We always hear of the Burj al Arab Hotel in Dubai, which drumbeaters used to proclaim as the only seven-star hotel in the world, or the Plaza Hotel in New York City or the Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris, with its expensive and luxurious royal suites. But do you know that none of these hold the title as the most expensive hotel in the world?
To find out what exactly is the most expensive hotel in the world, we decided to use as basis not the price of a hotel’s most luxurious royal or presidential suite. This kind of rooms can only be used one at a time and does not reflect the average real price that hotel guests have to pay. Instead, we will use the average amount that a hotel visitor has to pay for a standard double room.
And based on this criterion, the crown of the most expensive hotel in the world goes to Le Dune, Forte Village Resort in the island of Sardinia in Italy. Sardinia is actually the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily. The island is an autonomous region of Italy.
Le Dune, Forte Village Resort is located in a seaside area along the southern coast of Sardinia, called Santa Margherita di Pula. Staying here will set you back a hefty $2,539. That’s right, more than two and a half grand for a standard double room. That is around 25 percent more than the second most expensive hotel, the Royal Mansour in Marrakech in Morocco, which charges $2,060 for a similar standard double room. Another hotel in Sardinia, the Hotel Pitrizza in the island’s Porto Cervo area, charges $2,041 per night.

What does $2,539 per night in a hotel get you? Let us try to count the ways.
Let us start with the food. The hotel’s restaurant serves up some of the most visually appealing and best-tasting food that you will ever see and eat. The hotel’s chef takes the time and effort not only to cook a sumptuous meal, but also to create a beautiful presentation of all their gastronomic delights. After all, eating is not only confined to the sense of taste; you must also be attracted to how it looks. I mean, would you even bother to touch a shabby-looking food item?
So be prepared to gain a few pounds. After all, you are on vacation, so this is the time to free up yourself from all the strict and binding rules that you follow everyday. But if you need to hit the gym to maintain your figure so that you can strut around on the beach in a bikini, then the hotel has a modern and state of the art gym available for hotel guests. Be prepared to pony up the cash, though. The hotel charges 160 euros for an hour’s use of the facility with a trainer.
You may be better off losing the extra flab that the hotel’s fabulous food gave you by hitting the sports club instead. Break out into a sweat by playing rugby football or cricket. For the children, a kiddie pool is available at the Kid’s Club, with its swimming pool and well-appointed playground. You can also go bowling or dart around in go-karts.
The rooms itself are comfortable with windows overlooking the hotel’s fertile gardens. The bathroom towards the back has a walk-in shower area. It also leads to a private area with a garden and Jacuzzi.
The Le Dune, Forte Village Resort also has several pools available for its guests. There is one unique pool that you may want to try out, as the pool contains salt water rather than the usual chlorinated fresh water.
And what is a seaside resort if it does not have access to the beach? Guests in the hotel can try out the picturesque, fine beach located just a few minutes away. It can actually be easily reached through the side of the Dune restaurant. You know, that restaurant that serves up some of the most visually appealing and best-tasting food that you will ever see and eat?
Overall, the place is a stunner. It may be expensive, but guests who have been here do not seem to mind as the atmosphere in the hotel makes it all worth your while. You may end up not savoring the other great things that the island of Sardinia can offer.
1 Life Outside the Resort
Sardinia, as a whole, has many other things to offer. The island possesses the typical climate found in the Mediterranean, with average temperature between 11 to 17 degrees Celsius and the sun shining around 135 days each year. The wind may be strong, but it is usually dry and cool.
The island is accessible either by plane or ferry boat. Tourists are everywhere especially in the peak summer months of July and August, and this is when hotel rates spike up considerably. If you prefer a simpler and quieter vacation, September is recommended, as there are fewer tourists, even though the weather is still perfect for a vacation.
Sardinia also offers a lot of activities based on nature, such as boating, camping, climbing, hiking, swimming and windsurfing. You can also enjoy ancient stone monuments from the Nuragic civilization, which dates back to 1500 B.C.
The island also boasts of three national parks, as well as ten regional parks. Around one fourth of the island, covering over 600,000 hectares of land, is environmentally preserved. Aside from these, it also has 60 reserves dedicated to the wildlife, 5 oases for the World Wildlife Foundation, 25 natural monuments and a geomineral park that is preserved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO. Additionally, the water off the upper coast of the island covering 84,000 square kilometers is a marine protected area.
The unique combination of Le Dune, Forte Village Resort’s comfort and the island’s attractions makes the price of the hotel worth it. You may end up planning your next visit before you even end your vacation.
