Once you hit the A-list as an actress, the image the public gets is all smiles. With perfect make-up, hair, and nails, and a killer wardrobe, they pose on the red carpet, and push their latest projects on TV talk shows. But, as we all know, a smile can hide a lot.

After a few years in show biz, no matter how controlled your PR campaign may be, the leaks will come. Whether it’s cast mates on your movie and TV shoots, or the assistant you hire to run your errands while you’re busy on camera, someone, sooner or later, is sure to talk. That’s when the truth comes out.

Sometimes, the smiling face hides a huge ego and emotional issues that make working and dealing with them difficult — to say the least. In other cases, the smile isn’t a disguise at all, and underneath the glamour, you’ll find a down to earth person who’s managed to stay sane in a crazy business.

Here’s a look at some of our fave celebs and what the rumors, reports, and gossip say about who they really are — angel or diva.

Prima Donna: Teri Hatcher Does Not Play Well With Others

Actress Teri Hatcher has played many roles on TV and movies, most recently as Rhea on Supergirl, but is probably best known for her starring turn on Desperate Housewives from 2004 to 2012. It's from that set that we first heard stories about Teri’s allegedly questionable behavior with co-stars. They tried, but no one ever ferreted out exactly what happened between Teri and co-stars Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, and Marcia Cross. According to a TV Guide reporter, some kind of incident led to a permanent rift. According to reports, off camera, Teri kept strictly to herself and her cast mates stayed clear. The ill will cut deep, apparently. When the show ended, the entire cast sent series creator Marc Cherry a thank you gift — and Teri’s was the only name that didn’t appear on the card.

Prima Donna: Katherine Heigl Shoots Foot

Katherine Heigl is set to jump back into the spotlight as the replacement for Meghan Markle, the new Duchess of Sussex, on Suits. But, we’re wondering if her reputation as being difficult to deal with will follow her. Katherine rose to fame during her days starring on Grey’s Anatomy. During the 2008-09 season, Katherine made a public statement about the fact that she was withdrawing her name from consideration for an Emmy Award, because she thought the material — written by Shonda Rhimes — wasn’t up to par. Not a good way to make friends on set, we’re guessing. Fox News reported that, while she was filming 27 Dresses, Katherine would refuse to begin shooting until her pregnant assistant had found her a Coke Zero, and once the cameras were off, she refused to speak to anyone on set, or let them so much as sit beside her. We’ll soon know whether she’s learned from the experience.

Class Act: Taylor Swift's Fans Love Her

Sure, she regularly has beefs with other pop stars, and disses her ex boyfriends in her song lyrics. But you’d be hard pressed to find a celeb who gives her fans as much love a T Swift, and that’s what puts her on the sweetheart list. There are many examples. She once dropped by a fan's wedding in Ohio, has consoled a fan over a bad relationship on Twitter, and even flew one of her fans and his family to New York City for one of her concerts. She's had listening parties for superfans in her own home, baked cookies for them, and a whole lot more — most of it captured on social media. She’s also been honored many times for her work with various charities.

Class Act: Sarah Jessica Parker Really Is Nice

Despite a notable recent feud with former cast mate Kim Cattrall, by all (other) accounts, Sarah Jessica Parker is one of the nicest people you’d ever get to work with on set. She’s said to have a fun personality and is still down to Earth. In person, she doesn’t come across as phony, despite all the exposure and accolades she’s received over the years — and despite the nasty Internet trolling she’s been subjected to as well. In fact, until the recent public beef with Kim, the stories from the Sex and the City shoots were all positive. Sarah was said to go the extra mile to make sure everyone she worked with was happy. And, she’s always been accessible to the fans who love her.

Prima Donna: Is Gwyneth Paltrow The Most Hated Celebrity?

It’s hard to remember that, when she first started appearing on movie screens, Gwyneth Paltrow was considered America’s sweetheart. That was back in the 1990s, when she was dating the likes of Brad Pitt. Fast forward to 2013, when Star Magazine declared her to be The Most Hated Celebrity in Hollywood. What happened? Star cited an arrogant and pretentious attitude with co-stars as one of the main reasons for earning the title. It doesn’t end there, however. Since founding Goop.com in 2008 and becoming a self-styled lifestyle guru, she’s made a string of over the top statements that seem to bear out that impression, such as saying that she’d rather die than feed her kids Cup-a-Soup, or suggesting that she worked harder on movie sets than the average working woman. She seems to have no time for anyone who can’t afford Goop’s expensive lifestyle advice, including a cookbook where the meals cost out at about $300 in ingredients. It hasn’t endeared her to many people, let’s put it that way.

Prima Donna: Jennifer Lawrence Just Doesn’t Care

Jennifer Lawrence has the reputation of being the “most relatable” star. But that doesn’t mean she’s universally beloved. She’s notoriously rude to fans who approach her in public — and has admitted so in interviews — and is often horrible to reporters trying to interview her. At the Golden Globes ceremonies in 2016, she told off a member of the media from on stage for using their cell phone. It turns out the unfortunate foreign journalist was simply trying to get an automatic translation from a mobile phone app. She also didn’t win over public opinion with stunts like that time she bragged in an interview with Chris Pratt on the BBC in 2016 about desecrating rocks considered sacred in Hawaii while filming there in 2012 — classy. She was drinking wine and laughing as she described offending the native Hawaiians.

Class Act: Emma Watson Is A Role Model

Who doesn’t like Hermione, or Emma Watson, the actress who portrays her? She’s well known for her activism, which includes anti-war and feminist causes, and became the Women’s Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations so she could help the cause of gender equality worldwide. She’s campaigned for women’s global education rights and more through the UN’s #HeForShe initiative. Given a celebrity platform at such an early age, it’s great that she chose to use it for positive change. In person, she’s also known to be a real sweetheart, even to reporters and the press.

Class Act: Gina Rodriguez’ Traveling Dress

Gina Rodriguez has been acting since about 2004, but she’s best known for playing the lead role in CW’s Jane the Virgin since 2014. On the show, Jane is a sweet, passionate aspiring author and mother. In real life, Gina doesn’t have much trouble playing the cute and relatable character. When she won a Golden Globes Award in 2015, she impressed everyone with a speech that was inspiring and heartfelt. Then, in 2016, one of her fans contacted her on Twitter to ask if she could wear her Golden Globes dress to her own prom, and Rodriguez agreed right away. She went on to organize, with her fans, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Gina Golden Globes Dress, a social-media-fuelled effort that saw the dress making the rounds of several proms.

Prima Donna: Jenny’s Left The Block

Jennifer Lopez has developed a reputation for diva antics over the years that puts the lie to the Jenny from the block image she likes to cultivate. She's dissed fellow actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz in interviews. When she travels, she has a list of over the top demands, such as asking for all-white decor at every location she stays at when she's on tour.

It was reported that she refuses to speak directly to any service employees. On one flight, when the flight attendant asked her if she wanted a drink, J.Lo instructed her assistant to answer.

She also reportedly had a maid at a German hotel fired for simply asking for her autograph. In her autobiography, actress Rosie Perez complained about working with the Latina diva and her backstabbing backstage maneuvers.

Prima Donna: Charlize Theron Just Isn’t Very Nice

Charlize Theron was forced to make a statement in her own defence in 2014 after actress Tia Mowry told an interviewer with In Touch magazine about an incident that had occurred at SoulCycle. Tia says she was taking in a class at the indoor cycling gym when she approached Charlize.

“She wasn’t very nice to me. I said, ‘Hi,’ and she actually rolled her eyes

and said, ‘Oh, my God.’” Other reports claimed that Charlize was so put off by the encounter that she tried to get SoulCycle to actually ban Tia. It shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows the story about how Charlize was discovered in 1995 by an agent who couldn’t help but notice the blond beauty having a temper tantrum over a bank clerk who wouldn’t cash her check.

Class Act: Tyra Banks Breaks The Modelling Mold

The popular stereotype of models — especially supermodels — suggest they are self-centered people with petty ego issues. It’s not really fair, and Tyra Banks puts that old stereotype to shame. On her show, America’s Next Top Model, she's known to encourage contestants to be their best. She has long been an advocate of a more diverse definition of beauty, and that’s something she’s bringing to her show, now that she’s back at its helm in 2018. Tyra is also well known for her charity work, including the TZone, her own foundation created to help promote self esteem among preteens and teen girls.

Class Act: Oprah Winfrey’s Got Big Pockets

Try as they might, the celebrity rags have never found any really juicy negative tidbits to divulge about Oprah. That comes as no secret to her legions of beloved fans. But, it’s not just her persona they love. One of her claims to fame comes from her everyday generosity to audiences at her TV show tapings, which, over the years, included everything from diamonds, Spanx, and, in 2004, a new car each. With a net worth estimated at $2.9 billion, she's given away millions to various charities, including $2.5 million to the National Council of Negro Women, and $1 million to the Green Belt Movement International in Africa. She's funded her own charitable foundation to the tune of $240 million, with most of it estimated to go to Leadership Academy, the school she founded in South Africa.

Prima Donna: You Don’t Want To Mess With Christina Aguilera

Many other singers and other celebs have gone public with their views on Xtina. Apparently, she likes to blow off anyone who approaches her, including UK boy band The Wanted and actress Valerie Bertinelli. In a 2010 interview, she went off on a reporter who coughed near her. She's also had public feuds with other celebs, including a noteworthy ongoing feud with singer Pink. In fact, Pink claimed in a US Magazine interview that Christina tried to punch her out at one time. This is one lady you don't want to get on your bad side.

Prima Donna: Rachael Ray Stops Smiling When The Camera Is Off

Employees on TV and movie sets are typically asked to sign documents that essentially bar them from leaking set details to the public. It’s understandable. But, that rule doesn’t apply to audience members. Rachael Ray is all smiles and tried to exude an affable personality on camera. But, as reviewers on TripAdvisor reveal, what happens before the red light comes on is a different story.

“When she came out to greet the audience, she was cold, even seemingly annoyed that she had to do the show. She complained! She rolled her eyes and was not at all the perky, spunky personality we've come to know on her show.

After a few tapings we were able to see how she acted with her attentive staff. That was by far the most disheartening. She was firm, yes, but the real problem was her ungrateful attitude.”

Class Act: Lady Gaga Loves Her Little Monsters

Lady Gaga really made a splash on the pop music scene when she first shot to fame about a decade ago with outrageous antics and wardrobe as much as her ear worm hit tracks. The sensationalism has died down, but what has endured is Lady Gaga’s tight relationship with her fans — or the Little Monsters who call her Mother Monster. She stays in close touch with them via social media, and YouTube is full of videos of Gaga making nice with them in public, including bringing flowers to line-ups. At a concert in Connecticut in November 2017, she stopped the show when she saw one of her fans was injured to make sure she was all right.

Class Act: Even Drew Barrymore's Ex In-Laws Love Her

In an interview in 2015, talking about her co-star in the British movie Miss You Already, actress Toni Collette described Drew Barrymore in glowing terms.

“Drew is so easy going. She’s open and warm. I know Drew has been many things in her life, but she gives her all. She’s altruistic and always thinks of other people first.”

Even her ex in-laws love her. Former sister-in-law Jill Kargman wrote they were “forever sisters” in her 2016 memoir, Sprinkle Glitter On My Grave. During an appearance on The Late Late Show in March 2018, host James Corden forced the Santa Clarita Diet star to rank former co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Adam Sandler, and Hugh Grant in order of talent. Drew squirmed, but the penalty was eating turkey testicles. Yuck! Fans of Jake Gyllenhaal were furious when she ranked him last. Drew clearly felt bad, and wore a sign that read “I (heart) Jake Gyllenhaal” sign to the premiere of Santa Clarita Diet season 2.

Prima Donna: Roseanne Barr’s Downward Spiral

Roseanne Barr used to be known as someone who broke barriers on network TV and talked about social issues in real life terms. We’re not sure what happened, but as we all know, her Roseanne Barr Show reboot was canceled in 2018 because of inappropriate Tweets. She was also dropped by her agent, and her behavior denounced by co-stars. Because of her careless words, probably 100 or more people were put out of work. It’s a big price to pay, but even before the infamous Tweet hit the fan, there were many rumors of outrageous behavior on the set, including allegedly demanding that her assistant grill her six hamburgers in the boiling heat, and a tense atmosphere overall.

Prima Donna: Khloé Kardashian Doesn’t Do It All

Celebrities love to project a flawless image to the public, and whatever you think of them, the Kardashian clan are masters of that. It’s not just having a camera-ready face and wardrobe, it’s about making people believe you’ve got a great personality too. Celebrity assistants and their tales are one play we can look to find the real story. A former assistant to Khloe Kardashian spilled the beans for a reporter with Radar Online.

“Khloé doesn't lift a finger at her house! She just barks orders at her assistant and housekeepers to have the cookies and other goodies displayed so that they will look good on camera.”

A Kardashian keeping up appearances for the camera? Say it ain’t so!

Prima Donna: Mariah Carey Can’t Work A Microwave

Mariah Carey is on many lists as the ultimate spoiled diva. A former assistant revealed to NaughtyGossip.com that the singer doesn’t even wash her own hair. She’ll go to a salon or have her assistant do it for her. That’s not all she doesn’t seem capable of doing herself.

“She couldn’t even work a microwave if she tried!”

It's not just the hired help who've had problems with Mimi. In 2017, Will Ferrell went public with the tidbit that Mariah's cameo on the movie The House was scrapped because of her outrageous demands. Mariah herself admitted to her diva moments in an interview with Paper in August 2017. “People can't handle it,” she said.

Class Act: Rooney Mara Believes In Giving Back

Actress Rooney Mara comes from NFL royalty. Her mother’s family founded the Pittsburgh Steelers, and her dad’s family founded the New York Giants. But, even though she grew up in the lap of privilege, Rooney has always had the attitude of giving back. Back in 2008, Rooney founded Faces of Kibera, a foundation that helps orphans living in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. She’s also on the Board of Directors of the Uweza Foundation, which also supports family living in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. Rooney has carved out a reputation as a stellar actress in indie and quirky films, turning down the step up to bigger budget projects in favor of artistic success. It couldn’t happen to a nicer person.

Prima Donna: Julia Roberts Admits To Being Selfish

Julia Roberts became a hugely popular actress because of that big smile of hers, along with an on screen persona that seemed open and friendly. She gained a reputation over the years for causing problems with co-stars and staff on movie sets. Steven Spielberg cast her as Tinkerbell in the 1991 hit movie Hook. In an interview with 60 Minutes, when asked if he would ever work with her again, he gave a flat no. She didn’t speak to brother Eric for years, and her half-sister Nancy Mota actually blamed Julia and her other siblings for her depression in her suicide note. At the funeral, Julia gave what the Daily Mail called a bizarre eulogy where she seemed to admire what Nancy had done, saying, “She took control and ended her pain.” She admitted in interviews in fall 2017 that she had been “selfish” but claimed that husband Danny Moder had changed her — only time will tell.

Prima Donna: Kristen Stewart Really Is A Sullen Goth Queen

Some stars don’t seem to handle fame all that well. In North America, Kristen Stewart is best known for starring in the Twilight series of movies. In Europe, she’s gotten more of a reputation since then for taking chances in a string of well received indie films. We’re guessing that the more low key approach to her career suits her better. During the years of Twilight mania, Kristen was stalked by fans and reporters alike, and often lashed out with profanity laced tirades. She’s called people ugly, and once lashed out at someone who had just bumped into her by accident. Kristen went off on a photographer once, telling them,

“You don’t deserve to breathe the same air I do.”

Now, we can understand wanting to be left alone, but that’s overkill.

Class Act: Amy Poehler’s As Sweet As She Is Funny

Amy Poehler’s one of the hottest comedian/actor/writer/director/producers in TV or movies today, and by all accounts, her success couldn’t happen to a nicer person. She’s said to be kind and considerate to everyone she comes across, even when she’s getting the star treatment. She's known to help out others in show biz. Actor Bobby Moynihan, currently on Me, Myself & I, says Amy first hired him in 2000 to tend bar at New York City's Upright Citizen's Brigade, the comedy improv theatre she co-founded. He took improv classes, and then, eight years later, she got him hired onto SNL a few months before she left. Now, that’s a good friend. Along with being an all around sweetheart, Amy co-founded Smart Girls, an organization that focuses on “helping young people cultivate their authentic selves.”

Class Act: Sandra Bullock Is Friendly And Low Key

A reporter was sent by a national magazine to try and dig up some dirt about Sandra Bullock in Austin, Texas, where she owns a few homes and lives at least some of the time. After trying to chat up anyone and everyone they could find who had come into contact with her, the reporter had to admit defeat. The Oscar-winning star, by all accounts, lives a very private lifestyle, and when she is out in public, she’s quiet, polite, and friendly. Online accounts by fans say that when they’ve approached her during a shoot, that she always takes the time to stop and talk to them and let them take pictures. She’s never developed a diva attitude, despite her uber-successful career.
