Andy Serkis & Colin Farrell In Discussions For "The Batman"

Matt Reeves has already assembled a star-studded cast for The Batman, but even more major names are being linked to the upcoming blockbuster film.

According to a report from Justin Kroll of Variety, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit star Andy Serkis is in discussions to be cast as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman. The War Zone and Total Recall star Colin Farrell, meanwhile, is apparently "being eyed to" portray the Penguin.

Warner Bros. didn't have any comment, per Kroll.

Robert Pattinson - who will portray Batman/Bruce Wayne - was the first person cast. Zoe Kravitz was recently confirmed to play Catwoman/Selina Kyle, and Paul Dano was announced as Riddler/Edward Nygma. And last week, after plenty of rumors, Jeffrey Wright was officially confirmed to perform the role of Commissioner Gordon.

Matthew McConaughey, meanwhile, has been rumored for the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face, though this has yet to be announced.

Alfred Pennyworth was portrayed by the late Michael Gough in the first four live theatrical Batman films: Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992) Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997).

For the Christopher Nolan trilogy, Michael Cain portrayed the role Alfred, displaying excellent on-screen chemistry with Christian Bale. Both Gough and Cain received high praise for their performances of Alfred.

Jeremy Irons portrayed Batman's loyal butler and friend in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). Of course, the Batman franchise is undergoing major changes; Reeves has replaced Zack Snyder as the director, and Pattinson replaced Ben Affleck. Now, we'll see if Serkis winds up being the man who takes over for Irons.

As for Penguin, Danny DeVito remains the only person to have portrayed the character in a theatrical fim. That was for Batman Returns, which starred Micheal Keaton as the Caped Crusader and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. We'll hopefully find out in short time if Farrell ends up becoming the second. At any rate, this is looking to be one of the greatest superhero movie casts in cinema history.
