Ben Affleck's tenure as Batman ended much quicker than expected.

He first donned the cape and the cowl in Zack Snyder's 2016 blockbuster, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, starring alongside Henry Cavill. The film received negative reviews, but Affleck gave it one more go as the Caped Crusader for Justice League, which was released in 2017.

In early 2019, Affleck officially stepped down from the Batman role. Twilight star Robert Pattinson was cast in his place. Matt Reeves was then replaced as the director for Snyder,  who left the Justice League project following the untimely passing of his daughter.

During a recent interview with the New York Times, Affleck was told that he shouldn't be involved in The Batman due to worries over his battles with alcohol. Affleck admitted that he was drinking more than usual as he and Jennifer Garner prepared for a divorce.

And during a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Affleck admitted that there wasn't much joy in making blockbusters, even though they're "cool." He also explained that it was hard to keep himself motivated, and that the Batman role should go to somebody who wanted it more.

During a recent interview with GQ (h/t People), Affleck reiterated these points, further explaining that he lost his passion to continue as Batman.

"Justice League was, unfortunately, touched by some personal tragedy – death in (director) Zack’s (Snyder) family – and like I say, sometimes things sort of work and gel and sometimes they just, you know, you seem to be having one problem after another."

That said, Affleck still enjoyed his short and sweet tenure as the DC Comics hero, saying that he "had a good time." But after just two Batman films, Affleck simply didn't have the drive to keep going.

"I sort of had my fill of that...found that at some point, I had lost my enthusiasm and passion for it," Affleck said. "This should really be made by someone for whom it’s their wildest dream come true. For me it had become something different and it was clear to me it was time to move on."

Reeves quickly went to work in building up a star-studded cast for The Batman, which will hit theaters in June 2021. Aside from Pattinson, The Batman will also star Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Paul Dano (Riddler), Colin Farrell (Penguin), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), John Turturro (Carmine Falcone) and Peter Sarsgaard (DA Gil Colson).
