Sonic the Hedgehog raked in $57 million at the US box office during its opening weekend, more than any other video game-based movie ever.

When Sonic the Hedgehog's first trailer was released in 2019, Paramount was not prepared for the backlash it would receive. Sonic looked as if he had been designed by someone going off of a written description of the blue blur who had never actually seen him before. The response from fans was so fierce that the movie's release date was pushed back three months so the hedgehog could be redesigned.

The assumption from many was that a live-action movie featuring a CGI Sonic wouldn't be all that great, especially after that first trailer. However, seems as if the majority of people who have been to see the movie since its release last weekend have been pleasantly surprised.

Sonic has received a great reception and what's more, a lot of people have already been to see what all the fuss is about. It made $57 million in its opening weekend which is the highest-grossing opener for any video game movie ever. A new record was set by Detective Pikachu in 2019 ($54.3 million) around about the same time that cursed Sonic trailer was released. What a difference a little less than a year makes.

The Hollywood Reporter estimates that Sonic's box office gross will be up to $68 million once the numbers for day four are in, and that's not the only way it has left previous record holder Detective Pikachu eating its dust. The Pokémon-based movie raked in $20.5 million in the US on opening night, but its Sega counterpart has it beat by $500,000 as it garnered $21 million in ticket sales on day one.

If you aren't one of the many that has been to see Sonic the Hedgehog, look away now as this last part is riddled with spoilers. Those of you who are still here will know the movie has set itself up perfectly for a sequel. Sonic's faithful sidekick Tails found his way to Earth during the mid-credits scene, and there's even a theory that Knuckles was one of the creatures chasing baby Sonic at the beginning of the film. Let the extended Sonic universe commence!
