Did you hear about the supermodel who has 4 assault convictions? Or the supermodel arrested for assaulting her plastic surgeon? What about the male supermodel who was arrested for public drunkenness, who was also charged with offering arresting officers certain "services" in exchange for his release? Then there's the swimwear model accused of running an international drugs ring and another supermodel arrested for money laundering. And there's more. More assault, DUI, tax evasion and possession of marijuana. Sometimes the stories have fairly happy endings, and sometimes they end in tragedy.
Supermodels are rich, famous and spoiled. They can make millions, jetting all over the world for photoshoots or to strut their stuff on the catwalk. Victoria's Secret has their "Angels". Sports Illustrated features them in their Swimsuit Issues. The term has been around a while, but became a real buzzword in the 1980s. Think Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson and Heidi Klum. The female supermodel came first, closely followed by her male counterpart. But sometimes all the fame, money and adulation means trouble. On occasion, the supermodels are the victims. 1998's VH1/Vogue Model of the Year Carolyn Murphy, had to endure the humiliation of her ex husband's arrest for attempting to sell a s*x tape made on their honeymoon. That had to hurt.
There are some supermodels that have come dangerously close to arrest. In 2015, Kate Moss was escorted off a plane for "disruptive" behavior. And US Weekly reported that she later claimed the authorities had tried to arrest her. Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks, was sued for assault by a woman who claimed Ebanks had punched her in the nose. Reportedly, the woman filed a complaint with the police, but no arrest was made. The biggest headlines come when the supermodel is well and truly arrested. Here are 11 supermodels who were arrested.
11 Naomi Campbell - Assault
Reportedly, Campbell has been convicted of assault on four occasions. There have actually been 11 complaints filed by employees and associates between 1998 and 2009. In February of 2000, she pleaded guilty to assaulting an assistant with a cell phone. In 2009 she pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers at London's Heathrow. Something about lost luggage. She was also banned from British Airways for life. Then, in 2015 she got 6 months probation for a 2009 assault on a paparazzo photographer. She whacked him with her handbag. Is she sorry? Probably not. She has been pictured wearing a t-shirt that reads: "Naomi hit me . . . and I loved it".
10 Stephanie Seymour - DUI
In the 1980s and 1990s, she appeared in a number of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues and was a Victoria's Secret model. But in January of 2016, she was making headlines and TV news for all the wrong reasons. She was arrested by the Connecticut State Police for driving under the influence. A police spokesman told People that she reversed into another car at the end of an Interstate off ramp. At her April hearing, the judge agreed to drop the charge if she attended AA meetings twice a week. The 47 year old reportedly apologized to the court for her behavior.
9 Bar Refaeli - Tax Evasion
According to Variety, the Israeli supermodel and her mom were arrested in Israel for suspected tax evasion in December of 2015. The 31 year old supermodel, who was voted #1 on Maxim magazine's Hot 100 list in 2013, is reportedly one of the highest paid models in the world and has a net worth of some $20 million. The Victoria's Secret model and former girlfriend of Leo DiCaprio, married Adi Ezra in March of 2015. Reportedly the couple are currently expecting their first child.
8 Nick Snider - Public Drunkenness, Disorderly Conduct and Offering "Services" To Arresting Police Officers
The guy is noted for his supermodel pout. It was even on display in the Arkansas mugshot after his 2010 arrest for public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and certain offer of services to police officers in order to make the charges go away. The then 21 year old model was turned down flat and, to add insult to injury, had another charge added to his sheet. Would that be attempted bribery? In 2008, the blonde face of Prada was named the world's fifth most successful male model by Forbes. After his arrest, his New York model agency VNY, offered to help him get help.
7 Jerry Hall - Possession of Marijuana
She recently married billionaire publisher Rupert Murdoch, but back in the day, the Texan supermodel and Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, were a longstanding item and had 4 children together. We all know about the s*x, drugs and rock n' roll Rolling Stones. And in 1987, Jerry, then all of 30, was arrested in Barbados and charged with possession of marijuana. With 4 defense attorneys in tow, she was cleared of the charges (Mick was there to celebrate). Back in 2014, she bragged that she smoked, drank and sunbathed still. Presumably, that's tobacco we're talking about.
6 Nadja Auermann - Tax Evasion
In 2011, The Daily Mail reported that the German supermodel and actress and her ex husband, appeared in a German court charged with tax evasion. While she claimed to be resident in Monaco, tax authorities contended that she had spent more time in Germany and therefore, owed the tax to the tune of Euro 270,000 (around $300,000). Back in the 1990s, she was in The Guinness Book of Records as the model with the longest legs (some 44 inches). And she walked the catwalk and appeared in ads for the likes of Armani, Dior, Prada and Chanel.
5 Jessica White - Misdemeanor Assault
She was a Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model who had been linked to Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens, and also had an on again, off again thing with actor Sean Penn. The story was that in May of 2011, the relationship with Penn had once again ended and Jessica was out celebrating with friends. Then, close to dawn, she got into a dispute with another woman. She was arrested outside of New York's Avenue Lounge and charged with misdemeanor assault. People reported that she was held for some 12 hour and was later released.
4 Ayyan - Money Laundering
In 2015, The Daily Mail reported that the Pakistani supermodel had been charged with money laundering after she was arrested at the Islamabad airport with $500,000 in her carry-on luggage. It's illegal in Pakistan to carry out more than $10,000. By the time of the report in April of 2015, she had been denied bail and had been in jail for several weeks. Her story? Some reports said that she told a court that the money had come from a Pakistani businessman. Her lawyers cleaned that one up and said the money came from a legitimate property sale. They said she hadn't checked in yet and (of course) had planned to hand the money over to her brother before leaving. Her legal team was outraged she was living with "ordinary" criminals. As opposed to?
3 Simone Farrow - Drug Ring, Skipping Out on Bail
She was an international swimsuit model who was accused of running an international drug ring out of her Hollywood apartment. The one time face of Ed Hardy brand bathing suits had reportedly used nearly 20 different aliases to ship methamphetamine (hidden in bath salts) to places all over the world. A friend posted a $150,000 bond to spring her. But then she skipped bail and was arrested in Australia. Why did she run? Her story was that someone was trying to murder her and she had no choice but to flee. Right. The former FHM Sexiest Woman in the World claimed to have had relationships with underworld characters who would feel "threatened" by her situation.
2 Karen Mulder - Assaulting Her Plastic Surgeon
Jezebel.com reported that the 1990's supermodel was arrested in Paris for making death threats on her plastic surgeon. It would almost be funny, if it weren't so tragic. The 5'10" Dutch model shot to fame after a friend sent her pictures to an Elite Model Look Competition. She left high school and went to work for the likes of Armani and Versace. She was also featured in a Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition. Hasbro made a Karen Mulder doll and she dated Prince Albert II of Monaco. Things turned tragic with reports of depression and a 2002 suicide attempt. Then in 2009, she was arrested in Paris for repeated phone threats on her female plastic surgeon. Reportedly, the 40-something model wanted a previous procedure reversed.
1 Gia Carangi - DUI, Police Car Chase
Active during the late 1970s, Carangi worked for Dior and Versace and featured in multiple editions of Vogue and Cosmopolitan. She battled drug addiction and sometimes had brief success. But, she was increasingly in a downward spiral. She was arrested in 1981 after, under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, she plowed a car into a fence and then drove off chased by police. She died five years later as a result of an AIDS related complex. Many consider her the world's first supermodel. Angelina Jolie starred as Carangi in a biopic, Gia.
