The 9 Most Bizarre Celebrity Rivalries Of 2014

Celebrities may have a lot in common - money, cars, expensive homes and paparazzi shadowing their every move - but this doesn't necessarily mean that they all get along. In fact, celebrity spats and rivalries seem more common than celebrity friendships these days. Some celebrity tustles throughout the years have been ongoing and highly publicised.

Of course, one of the most memorable celebrity fights in recent years kicked off with Taylor Swift's showdown with Kanye West at the VMAs in 2009. When Kanye painfully interrupted the singer's acceptance speech for the Best Video award, fans got behind camp Swift or camp Kanye, and the incident became modern celebrity legend. It’s been five years since the VMAs incident, and a lot has happened since then. New celebrity rivalries have formed out of a myriad of complexities, and some are particularly bitter. 2014 has, so far, been an almost unprecedented year for highly publicised bad feeling between certain well-loved celebs, with social media networks like Twitter all too readily available to fuel the fire of these spats: The following are nine of the most unpredictable, most heated and most cringe-worthy celeb rivalries of the year.

9 Sarah Michelle Gellar VS Kim Kardashian

8 Lily Allen VS Katie Hopkins

Katie Hopkins, the British television personality and columnist, is one of the most controversial figures in British media at the moment. Her brash, uncompromising stances on sensitive issues, such as obesity and class divisions, have earned her a bad reputation in recent years. Singer Lily Allen was enraged earlier this year when Hopkins made a cruel comment about Lily’s weight gain after her pregnancy, stating that she was “looking pretty hideous.” Allen had recently suffered a miscarriage, and was quick to put Hopkins in her place. “Yes, after tragically losing my child so late into pregnancy I may have gained a few pounds… I wasn’t exercising because I didn’t want to take any risks… the survival of my children felt more important than being thin”.

7 Die Antwoord VS Lady Gaga & Pitbull

The South African rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, made up of Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er, aren’t exactly known for being shrinking violets. Their innovative approach to rap, their explicit lyrics and erratic personalities have quickly made them famous. They aren’t afraid to speak their minds, which is pretty obvious in their frequent spats with other celebrities. When Lady Gaga asked them to support her on her tour in 2012, the rappers snubbed her and made fun of her in their video for ‘Fatty Boom Boom’, in which a Gaga lookalike has a cockroach pulled from her private parts by a doctor.  This year, the pair made headlines again when their song ‘Pitbull’ appeared to be in reference to the artist of the same name. The music video features a man of Pitbull’s likeness being savagely attacked.

6 Justin Bieber VS Orlando Bloom

5 Gwyneth Paltrow VS Martha Stewart

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has recently made a name for herself in the somewhat perplexing 'lifestyle guru' niche. Her lifestyle blog Goop and cookbook have made her a healthy lifestyle icon in the eyes of many. However, Paltrow has recently come to blows with the Godmother of lifestyle guru-ing, Martha Stewart. Martha recently spoke bitterly about Gwyneth’s efforts: “She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.” Ouch! Gwyneth hasn’t hit back at Martha publicly which we sort of understand, given Stewart’s influence.

4 Katy Perry VS Taylor Swift

Katy Perry and Taylor Swift are very similar. Both two fantastic voices, they both achieved huge success at a very young age and have made themselves household names. They've also both been linked to John Mayer, along with countless other gorgeous A-list women...

And it appears that the two have never gotten along. Swift recently bitched out an unnamed fellow female pop star to Rolling Stone magazine, accusing her of being two-faced and trying to sabotage her tour. As soon as the article was released, Katy tweeted “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…”  and sleuths put it all together, working out that Katy Perry snatched away some of Swift's backing dancers a couple of years back. The pair have had very erratic, forced Twitter interactions since 2009, which always seem to be tongue-in-cheek beneath the surface. To add fuel to an already raging fire, the two will be going head to head at the MTV European Music Awards for Best Female Artist...

3 Miley Cyrus VS Sinéad O’ Connor

Miley Cyrus has hit the headlines almost every week in the past year. Her new image, erratic behaviour and change of musical direction shocked the industry and her fans. However, Miley’s behaviour brought her to loggerheads with Irish pop legend Sinéad O'Connor. When Miley declared that Sinéad’s ‘Nothing Compares To You’ video had been the inspiration for her controversial video for ‘Wrecking Ball’, Sinéad publicly retorted via an open letter, expressing concern for Miley’s attitude.

Sinéad claimed that Miley was allowing herself to be used by the music industry, and  delivered her a heavy warning: “The music business doesn't give a sh** about you, or any of us. They will prost***te you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think it's what YOU wanted../ and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prost****ed, “they” will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.” After this, Cyrus made a controversial move by comparing Sinéad (who has suffered from mental health issues in the past), to the troubled star Amanda Bynes.

2 Frances Bean Cobain VS Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey found herself under fire earlier this year after her spat with Frances Bean Cobain, the only daughter of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. In an interview with The Guardian, Lana proclaimed that she “wished [she] was dead already”, and claimed that early death was somewhat glamorous.

Frances Bean was quick to vent her feelings about this, which is a very personal subject for her given the tragic loss of her father when she was only a baby. “The death of young musicians isn't something to romanticize. I'll never know my father because he died young… people like you think it's 'cool.' Well, it's fucking not. Embrace life, because you only get one life. The people you mentioned wasted that life. Don't be one of those people. You're too talented to waste it away.”

1 Lorde VS Almost Everyone

Lorde may be one of the youngest players on the international music scene, but she certainly has one of the loudest voices, both musically and when it comes to publicising her opinions about other celebrities. Soon after her very first hit, Lorde was making enemies in the music industry by making harsh comments about other artists, all seemingly unprovoked. Here's a small collection of her backhanded comments:

On Justin Bieber: “I feel like the influences that are there in the industry for people my age, like Justin Bieber or whatever, are just maybe not a very real depiction of what it’s like to be a young person.”

On Selena Gomez: “I’m a feminist, and the theme of her song [Come And Get It] is, ‘When you’re ready come and get it from me.’ I’m sick of women being portrayed this way.”

On One Direction: "One Direction are pretty overrated and their music isn't really good. I find it odd they're famous.”

On Lana Del Rey: "I listened to that Lana Del Rey record and the whole time I was just thinking it's so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know: 'I'm nothing without you.' This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, 'don't leave me' stuff. That's not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear.”

Lorde also branded Nicki Minaj’s music as “irrelevant” and David Guetta as “gross”. There are undoubtedly many who will share some of her opinions, but her very public approach to expressing them has earned Lorde a bit of a reputation on the A-List.
