Most normal people like us who aren't millionaires would be astonished by what celebs have in their homes or on their properties. And these things are often excessive and expensive. What all celebs have in common is their amenities. They all tend to have a chef's kitchen, a screening room, a wine cellar, a pool house, a three-hole golf course, and a lighted tennis court. While these are things that surprise us, for celebs, these are just things that they tend to have in their mansions. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
There has to be something else to make a celebrity house stand out among other mansions. That's why John Travolta has two (!!) runways on his property, as well as five jets. That's why Paris Hilton built a dog house for her pooches that costs over $300K, which is the price of a house outside where celebs tend to congregate. Then there's the moat that surrounds Dr. Dre's mansion, which is used as a security measure (why not invest in a security alarm system?) Want to learn more? Well, today's your lucky day! Here are 12 things celebs tend to have in their mansions (which they hope others don't have) as well as 12 things we actually wish we could have --if only we won the lottery!
24 Tend To Have: Michael Jordan's Indoor Basketball Court
Michael Jordan's former mansion in Illinois had its own indoor basketball court. It should surprise no one since Jordan is the king of the court. The full-sized indoor court, complete with the "Jumpman" logo at center court, is a rarity. Most high net-worth people would build an outdoor court. But indoors is one-of-a-kind. In 2015, the mansion was listed at $29 million but wasn't sold. Three years later, in 2018, the mansion was reduced to $14.85 million. That's quite a bargain! Still, this is too sports-centric for us. We don't like to sweat. (Source: BusinessInsider)
23 Wish We Could Have: Lady Gaga's Bowling Alley
In 2014, Lady Gaga bought an enormous mansion in Malibu that costs $23 mill, according to Curbed. The house's many windows have breathtaking views of mountains as well as Zuma Beach. The one luxury thing that sticks out from the requisite wine cellar, gourmet kitchen and pools is Gaga's two-lane bowling alley that's modeled after a 1960s era alley. It's quite rare to see an actual bowling alley in a celeb's house, but then again, Gaga's house is decadent and even has its own elevator. We want that bowling alley! (Source: HouseBeautiful)
22 Tend To Have: Mike Tyson's Solid Gold Bathtub
Mike Tyson is the undisputed heavyweight champion in the world. He's also known as eccentric because he routinely buys exorbitantly expensive luxury goods, like the two "pet" Bengal tigers that he used to keep, and which both cost around $150,000. Tyson used to live it up in a mansion in the 80s and 90s, but due to debt, he had to move out. One crazy-arse thing that Tyson bought for his home was a hand-made bathtub entirely made of 24 karat gold. What's wrong with porcelain? And what was wrong with Tyson? The gold tub set Tyson back $2.2 mill! We'll pass. (Source: WashingtonPost)
21 Wish We Could Have: John Travolta's Jet Runways
John Travolta is a flight enthusiast and certified private pilot. No wonder his luxury mansion in Florida has two runways that lead directly to his front door for his own private jets. This is something we would love to have in our homes. Want to go to London at the last minute? Well, all Travolta has to do is open his front door and choose one of his five aircraft that are kept on the property! So much freedom! As Travolta said, "We designed the house for the jets and to have at our access the world at a moment’s notice, and we succeeded at that."
20 Tend To Have: Paris Hilton's Dog Mansion
Paris Hilton's dogs have their own dog house home which is probably nicer than your actual house. Hilton spent $325,000 on building the 300-square-foot home. Yep, you can buy a real house for that much money. The dog house is located in her garden overlooking her pool, and is a replica of Hilton's real house, a Spanish-style mansion fortified by a wrought iron fence. The dog home features a chandelier, two floors and features outlandish and ridiculous items like a spiral staircase, a wardrobe for her dogs' outfits, mini designer furniture, a chandelier and, of course, heating and A/C. This is just excess. (Source: People)
19 Wish We Could Have: Jim Clark's Lakeside Views And Observatory
Netscape co-founder Jim Clark, the 70-year-old Texas-born billionaire, and Australian Victoria’s Secret model Kristy Hinze, his 35-year-old wife, purchased a 17,000-square-foot, six-bedroom mansion in Greenwich, CT from famed director and actor Ron Howard. This house has the requisite luxury things (indoor tennis court, movie theater) but what makes it so special is that it has breathtaking panoramic views of Converse Lake and an observatory. The observatory is impressive, featuring a professional grade Meade telescope to gaze into the heavens. We would love to star gaze, so this is something we wish we had. (Source: NYPost)
18 Tend To Have: Dr. Dre's Moat
The rapper and Beats co-founder Dr. Dre purchased a $40 million mansion in 2014. This 18,298-square-foot mansion is the former home of Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, who built and designed the house from scratch after purchasing the property in 2009 for $11.75 mill. The house is impressive mostly because it has its own moat. In the old days, moats were able to protect castles from attack. Dr. Dre's moat is a body of water surrounding a house. The moat also contains koi fish and is reminiscent of a castle in a fairytale. A moat? Really? (Source: IGN)
17 Wish We Could Have: Leonardo DiCaprio – The Eco-Friendly Apartment
Before selling it, Leonardo DiCaprio owned a $10 mill eco-friendly apartment in Greenwich Village. Because he cares about the environment this apartment was tricked out with eco-friendly and wellness amenities designed to boost his health. His showers are vitamin C infused, which eliminate chlorine and promotes healthy hair and skin. The entire apartment has an aromatherapy air supply, which makes the air smell like various scents to enhance his mood. There's also a reflexology walkway made from stones that stimulate and massages the soles of the feet. There's also a circadian lighting design and ultraviolet lighting which sterilizes harmful airborne microbes. We would definitely wish we had this spa-like home, as you're doing good while looking good. (Source: Rent)
16 Tend To Have: Shaquille O’Neal – 30ft Bed
Shaquille O’Neal stands at 7’1″ and weighs around 325 pounds. So what bed does he sleep in, as even a California King can't contain him? He liked a Tempur-Pedic bed while shopping for beds, but took to Instagram to show how silly he looked as his legs were dangling. In the same post, he asked the company if they could make a bed for him that was "Shaqsize." And Tempur-Pedic didn't fail him when they eventually delivered a 72" by 98" mattress to Shaq's mansion. This is something only O'Neal needs to have. (Source: Si)
15 Wish We Could Have: Jerry Seinfeld's Baseball Field
Mets fan Jerry Seinfeld purchased his East Hampton estate from singer Billy Joel. As soon as he bought it, extensive construction and improvements that Seinfeld wanted were made. Two pools were installed on the property, the main house, with seven bedrooms, was renovated, and a five-bedroom guest cottage and a 22-car garage (!) were created. Like many celebs, what they tend to have in their mega-mansions if they enjoy sports is an indoor tennis court, an Olympic-sized pool, a squash court or a basketball court. Seinfeld opted for something rarer that other celebs don't have: a baseball field. Perfect for pickup games in the summer! We want this! (Source: NYPost)
14 Tend To Have: Drake's Luxury Outdoor Pool With Waterfalls
Drake loves pools. No wonder, as his mansion situated in Hidden Hills includes a huge pool with waterfalls, an 80-foot water slide (is he 12?), iron torches, and a few manmade grottos. He found the property when searching for "craziest residential pools" and fell in love with the house and its many amenities. Drake really does have a passion for pools as he's building an Olympic-sized one in his mansion in Toronto. He said, "One of my goals in life is to have the biggest residential pool on the planet." The grottos scare us, so we'll pass. (Source: La.Curbed)
13 Wish We Could Have: Bill Gates's Enormous Library
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is the richest man in the world. It shouldn't be too surprising then that Gates owns an insanely extravagant home. One thing that Gates has in his mansion is a 2,100-square-foot library that has a dome roof and two secret bookcases, including one that reveals a hidden bar. The library contains the Codex Leicester, a 16th-century Leonardo da Vinci manuscript that Gates bought at auction for $30.8 million in 1994. This library is one thing that celebs tend to have. Oprah Winfrey, Karl Lagerfeld, Julianne Moore, Diane Keaton and more all have a full-size library in their estates. Since we love books, Gates' library is what we actually wish we could have. 12 Tend To Have: Hugh Hefner's Luxury Outdoor Pool With Waterfalls
Yep, waterfalls are a thing that celebs tend to have in their estates. Before Drake had his own waterfalls, the late Hugh Hefner had his own spacious pool that included hot tubs and waterfalls. His $54 mill Playboy mansion in Los Angeles also includes the requisite trappings of wealth, like a fitness center, movie theater room, game room with a pool table and, of course, a wine cellar and a tennis court. Oh, and lest we forget, there is a guest house. Of course there is, since every celeb tends to have one, or else a pool house. (Source: EOnline)
11 Wish We Could Have: Will Smith's Own Zipcode
You know you have oodles of cash when your mansion is so big that it has its own zip code. That's the case for Will Smith's home in Calabasas, CA, which cost him $20 mill. It's so large that it has basketball court, a golf course, a volleyball court, a tennis court, a built-in trampoline, a recording studio, a pool room with a billiard table, a movie theater room, a free-form pool, as well as all the trappings that celebs tend to have in their mansions. Now that Will Smith has his own zip code, he's been called “Fresh Prince” of Calabasas. We love the idea of having your own zip code. Think of what you're friends will say! 10 Tend To Have: Oprah Winfrey's Man-Made Lake
Oprah Winfrey's mansion is situated in Montecito, California. She purchased the home in 2001 for $50 mill, and it boasts both mountain and ocean views. Like what most celebs tend to have in their mansions, Oprah's house also boasts a wine cellar, a gourmet kitchen, and two theaters. But what's different about the house is that it doesn't have a pond or moat, as others do. Instead, Oprah went all out by creating a man-made lake. Now that's just excessive since her property is surrounded on all sides by trees and has those ocean views. We wouldn't want this; if we had a pool, that would be enough for us. (Source: SFGate)
9 Wish We Could Have: Mariah Carey's Ultimate Multiple Closets
8 Tend To Have: Randy Travis' Shooting Range
7 Wish We Could Have: Ryan Seacrest's Three Guest Houses
6 Tend To Have: Neil Patrick Harris' Magic Man Cave
5 Wish We Could Have: The Panic Room (Various Celebs)
The Jodie Foster movie thriller Panic Room introduced the world to a panic room, a place to hide and be safe during a home invasion. These impenetrable rooms are customized, (such as its size) but most include a panic button, phone or some way to notify the police, closed-circuit TVs to see inside and outside of your house and some contraption designed to store food and water. Some panic rooms are hidden, such as behind a bookcase or behind an armoire. So which celebs have this now "stylish" feature in their home? Madonna, Joan Rivers, Paul McCartney, George Clooney, and Amal Clooney and Kevin Smith, among others, all own one. We want one too. Especially if you can open a bookcase that looks permanently attached to the wall but which actually opens up to your very own panic room. We know, it's excessive, but we have to agree with celebs that it's very stylish.
4 Tend To Have: Olivier Sarkozy and Mary-Kate Olsen's Hall Of Mirrors And Ball Room
3 Wish We Could Have: Britney Spears' "Restrained" House
Britney Spears has two mansions in Thousand Oaks, CA. She sold one in 2017 and kept the other one. The 20-acre estate, which she bought in 2015 for $7.4 million, has an Italian villa theme. It has five bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms. And here comes the amenities that all other celebs tend to have: a library (this one oak-paneled rather than white), a screening room, a 3,800 bottle wine cellar, a pool house with a kitchen and a bath, a three-hole golf course and a lighted tennis court. Do celebs get together to discuss what they should have in their home? Because this house's things resembles Jerry Seinfeld's own amenities. But even though these things seem like requirements, we would love Spears' house because it's not excessive. (Source: Variety)
2 Tend To Have: Kendall Jenner's $52,000 Couch
Of course, what celebs tend to have in their mansions is expensive furniture. That's a given. You'd expect the furniture to look good. Kendall Jenner bought her house in 2016 and, at the time, was looking for furniture to fill it. She told E! News, "One day, I just had a vision about the entry room and knew exactly what it needed. As soon as I saw the couch, I fell in love. The ‘Boa' by Edra couch . . . has a really groovy navy with purple shimmer. It works perfectly in the space!" What planet is she from? The couch has no structure; it looks like a bunch of tubes intertwined with another in this tacky Las Vegas-like blue color." Does she want her FOYER to look like Romper Room? We pass on this piece of arse. And by the way, that couch costs $52,000.
1 Wish We Could Have: Kim Kardashian's Makeup Room
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West sold their 9,000 square foot Bel-Air mansion for $18 mill. When they lived there, they enjoyed the necessary celeb amenities, including a tennis court, an elevator, a basketball court, and a bowling alley like the one Lady Gaga has. So, yep, they have everything other celebs have. But one thing that stands out and is unique is that Kim had her own room for a makeup salon. Can you believe it! She uses the salon every day when she puts on her makeup. She also uses it for prep for her reality show, where she is handled by her stylists. So the room has paid for itself with its countless use. We want this too. Think of it. The room doesn't just have great light to put on makeup. Kim gets her hair done here. She picks out her wardrobe she's planning to wear from her assistants. Keeping it all together is a great use of space.
