We don't think Stephen King will ever run out of books to turn into movie adaptations, and in fact, he's still going pretty strong. With Dr. Sleep newly released, we thought we would make a list of the most popular flicks out there that are based on a novel by this brilliant man.
While most of them might have you on the edge of your seat and shaking in your boots, there are many others that blow us away, and that surprise you that they are from the mind of the King. From The Shining to The Shawshank Redemption, Stephen King has dominated the movie scene. So if you're looking for your next Stephen King binge, here are the 10 highest-grossing film adaptations from his books.
10 Secret Window (2004) - $48 Million
This drama mystery stars the wonderful Johnny Depp. He plays a successful writer who finds himself being stalked at his remote lake house by a man who accuses him of plagiarism. This movie also has John Turturo and Maria Bello, and will definitely have you on the edge of your seat without being a gory horror flick. Plus, we love the idea of Johnny Depp bringing King's character to life.
9 The Dark Tower (2017) - $50.7 Million
This is a fairly new flick, and this action adventure is based on a series by Stephen King. A boy who is plagued by visions of a dark tower teams up with the guardian of the tower in a parallel reality, and the two work together to stop the Man in Black from using the tower to open the gates of Hell.
Starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, this flick is the fantasy action adventure you've been waiting for. While it's not rated by the best by critics, it clearly did fine at the box office.
8 Stand By Me (1986) - $52.3 Million
This is a definitely a film that might surprise viewers when they learn it's a Stephen King novel. There's no scary clowns in this one, but instead this movie centers around a group of young boys. After the death of a friend, a writer reflects back into his childhood, where him and his adventurous friends discovered the body of a missing boy. Starring Wil Wheaton and River Phoenix, this movie is definitely a classic, and we could watch it all day long.
7 Pet Sematary (2019) - $54.7 Million
In case the 1989 one didn't scare you enough, they remade it with all the creepy new modern technology of today. Dr. Louis Creed and his wife relocate from Boston with their two young children, and discover a burial ground near in the woods near their home. Starring Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz, this movie definitely has all the creepy children and animals you could possibly need. If you're a horror fan, and love those of Stephen King, we definitely think you should dive into this horror.
6 Pet Sematary (1989) - $57.5 Million
It's actually pretty impressive that both the original and new adaptation of this film made this list. You know the story - a grieving father discovers an ancient burial ground, and utilizes its power to raise the dead.
This is one of the most classic Stephen King novels and film adaptations ever, and we definitely recommend this thrilling flick. We recommend watching this one and then following it up with the 2019 version. Double the creepy.
5 Misery (1990) - $61.3 Million
Directed by Rob Reiner, this drama thriller tells the story of a famous author who is rescued from a car crash by one of his fans. However, the care of his fan suddenly becomes his nightmare, and turns into captivity and abuse. Starring James Caan, Kathy Bates, and Richard Farnsworth, this is probably one of Stephen King's most famous books, and therefore not surprisingly one of the most famous flicks.
4 1408 (2007) - $72 Million
Starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, this horror mystery follows a man who specializes in debunking paranormal activity. He checks out a hotel room, room 1408, that is rumored to be haunted. However, he finds it harder to debunk the horrors of this room. This film is less heard of, but it clearly did impressive at the box office. We all love a good scary flick about a haunted hotel room, right?
3 The Green Mile (1999) - $136.8 Million
This movie also takes a path away from horror. This classic crime drama follows the lives of guards on Death Row. When a black man accused of child murder and rape joins the row, they quickly discover he has a mysterious gift. Starring Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, and David Morse, this is definitely an interesting and enthralling take on the prison film. Still, it's one of our favorites, and scored a whopping 8.6/10 on IMDb. Clearly that box office number means something.
2 It Chapter Two (2019) - $211.3 Million
If we didn't get enough horrifying clowns from the first movie, here's a sequel to scare your socks off. 27 years after their first encounter with Pennywise, the Losers Club are grown up and moved on, but a mysterious phone call draws them all back. Starring Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Bill Skarsgard (as Pennywise), this movie will definitely have you on the edge of your seat, and it's fresh out of the theaters. Who even is Stephen King without this scary clown and its red balloon, right?
1 It (2017) - $327.5 Million
It's probably not surprising that the first of the series takes the number one spot on this list. It is the summer of 1989, and a group of bullied kids band together to destroy the shape-shifting monster - Pennywise the clown. You know the story, you'd read the book, seen the original flick, and probably went to the theater twice for this one. Still, it's without a doubt the most classic that a Stephen King movie adaptation gets, and we'll definitely never forget this clown (as much as we try to).
