15 Things You Didn't Know About Peter Dinklage

Peter Dinklage is cool. He is not just kind of cool, and it is definitely not that he is cool for a "little person." He is just straight up, all the way, cool.  There have been many little persons throughout the years that have been actors, but Dinklage is by far the coolest of them all. He just is who he is, and he totally owns it.

Many people, and I count myself among them, think Dinklage is the best, and, of course, the coolest actor on Game of Thrones and that is truly saying something as so many of the actors are so top notch. I first saw Dinklage in the 1995 movie Living in Oblivion, which was not just the first time I saw him, but was his first role in a movie. He plays a "dwarf" who is appearing as an actor in a dream sequence. It bothers him that he has such a demeaning role and says this to the director "Have you ever had a dream with a dwarf in it? Do you know anyone who's had a dream with a dwarf in it? No! I don't even have dreams with dwarves in them. The only place I've seen dwarves in dreams is in stupid movies like this! 'Oh make it weird, put a dwarf in it!'. Everyone will go 'Woah, this must be a dream, there's a dwarf in it!'"

And that is why he is so cool. Here are 15 more cool things you didn't know about Peter Dinklage.

15 He Doesn't Care What You Call Him

Dinklage was born with a condition that is called achondroplasia, which is something that affects the growth of his limbs. Because of this he is 4'5" tall. While this is obviously something that has caused him stress in life, he is not Superman after all,  he does not get all that worked up about the words that people use to describe him.  He said in a 2004  interview with The Guardian "I hate all that 'little person' s**t. Call me a midget, but just be real. I am all for correct terms, but please don't tiptoe around feelings. Don't be too careful, because that shuts you off from people." This quote, and this attitude, is one of the many reasons Dinklage is so cool. He is not going to let your view of him define who he is, and all of us could learn a little bit from that attitude.

14 He Is An Advocate For Little People

When Dinklage won an Emmy for his role in Game of Thrones, instead of going on and on about himself,  he decided to use that stage to give a shout out to a little person named  Martin Henderson who was in a bit of a bad way. This was because Henderson was injured by a drunken man who decided it would be funny to engage in some "dwarf tossing" with Henderson. After Dinklage brought him up on national TV, Henderson said "It is nice to know my message is getting out to people that it is not acceptable to throw dwarves around." It is actually truly amazing that things like this even happen. This is another example of Dinklage being cool and a bit above and beyond- he always tries to be a good example, not just for little people, but for everyone, and for the most part he does just that.

13 He Is Married

via shutterstock.com

While Tyrion Lannister is a bit of a ladies man on Game of Thrones,  and as an actor Dinklage is thought of as a bit of a sex symbol even as a little person, in real life he seems to be a bit of a doting husband. He has been married for over ten years, after tying the knot in 2005. His wife is named Erica Schmidt, and they have a child. Dinklage is not the typical star in many ways, and this relationship is no exception. Although they have been photographed together at different events, they keep things on the down low for the most part. They even have a daughter who was born in 2011, but the press and public do not even know what the girl's name is. There was a rumor that her name was "Zelig" but that was denied by Dinklage. The family lives in Manhattan, where they obviously spend a lot of time hiding out.

12 He Got The Role As Tyrion Without Having To Audition

via tribecashortlist.com

As most of you know Peter Dinklage has been a successful actor for quite a while now. His first role was in Lost in Oblivion, and of course he had that role in Elf,  and was the star of The Station Agent, which really established him as not only an excellent actor, but one who could be the lead actor in a movie.

So when it came time for Game of Thrones, producers already knew that they wanted Dinklage to play the role. He was their first choice, and their only choice. Dinklage was not sure he wanted the part as he figured the dwarf would be magical or have some other stereotypical dwarf trait, which is kind of funny as Tyrion is one of the coolest characters on the show. He said "Dwarves in these genres always have this look. My guard was up. Not even my guard - my metal fence, my barbed wire was up. Even Lord of the Rings had dwarf-tossing jokes in it. It's like, Really?"

11 He Never Combs His Hair

via shutterstock.com

You know how cool Dinklage always looks, not just on the show, but in real life as well? It is like he always just has this totally mellow, but rakish charm going on all the time, and a big part of it is that wild head of hair he has. It always looks so cool. So what do you think his secret is? How do you think he gets his hair to look so good all the time? Well, it turns out that his secret is he never combs or brushes his hair, and does not even own a brush or a comb. He once said about how his hair looked so good during a Reddit Ask Me Anything: "It's called not owning a brush. Or a comb. That's my secret. Just don't buy a comb." Guys, don't try this at home. It won't work.

10 He Wants Other Little People Actors To Stand Up For Themselves

via shutterstock.com

Dinklage is tired, and understandably so, of how little people are so often made fun of in movies, in television, and real life. When you think about it he is right; the jokes that can still be made about people with his issue in movies would never fly with other types of minorities.  He once said in an interview with the New York Times "this is screwed up. Dwarves are still the butt of jokes. It’s one of the last bastions of acceptable prejudice. Not just by people who’ve had too much to drink in England and want to throw a person. But by media, everything." In the same interview with the New York Times he also talked about how other actors who are little people are partly responsible for the issue themselves.  He said "You can say no. You can not be the object of ridicule.”

9 He Used To Be Really Poor

via youtube.com

A lot of us had some times in our lives when we were really poor and had to live in really bad conditions to get by. When I was in my early 20s, sometimes I would go an entire week eating nothing but toast. Dinklage was no exception to this rule. He and some friends moved into an apartment under the Williamsburg bridge. It was not the best apartment ever according to Dinklage; in fact the whole thing was a truly horrible slum. Trains were constantly going overhead and rattling the entire apartment, and rats were living inside of the stove. At one point Dinklage and his roomies complained to the landlord about the situation and they had a knife pulled on them.  Ahhh well, Dinklage is rich now, and I am sure all of that previous experience of being really poor did nothing but help him appreciate what he has now.

8 He Is Not Poor Anymore

Game of Thrones stars, of which Dinklage is obviously one, are rumored to be making around $300,000 an episode. This amount of change should keep Dinklage out of apartments where he had rats in his stove, for quite a while. The cast also united to negotiate a deal that paid them a million an episode for the final season. I know what you are thinking and this deal goes on whether they die or not.  This obviously is not all the cast members that are getting this much, just the big dogs such as Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldou, although I am sure all of the supporting cast does all right as well. If there is one thing for sure it is that Game of Thrones has turned into quite the money mill for every person that is involved, and I am sure that does not hurt Dinklage's feelings at all.

7 His Parents Treated Him Normally

via shutterstock.com

There are two different kind of parents. There is the kind that would have a little person for a child and would freak right out- they would try to protect him all the time, and make sure he was okay. They would worry about him and help him with all that they could. Then there is the other type of parent which is the kind that Dinklage has. They just treated him like anyone else. They did not act like his height was a big deal. In fact, if there was something that was too high for him, they just told him to climb up on something and that he should get it himself. While this may seem kind of cruel to some, it obviously worked as Dinklage has a lot of confidence and does not look at himself like a victim in any way. Good job, Mmom and dad Dinklage.

6 He Knew The Boss When He Was Little

via shutterstock.com

The Boss is Bruce Springsteen, of course, who is one of the most famous musicians of all time. Okay, so maybe saying he knew him was a little too much. Well, actually he did know him, but the thing is he does not remember him of course because he was only 2 years old. While growing up, Dinklage lived next to Springsteen's manager, and The Boss was over there all the time hanging out and rocking out. Dinklage's mom was not a huge fan and said the music was too loud. Dinklage had a bit of the music bug himself and used to play in a punk and funk band called Whizzy that played at CBGB, which is one of the most famous clubs in New York.  Obviously at some point Dinklage decided to give up the music and stick to acting, which seems to have been the right choice, for his wallet anyway.

5 He Was The "Wake Up Guy" On Seinfeld

via thefillerbuster.com

If there is one thing that a lot of women dig about Peter Dinklage, it is his voice. I mean come on, that guy is fun to listen to. Even as a guy I think that his voice is pretty cool to listen to- I can't imagine how you ladies feel. Well, it turns out that he has been using his voice to seduce the ladies for a while now. He got a role on Seinfeld as James the wake up call guy who calls up Elaine and flirts with her. As an aside, I would like to do that too; who else besides me has always thought Julia Louis Dreyfus was kind of hot? Hopefully all of you, because she totally is. Anyway, Elaine kind of loses it over James and his sexy voice, which puts her in good company with all the other ladies out there that like to hear Dinklage talk.

4 He Is The Only American On Game Of Thrones

via hbo.com

Yes, you heard correctly. Of course, if you did not know anything about Dinklage, you never would have suspected that he was American. The guy has an accent that just does not quit, but it is not just the accent, he also perfectly nails the upper crust aspect of it. But with all that said it is true; all of the other actors on the show are European, and most of them are Irish, English, or Scottish.  There have been a few other American actors on the show, but none of them with huge parts. One of them was Pedro Pascal who played Oberyn Martell who was also known as The Red Viper. Another was Jason Momoa, who starred as Khal Drogo, but other than those two almost every single actor on the show has not been American. Peter obviously has represented his country well on the show.

3 He Is A Gun Control Advocate

via latimes.com

There are not a whole lot of things that get people more wound up than issues around guns. It seems that almost everyone sits pretty firmly on one side of the fence or the other. There are those who think people that are into guns are kind of dangerous and a bit loony, and then there are those that think that guns are important and are protected by our constitution. Well Dinklage is one of those that is firmly into gun control. After the disaster at Sandy Hook, which was a mass shooting at a school in which 26 people were killed, he was in a public service announcement that advocated for gun control as part of the Demand a Plan campaign. This campaign advocated for stricter criminal background checks and tries to get high powered assault rifles off the streets. Whether you agree with him or not, you have to admit he cares.

2 He Has Not Read The Books

via independent.com

So I have a confession to make. I love to read. In fact, I pretty much always have a book going. With that said, I watch hardly any TV at all. Here is the confession though, I love Game of Thrones and have watched every single episode, but I have not read a single word of the novel series, A Song of  Ice and Fire. Maybe it is just that I came across the show first, I don't know. Anyway, Dinklage has not read the books either. I mean I felt kind of bad, but I am not on the show for crying out loud. Dinklage even told this to George Martin, who if you did not know, is the guy that wrote the books. He said that Martin looked a little hurt. All right Peter, I will make you a deal. I will read the books if you will. Call me.

1 He Does Not Buy That He Is A Sex Symbol

via shutterstock.com

There has  been a lot of talk that Dinklage is now actually a bit of a sex symbol after all of his work on Game of Thrones. This would sort of be a first for a little person, but hey, it is obvious at this point that Dinklage is all about firsts. He had this to say about being considered a sex symbol. €œ"Honestly, I think there€™'s an irony in all of this. I take it with a grain of salt. They'€™ll say, €˜'Oh, he€™ is sexy,'€™ but women still go for guys who are six-foot-two. It€™'s nice that people are thinking outside the box, but I don€™'t believe any of it for a minute.€"

Would it be all that surprising if he was, though? Not really. He has done everything else one could possibly do in the business; why can't he be a sex symbol as well? No reason at all that I can see.
