One of the animators behind Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has confirmed that work has officially begun on the sequel.

Although the superhero movie boom has only reached unfathomable heights over the course of the last decade or so, studios have been toying with different formulas for years. On the DC side of things, no hero has been reimagined more than Batman. As for Marvel, Spider-Man is their guy. The web-slinger has hit the big screen in a variety of different forms in the last 20 years alone.

From Tobey Maguire to Andrew Garfield, to Tom Holland who currently occupies the role as a part of the MCU. It's like a modern-day version of James Bond. However, Bond never had a hit animated version of his antics hit the big screen. Spider-Man did that back in 2018 via the hugely popular Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The movie played on the Marvel comic books' multiverse, introducing different Spider-People from different universes. Miles Morales was joined by Peter Parker, Gwen Stacey, and even a Spider-Pig. Some fans have labeled it the best cinematic take on Spider-Man to date, and can now enjoy the fact that there will be a sequel coming in a little more than two years.

Although the sequel had already been confirmed, there was no word from Sony or the team behind the movie as to when work would begin. Well, we now know that work on Into The Spider-Verse 2 has already begun. Nick Kondo, an animator who worked on the first movie, revealed on Twitter this week that he has started work on the project. Kondo tweeted "first day on the job!" along with the short clip of the Spider-Verse logo with "2022" flashing across it.

As for when exactly Into The Spider-Verse 2 will hit movie theaters, and whether it will be affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, it's currently scheduled for October 2022. October 7, 2022, to be exact. As for what fans can expect from its storyline, that is being kept close to the chest. It's assumed that all of the Spider-People from the first movie will reunite somehow, and might be joined by Spider-Man 2099 who appeared during the first movie's credits.
