if the name is unusual,
“He makes me step back and really enjoy life. That’s what life is about. You bring something into the world like that, your whole world kind of stops. It slows down and you look at everything differently,”
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale have not been upfront about why they went with the name Zuma Nesta Rock, but it is believed that Gavin was at Zuma Beach which is located in Malibu when he realized he needed to make significant changes to his life if he was going to get to the places that he wanted to with his career. If that is the case, I'm sure naming his son Zuma is a great reminder as to the importance of making sure you take action when life presents you the opportunity. Something that I am sure is a lesson that both Gwen and Gavin have passed on to their children.
When Cardi B let the world know the name of her son, it was through a series of very revealing Instagram photos. But maybe she was just figuring if anyone had any criticism over her name that they would perhaps be distracted by the photos. Cardi explained her reasoning for the name, saying
"Anything else woulda been basic,"
With an attitude like that, you can imagine if she ever gets pregnant again that they will also try and stray from having a "basic name". She has also admitted in the past that the inspiration for the name did not come from her, but actually from her partner, Offset.
Leave it to Beyoncé and Jay-Z to come up with a name for their child that was unlike any other when they decided to go with Blue Ivy. It is believed that Beyoncé was inspired by the novel "A Field Guide To Getting Lost" which was written by Rebecca Solnit, as Beyonce shared an excerpt of it online,
"The world is blue at its edges and in its depths…The blue at the farthest reaches of the places where you see for miles, the blue of distance....This light does not touch us, does not travel the whole distance, the light that gets lost, gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is in the color blue."
Rob Kardashian could work incredibly hard for the next year of his life and probably still not come close to the level of legacy that is being left behind by his sisters. But if Rob needed to focus on something to be happy about, perhaps he can try and think about the child he has with Blac Chyna. When trying to attain details about the family, a source close to Chyna reached out to US Magazine saying
“Dream was Rob’s favorite name because it was always his dream to have a baby,”
Let's hope that even if Rob's relationship with Blac Chyna has definitely not always been smooth - including him currently being single - that he still feels that way about his child!
To be fair if you wanted to give your child a name that was based around a bird, there are definitely a lot of things you could go with that are a lot more unusual than calling your child Sparrow. But perhaps Joel Madden and Nicole Richie are just keeping their options open for the future! When discussing the reasoning behind the name choice, Nicole mentioned that her other child's name being Harlow was an influence in their decision making,
"We have different tastes in names. Sparrow was one we both liked. I liked the way it sounded with Harlow, and there's the Captain Jack Sparrow connection."
There may have been many songs in your life that have been influential to you. But I don't know if there is any one song that stands out to you enough that it has inspired you when it comes to naming your children. But for Jason Lee, it was a song off the album The Sophtware Slump from the musical band Granddaddy that inspired the unusual moniker for his son
"The opening track, 'He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot,' absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it. It was from this track that my wife, Beth, came up with the name Pilot for our son."
One of the most beautiful things you can get to experience in your life is a rainbow. Which may be why when Holly Madison was thinking about what she wanted to name her child, that she wanted to think of something that was also beautiful. Though considering her other child (not pictured) is named Forest, perhaps she just loved names that were related to the outdoors. When talking about the hopes she has for Rainbow, Madison said
“I want Rainbow to learn to be verbal and stand up for herself,” she said. “If I could go back, I’d be a lot more outspoken...I want her to be confident."
Khloe Kardashian knew that no matter whatever name she ended up using for her child that the tabloid media was going to weigh in on it. But if she ever had any doubts about it, she can at least say it is a family name,
"Picking a name for your child is really so tough! I knew I wanted my baby to have a 'T' initial, so one night while we were all at dinner, thinking of some names, my Grandma M.J. suggested True," as True was the first name of her great-grandfather as well as the middle name of his grandfather.
Carrie Underwood recently made headlines when she announced that she and her husband, Mike Fisher, are going to become parents for the 2nd time. Something that I am sure will have an influence on the type of music she is inspired to create, which will hopefully be a good thing in your opinion. The first time around the couple came up with the fantastic name, Isaiah. But perhaps that just means the pressure is on for them to come up with an amazing name for this child as well! Though something tells me that they are up for the task.
Anne Hathaway and Adam Schulman came up with one of the more common names when they decided that Jonathan was the perfect choice for their son. But they did end up adding a little bit of flair to it, as the full name of their child is Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman. Though it's pretty sweet when you learn that the maiden name of his mother was Banks and the paternal grandfather for Anne was named Roseline.
At the time it was reported that the two would be open to having more children, but as of now, they just have the one.
When Kiefer Sutherland sat down for an interview back in 2005 he gave fans the opportunity to ask him questions that they may have for him. And while you may have many questions for him, such as about his experiences on 24, one fan reached out to him inquiring as to why he decided to go with the name Sarah for his daughter,
"Her name is Sarah Jude (Jude after my best friend, Jude Ironside) because that was what we thought fit when we saw her."
I am sure his friend Jude also took it as quite a compliment that Kiefer felt close enough to use their name.
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are a tremendous example of what it means to treat your partner with love and respect. Which means you might not be surprised that when it came to discussing where the name Miles came from John explained that it was a team effort,
"Every name we give to our kids will have a bit of musical history to it. So Miles, of course, is the same name as the great Miles Davis. And Chrissy really liked the name Theodore, so we put it all together and got Miles Theodore Stephens. When he came out and we hung out with him for a little, we were like, ‘He looks like a Miles.'"
It is very clear that Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling love the name Amanda, as they named their first child Esmeralda Amanda. And then when it came for their 2nd child, they bumped Amanda up to the #1 spot, going with Amanda. When discussing the process, Eva said
"My grandmother's name is Amada, and Esmeralda Amada is the name of our oldest. We had a few names picked out for our new baby, and when she was born, we didn't feel like those names were her...We came up with a few more, even that morning, and tried them out. We were like, 'What about Viviana?' But we just kept going back to Amanda."
There are many adorable couples in Hollywood but if your favorite couple is Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, there are plenty of reasons why. Such as their children, one of whom they named James and one Inez. Ryan admitted in the past that he had a tough relationship with his now late father, James, that was mended by Blake, so they thought the name would be a nice homage,
“It felt right. All family relationships come with some complications. For better or worse, all roads lead to here. At the end of the day, it’s easier to focus on the good stuff than the bad. My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he got to see her, which makes me happy.”
Benedict Cumberbatch already had a large amount of attention due to roles like Sherlock that must have only been magnified by his role as Doctor Strange. Some of the negatives of such a big spotlight is that people have thought that his marriage to Sophie Hunter and their son Christopher were a P.R. Stunt,
"There are people who believe that my wife is a P.R. stunt and my child is a P.R. stunt. I think really it's to do with the idea that the 'Internet's boyfriend' can't actually belong to anyone else but the Internet...It's impossible he belongs to anyone but me. And that's what stalking is. That's what obsessive, deluded, really scary behavior is."
I wonder what they thought about his other son, Hal!
It is the start of another NFL season and just as it has been for as long as you may be able to remember, that means Tom Brady is set to go and tear the league apart again. But Tom would not be able to do what he does without the amazing support of his wife Gisele Bündchen. Who I'm sure among her talents of being a world-class model, also include being a tremendous parent to their children Vivian and Benjamin. Both of whom I'm sure also serve as an extra bit of motivation for Tom Brady to continue pushing himself. Brady also has a child with Bridget Moynahan who was born in 2007 and named John.
There are many amazing animated films that have been created by Disney over the years. But one of the most recent ones that really stood out, especially in comparison to animated films from other companies, was Zootopia. The movie ended up being a monster at the box office, earning over $1 billion by the time all was said and done. Which I'm sure was news that made the lead of the film, Ginnifer Goodwin, ecstatic to hear. Which means I'm sure her whole family, that includes her husband Josh Dallas and their sons, Oliver and Hugo, can get behind her doing a possible sequel.
Penélope Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem have many things in their life that they love, but in contrast to some celebrities in Hollywood, they both seem to also value their privacy. Which is definitely understandable if they feel that is something that helps them be a better family, which I'm sure would also be the top priority for both of them. They have a son and a daughter. And while I don't know if you love their son's name more, Leo, or the name that they chose to give to their daughter, Luna, they are both great choices if you are looking for a normal name.
When it comes to Scarlett Johansson in 2018, the relationship that she is focusing on is not the one that she had with Romain Dauriac, whom she was married to from 2014-2017. Instead, Scarlett is in a relationship with Colin Jost who is one of the stars on the television program, Saturday Night Live. Which I am sure means that he is surely able to keep Scarlett laughing during what may be stressful moments in her life. But Scarlett hopefully keeps a strong relationship with Romain, as the two are parents to their daughter Rose, whom Scarlett gave birth to in 2014.
Of all the celebrities on this list who perhaps deserve your seal of approval when it comes to giving their children normal names, nobody may deserve it more than Mark Wahlberg and his wife, Rhea Durham, who he got married to back in 2009. The couple has 4 children together and none of them have names that you would probably consider abnormal, as they have gone with Michael and Brendan for their two sons. The daughters also have great names, going with Ella and Grace. And while Wahlberg has been known to have some misses with his movies, I'm sure his big family is always a fan!
