The name of Bayerische Motoren Berke AG, or Bavarian Motor Works in English, or BMW for short, is a name synonymous with class and luxury. Just the mere mention of the brand is enough to evoke images of quality and reliability.
The company can traced its roots back to 1916 in Munich in Germany during the height of World War I. Franz Josef Popp established it as the Bayerische Fulgeugwerke AG, or BFW. It was originally engaged in aircraft engine manufacturing but the German defeat in the war forced the cessation of production. In 1923, some of the restrictions were lifted and BMW started making motorcycles. In 1928, the company expanded its line to automobiles when it created the Dixi, a car licensed from the English automaker called Austin Motor Company and based primarily on the Austin 7.
Current BMW Car Models
The car company has come a long way since the Dixi. Aside from producing 125,284 motorcycles in 2012, BMW also manufactured 1,861,826 automobiles during the same period. It has total assets of $173.73 billion, with revenues amounting to $101.25 billion and net profit of $6.75 billion.
Its models range the whole gamut of designs and builds, including the hatchback, coupe, convertible, sedan, wagon, sports utility vehicles and sports roadster. Some of its current models include the following:

- 3 Series sedan and wagon that were introduced in 2012

The BMW M-Technik
To help facilitate the racing program of the German automobile giant, the company established a subsidiary back in 1972. It was called the M-Technik, or BMW Motorsport, or simply BMW M.
Eventually, the subsidiary started supplementing the parent company’s line of automobiles. The models are specially modified and presented as higher trim versions of BMW cars. Specifically, the M cars boast of souped-up engines, suspensions, transmission and aerodynamics. Both the exterior look and interior trims are also modified to set them apart. To ensure that the cars are up to the expected standards, the cars are tested and tuned at the company’s private facility in Germany at the Nurburgring racing circuit.
BMW M has a modified version of almost every model of the parent company, except for the 7 Series and the X1 and X3 SUVs. The M versions of the X5 and X6, however, were developed by the parent company itself and not by BMW M.

The BMW Concept M4 Coupe
During the Pebble Beach/Monterey automobile weekend in the middle of August 2013, the company introduced its concept M4 coupe. BMW M proudly proclaims the vehicle as a synthesis of motor racing genes and non-restrictive suitability for everyday use.
The launch of the concept featured a television spot that was produced by Samuel Bayer, a Hollywood director. The print ads, on the other hand, made use of driving shots taken by Uwe Duttmann, who simulated high speed by the use of ropes to create a motion blur.
The car comes in an exclusive color scheme that the company calls the Aurum Dust. BMW M has yet to release details of the car’s drivetrain nor of the M4 coupe’s other performance specifications, but the look of the vehicle leaves no doubt of its BMW heritage.
The front part of the vehicle has the famous face of BMW, meaning it has two round LED headlamps, with the iconic power dome hood and large air inlets. The rear has twin tailpipes, as the M4 continues the tradition of the previous M models.
The wheel arches at the sides are all buffed out. These help shelter the 20-inch alloy rims that are designed in the traditional style of the M models. BMW fans know that this means five-filigree double spokes with polished outer surfaces. The gaps are just enough to provide a peek at the M Carbon ceramic brakes.
The BMW concept M4 coupe will also be sporting carbon fiber reinforced plastic, or CFRP, material. This will be evident in the front splitter, roof and the rear diffuser. Due to the CFRP roof, the weight of the vehicle will be reduced significantly and the center of gravity of the car will be lower. The rear diffuser, meanwhile, will help jack up the down force and increase the speed of the car even further. Additionally, it gives the M4 coupe a tough look and brawny appeal.
Overall, the BMW concept M4 coupe is an exciting addition to the lineup of BMW M. A production version of the vehicle is expected to be out by next year.
