Joaquin Phoenix & Todd Phillips Discussed a "Joker" Sequel

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix are receiving plenty of favorable reviews for Joker, which has now netted over $850 million at the box office.

This was the first live theatrical standalone film for the Clown Prince of Crime, and Joker will certainly go down as one of the top blockbuster movies of 2019. Given the early success of the film, it's not too early to wonder about the possibility of a sequel.

But as it turns out, Phillips actually talked to Phoenix about doing another Joker film while they were on production. However, Phillips emphasized that they haven't been genuine about it.

"Joaquin and I would constantly talk about a sequel on set," Phillips said in an interview with Empire. "We’ve never seriously discussed it and still haven’t, because we really always envisioned it as its own standalone thing."

Joker wasn't exactly what you might deem "conclusive." There was no strong and firm ending that would essentially close out the possibility of a sequel - unlike past DC character-based films like The Dark Knight Rises. So the plot and ending to the film left the possibility for Phillips and Phoenix to do another sequel.

Phoenix didn't rule out the possibility of portraying Joker again during an interview with Peter Travers, either. So Joker fans should be optimistic about the possibility of a sequel down the road.

Only time will tell if we get to see a followup to Joker, but in the movie industry, money makes the world go round. We're not in an era anymore where movie directors worry about going out on high notes. If a film is going to make a lot of money, production companies will do it, plain and simple.

But seeing how well Joker has performed at the box office, Phoenix and Phillips have plenty of reason to think about doing a sequel down the road. We'll just have to wait and see.
