Jon Watts is very likely to return for the third Spider-Man movie, which is set to release in 2021.
The director was reported to be at the center of a tug of war between Marvel and Sony after the two franchises decided to go their separate ways last month. But, with fate doing all of us a solid and reuniting the two brands, the 38-year-old appears poised to influence the next Spidey film.
Watts had signed a two-movie deal with Sony and was not tied down for a third before the companies split, so there was concern over him possibly walking away altogether. Fortunately for everyone, Marvel and Sony have kissed, made up, gotten into bed and are ready to work together again.
Deadline reports that Watts is currently in talks for a fresh deal although he was moved to the back burner due to the companies prioritizing an agreement over co-financing for the upcoming film.
"The hope we hear from sources is that Watts’ deal will be wrapped soon," the outlet published on Friday. "Essentially, Sony and Disney/Marvel sought to hammer out their co-financing agreement on the third Spidey pic first, before turning their attention to re-upping Watts.
"At the time the Sony-Disney battle went down last month, Watts didn’t have a deal for the next Spider-Man picture and he wasn’t a lock to return."
Watts has received critical acclaim for his work on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. The films grossed $880 million and $1.3 million, respectively, on a worldwide scale.
Kevin Feige made the decision to go with Watts after the latter's Cop Car movie starring Kevin Bacon in 2015. He has left an indelible mark on both Marvel and Sony and Marvel wanted him working exclusively for the MCU following the divorce with Sony.
Fan-favorite Tom Holland will also be reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man for the next film. The star would have remained on as Spidey even without Marvel's involvement, but he would have been absent in all of Marvel's projects going forward.
As it turns out, the estrangement did not last very long and all is right with the universe again.
