Chris Evans has cleared up any confusion there was surrounding his voicing of Buzz Lightyear and added a new, very deep layer to the character in the process.
Disney dropped an absolute boatload of announcements earlier this week. Release dates for its MCU TV shows alongside a heap more information regarding its Marvel movies. Plus, confirmation that Chadwick Boseman will not be replaced as Black Panther. That came with a whole load of Star Wars news, and something pretty special regarding the future of the Toy Story franchise.
While there was no word on a Toy Story 5, Disney did drop a teaser trailer for a movie called Lightyear. It also included a tentative release date, the first image of the movie's star, and the reveal that Chris Evans, aka Captain America, will voice the Space Ranger. That has got Toy Story fans up in arms, and for good reason.
Tim Allen has been the voice of Buzz Lightyear for all four Toy Story movies, so why has he been dropped in favor of Evans for the iconic character's origin story? Well, Evans has stepped in to clear things up. The Avengers star replied to Pixar's Lightyear announcement tweet revealing that he will be voicing Buzz Lightyear the man, not the toy.
That's right, the Buzz Lightyear toy was based on a real-life astronaut. All within the Toy Story universe, of course. That's a little bit of Pixar lore Disney has never revealed before now. Well, we say that, considering how good Pixar is at hiding Easter eggs in its movies, we'd hazard to guess there have been clues pointing to Buzz's true origin ever since the first Toy Story was released in 1995.
It was revealed in Toy Story 2 that Woody was a toy based on a character from a TV show. A lot of fans might have assumed the same of Buzz Lightyear. It explains why Buzz believed himself to be a real astronaut in the first movie, hurting himself when he attempted to fly. Turns out the man on which his design was based really could fly, and went to space. Disney's Lightyear will hit theaters on June 17, 2022.
