Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has become arguably the top name in all of entertainment today. The rise from a WWE wrestler to a Hollywood superstar would see him receive many starring roles earlier in his acting career. Rock struggled for a few years with most of his movies doing poorly with critics and at the box office. However, things turned around quickly with his addition to The Fast and the Furious franchise helping him get more opportunities.
Johnson started to rise in the Hollywood tier of top actors. Many huge roles would land his way and he would gradually become the highest-paid actor in the world. We will look at his journey from the worst of times in his acting career to the best. These are the five highest and five lowest grossing movies starring The Rock so far in his career.
10 Highest grossing: Moana - $643 million
One of The Rock’s greatest movie successes came in the form of voicing an animated character. Disney went all out when casting The Rock to voice the character of Maui in the hit film Moana in 2016. The latest Disney film found a strong audience wanting to see the story play out.
Rock certainly played a role in bringing people out to the box office as one of the biggest stars in the world voicing a character always helps. This added another level of success to Rock’s resume now that he had a pivotal voice role in a Disney hit.
9 Lowest grossing: Snitch - $57 million
One of the few recent movies starring The Rock to flop at the box office was the 2013 movie Snitch. Another action movie would see more depth as Rock played John Matthews as a father attempting to prevent his son from going to jail for having possession of drugs that he was not aware of.
Snitch would see Rock’s character go undercover in a dangerous world to try to clear the name of his son. The lack of box office success showed that the story did not provide enough excitement. Rock had this rare flop during the 2010s.
8 Highest grossing: Fast and Furious 6- $788 million
The role of Luke Hobbs in the Fast and the Furious franchise helped create the positive swing of momentum that made The Rock rise to the top of Hollywood. Fans would enjoy The Rock in the Fast & Furious 6 film that added another chapter to the franchise.
This movie made almost $800 million internationally with the story continuing to follow the various characters. Rock made his second appearance in this one to help prove that he was a major reason new fans gave the franchise a chance and continued coming back to the movie theater each time.
7 Lowest grossing: Doom - $55 million
Doom was a huge project that was based on the popular video game franchise. Dwayne Johnson was cast in the lead role of Gunnery Sergeant Asher "Sarge" Mahonin in the 2005 movie. Critics destroyed the movie with a 19% Rotten Tomatoes score and fans did not show up at the box office.
The Rock even poked fun at Doom during an appearance at the WWE Hall of Fame by joking that no one saw it during an interaction with John Cena. This film set back The Rock's acting career as it was a huge negative mark on his name.
6 Highest grossing: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - $961 million
Any concerns that The Rock’s star power only worked in The Fast and the Furious franchise disappeared when he was cast as the lead star for the Jumanji remake. The classic movie was done with the twist of teenagers becoming adult characters after being teleported into a game for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
It was a smash hit and a top holiday season movie towards the end of 2017. Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan displayed great chemistry, with the film netting nearly $1 billion internationally. A sequel will see Rock reprise his role as Dr. Smolder Bravestone in the franchise.
5 Lowest grossing: Gridiron Gang - $41 million
The Rock decided to take a role that went back to his early adult years on the football field. A role as Sean Porter in Gridiron Gang would see Rock portray an employee at a Detention Center creating a football team to help escape their problems by playing the game.
The movie had some touching moments, but fans did not find it impressive enough to come out to the box office. Gridiron Gang only made $41 million internationally and barely earned a profit off the $30 budget. Many producers doubted The Rock's star power after this 2006 flop.
4 Highest grossing: The Fate of the Furious - $1.2 billion
The most recent movie from the Fast and the Furious franchise would bring The Rock back again as Like Hobbs. This film revolved around Vin Diesel’s character turning against the group due to a blackmail threat that puts everyone in danger.
The Fate of the Furious raked in over $1 billion with huge success at the box office. It helped pave the way for an upcoming spin-off featuring Rock and Jason Statham’s characters.
3 Lowest grossing: Faster - $35 million
The Rock would regret taking the lead role in the 2010 movie Faster. He played the principal character of James Cullen, a small-time criminal tasked with trying to avenge the death of his brother. Many fans of The Rock don’t even know this movie exists.
Faster made just $35 million internationally, barely managing to recoup the original $24 million investment. This was the last role before The Rock stepped up in the world thanks to The Fast and the Furious franchise. Faster represents the end of Rock’s disappointing chapter to his acting career.
2 Highest grossing: Furious 7 - $1.5 billion
The most successful movie of The Rock’s acting career - up to this point - is the film most consider the peak of The Fast and Furious franchise. Rock reprised the role of Luke Hobbs in Furious 7, the final entry featuring Paul Walker before he passed away in a car accident.
Fans of the franchise experienced a tide of emotions saying farewell to Walker. The overall success of Furious 7 would see a massive $1.5 billion box office gross internationally as one of the highest grossing movies of all time.
1 Lowest grossing: Southland Tales - $374,743
Southland Tales is clearly the least successful movie of The Rock’s career. The 2007 film made less than half a million bucks in a limited release after $17 million was put into the production. Johnson played the lead character of Boxer Santaros in a story about a dystopian Los Angeles.
The critics disliked it, most fans didn’t have access to see it at their local theater, and no one with access cared enough to see it. Southland Tales’ massive flop made it the lowest grossing movie of The Rock’s career.
