This year, losing weight is the reigning trend in the car industry. It looks as though shedding pounds and gaining speed were the New Year’s resolutions of each big name car brand this year. While a new car may not mean a new you, it might mean a new driving experience. Major motor companies are stepping up their design game and 2016 is looking to be a stylish year in the car industry. While some cars come with a price tag that breaks the bank, there are others on this most wanted list that come from more affordable brands. Even luxury car brands are bringing down their prices to be more accessible to more drivers.
There are companies you may have never even considered buying from before that were able to make the list after researching and spending the money necessary to make sports car quality vehicles for the everyday driver. They’re following luxury brands when it comes to comfort, style, power and speed and many car enthusiasts have been praising them for it. Better engines, more horsepower, luxury styling, and advanced technology are what’s in this year’s car forecast.
The new year brings many new rides and it was hard to cut it down to just 10. As you’ll notice, most of these cars have a futuristic sports car design(and come with futuristic features as well) and have come a long way from even last year’s models. Whether you’re shopping around for a new ride or you just wanted to know what everyone else is going crazy over, here are 10 of the most wanted cars of 2016.
The TDF in Ferrari F12 TDF stands for Tour De France. No, it’s not meant to reference the well-known long distance bicycle race. Instead, it’s a nod to a famous motor race. The F12 TDF is a diesel derived from the limited edition Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and is Ferrari’s fastest road car ever after the LaFerrai flagship. With a rating of 770 horsepower, the TDF’s 6.3-liter V-12 is the second most powerful natural aspirated engine in production. The TDF also boasts the brand’s first use of rear-wheel steering and has a projected 2.8-second blast from zero to 60 mph. It’s a modern car both in style and technology and features a unique side profile. It’s also 243 pounds lighter than the F12 due to the reduction of glass.
The Cadillac CTS-V made its debut at this year’s Detroit auto show. Sporty for a sedan (and fast, with a top speed of 200mph), the car is breaking boundaries for the German brand. The CTS was born in 2003 and, each year since, has been improved as Cadillac continually strives to top its German rivals. The CTS-V has made Cadillac a major contender for German competitors Audi RS, BMW M, and Mercedes AMG. The Cadillac CTS-V is rated at 640 horsepower and projected a zero-to-60 blitz of 3.7 seconds (these numbers match the BMW M5’s). Though the engine roars when reaching high speeds, drivers can start the car in tour mode to keep the muffler bypass valves closed to quiet the sound. Also, the car features tires made with two different tread rubber compounds to both extend tire life and maximize cornering grip. These Pilot Super Sport tires were made by Michelin who specifically tailored them for this car. Other features, like the use of the Performance Tracing Management System, Performance Data Recorder, and a lighter weight (the CTS-V is at 4145 pounds, lighter than its competitors), puts it on many a car lover’s wish list.
One of the more affordable rides on this list, the Stingray gets 455 hp, 460 lb-ft and a power-to-weight ratio rivaling many supercars. The Stingray has a zero to 60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. It takes three levels to unlock the targa- which many people prefer over a retractable roof- in the convertible version and there’s also a coupe version available as well. It’s received rave reviews on how smooth it is to drive and for featuring Apple CarPlay on its 8-inch MyLinch touchscreen interface. CarPlay allows the driver to integrate Apple Maps, their phone, iMessage, and music into the car’s screen.
While Twitter and Instagram leaks foiled Audi’s plans for a dazzling reveal, they didn’t make the car any less exciting. The Audi R8 is modified from the first generation R8 into the MSS (Modular Sporty System) architecture and is 100 pounds lighter. The bones are those of the Lamborghini Huracán but adjusted for more space and comfort. In addition to the trunk at the front of the car, there is also space behind the front seats for storage. The new R8 is wider, lower, and has a more dramatic look than before. For the first time, it’s available with hard-core performance tires. It takes 3.5 seconds to get from 0 to 62 mph and the car has a rated 610 horsepower, 413 pounds-foot of torque and can get up to 205mph. Perhaps most exciting about the car is that the R8 comes with a sophisticated version of Audi’s “virtual cockpit.”
Deemed “the most attainable and usable McLaren to date” by Donna Falconer, product manager for the Sports Series of which the 570S is the first, the McLaren 570S is still out of most people’s price range. The car is the first in McLaren’s segment to combine rear-wheel drive, a mid-engine layout, and a carbon-fiber structure. It’s made for the everyday driver, but adjustments can be made for racers. The car gets 562 horsepower and can get from zero to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds, 124 mph in 9.5 seconds, and tops out at 204 mph (slightly quicker than the Porsche 911 Turbo S and Lamborghini Huracán). While the Sports Series variations will make McLarens more common on the road (the automaker’s output will go from 1800 cars in 2014 to 4000 by 2017), they’ll still be hard to find.
The M235i shares the characteristics of both an aggro M car and a standard sports coupe. It’s a throwback and has the same general look and structure as the E46 M3 of the early 2000s. However, this version uses a turbocharger to maximize horsepower- reaching 320 horsepower- and stops shorter and corners harder. It goes from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and is an easy ride as the steering informs you of every subtly of the road and is the right car for nearly any road(it can come also in all-wheel drive). It’s a small car that combines both sportiness and comfort though the backseat is slightly cramped. Aside from the small backseat, everything else about this car gets great reviews.
The trunk is small, but features like 550 horsepower and improved styling make up for it. It’s been compared to a Porsche 918 Spyder, since it’s able to drive both on engine torque or electrically. According to NSX project leader Ted Klaus, the 2016 NSX is “a human-centered supercar.” It took a lot of time and money to get this end result, which still holds a lot of similarities to the original NSX. This version, though, has more modern styling and a new engine, which offers a ridiculous amount of power.
The eighth-generation Maxima, which Nissan calls “the four-door sports car” is a sports sedan with exciting performance and design. This 2016 version of the Maxima is 82 pounds lighter and has gone up 10 horsepower to get to 300 horsepower. It’s also been redesigned to reduce any of the past negative characteristics. With a beautiful interior design, seams stitched wonderfully, a flat-bottom steering wheel, remote starting and incomparable navigation, you can't go wrong with this gem of a car.
Coming out to the U.S. this spring is the 2016 Ford Focus RS. Preorders are already coming in, though, so there might not be many available by then. It’s more than likely that each one Ford makes (they just went into production in Germany a few days ago), will get sold. It has 350 horsepower, 305 pound-feet of torque and is made for drifting; it even has a button for going sideways! The RS is one of twelve performance vehicles coming from Ford through 2020. The all-wheel drive hatchback has the look of a family car with the ability of a racing car.
The 2016 version of the Ford Mustang GT Coupe is more sophisticated than its predecessors, being more comfortable with the multilink rear suspension, and featuring an interior more insulated. Available in the GT Coupe are adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning. The 5.0 liter Coyote V-8 engine gives it 435 horsepower and the car goes zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Though the starting price is $33,395, the Premium coupe is available for $37,295 and comes with an exuberant amount of features, such as an improved automatic climate control, leather front seats that can cool or warm up passengers, an impressive stereo, and selectable driving modes among others.
