One has to wonder if John Cena has his eyes on becoming as famous as Dwayne Johnson. Already arguably as big in the world of professional wrestling, Cena continues landing movie roles, this time for the new Suicide Squad film set for release in 2021.
The new Suicide Squad film — which is being described as not exactly a sequel and not exactly not a sequel — comes from the DC Comics Universe and will see a number of familiar faces return, with a huge chunk of new characters joining them.
Director James Gunn took to Twitter on Friday and listed more than 20 actors confirmed for the film, among them John Cena. Cena is joined by the likes of Idris Elba (MCU and Hobbs and Shaw), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), plus Jai Courtney, and Margot Robbie who played Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn in the first film.
Unfortunately, there's no mention of the Joker (either by Joaquin Phoenix or Jared Leto) or Will Smith back as Deadshot. There are rumors that Smith still may join the cast at some point.
What Role Will Cena Play
Outside of the actors reprising their roles, Gunn did not confirm any of the parts in his tweet, nor how involved they'd be in the movie. Some may live, some may die. As for Cena? He is expected to play the role of DC Comics character Peacemaker.
Meanwhile, Cena fans will have mixed reactions to the news. Some are happy that Cena continues to find massive success in Hollywood. Others know announcements like these are only to put bigger restrictions on when and how often he can appear for WWE.
The film is set for release on August 6, 2021. There's no indication as to how much or how little Cena might show his face in WWE until that time.
