The street artist Banksy, whose work first appeared on the streets of London for free, has now been selling for record-setting prices at auction houses around the world.

Moving from streets and galleries to museums and auction houses, Banksy has garnered an enormous amount of wealth while maintaining his anonymity. With a purported net worth of over $50 million, original artworks from Banksy have set stunning records at auction.

His work has outperformed several well-established artists who have previously held the record for their high sale prices, including Damien Hirst and D*Face.

His work has also landed him in the private collections of several iconic celebrities and influencers including Christina Aguilera and Brad Pitt, who spent over $1 million on an original piece.

Here are the top 10 iconic Banksy artworks that have fetched over $1 million at auction.

Vote to Love, 2018 $1.2 million

Banksy altered a found “Vote to Leave” placard from the UK’s 2016 Brexit Campaign. Creating an optimistic twist on the political statement while simultaneously incorporating his iconic heart balloon imagery, the piece fetched a whopping $1,241,583 at the Contemporary Art Evening Auction at Sotheby’s London in February of 2020.

Love is in the Bin, 2006, $1.4 million

Originally titled "Girl With Balloon", when this iconic piece was sold at auction, Banksy had one more prank to pull on the art world. Banksy had installed an automatic paper shredder into the frame. Just as the gavel was smashed, the painting self-destructed, shredding into several dozen strips. Even though the contraption malfunctioned halfway through, the iconic image made headlines and purportedly increased the value beyond its initial selling price of $1.4 million. The piece was later put on display at Sotheby’s New Bond Street gallery.

Girl with Balloon & Morons Sepia, 2007 $1.7 million

This dual-image composition featured both Banksy’s iconic balloon girl along with an ironic commentary on the art auction scene. This work originally appeared as an edition of 8 made by the artist in 2007. The piece sold at Phillips in London in October of 2020, nearly doubling its originally estimated price.

Monkey Poison, 2004 $2.2 million

Featuring his frequently referenced chimpanzee character, this modern take on the Old Master work sold at Phillips in New York in 2020 for $2,233,152.

Originally put up for auction by Kim Logchies-Prins of the Moco Museum, the Amsterdam-based gallery sold the work in an attempt to offer salaries to several employees who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

Her good deed was rewarded in proper Banksy fashion by a surprise promise from the anonymous purchaser who offered to lend the work to the museum for an additional year.

Keep it Spotless, 2007 $1.7 million

Auctioned by Sotheby’s Charity Auction in New York, this piece set the original cap for Banksy’s most expensive piece at auction.

Banksy added a stencil to an original Damien Hirst canvas painting which served not only as a cultural commentary on the art world but also increased the value of the piece. Originally estimated at $350,000, the piece sold well for over five times its expected value.

Forgive Us Our Trespassing, 2011 $8.3 million

This iconic piece was created with the help of more than 100 students at the City of Angels School in a project that encouraged children to create art. It was showcased as part of an installation at the 2011 exhibition Art in the Streets held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

After appearing in several auctions, the piece eventually escalated in value to $8.3 million when it was sold at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in 2020.

Devolved Parliament, 2009 $12.2 million

Banksy’s most expensive work is a commentary on the House of Commons with chimpanzees replacing politicians. This oil-on-canvas painting was originally titled "Question Time "and was displayed at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery during Banksy’s 2009 show.

After being sold into a private collection in 2011, it reappeared at Sotheby’s London auction in October of 2019. With an estimated pre-sale price of just $1.5 million, the work shattered all expectations and launched Banksy into becoming one of the most valuable and highly coveted artists of all time.
