The mystery owner of George Washington’s Mt. Vernon mansion is none other than Dan Synder, the billionaire owner of the Washington Commanders. Synder, who owns the NFL team formerly known as the Washington Redskins, dropped over $48 million in cash for the property. He paid an additional $2 million for the furniture that came with the historic estate.

The $48 million sale of the mansion has broken the record for the most expensive property ever to be sold in the Washington D.C. area. The previous record, held by the late AOL founder Jim Kimsey's estate in McLean, Virginia, sold for $45 million in 2020.

Rumor has it, Snyder is only the fifth person to own the property, which was originally purchased and inhabited by George Washington. Snyder got a good deal on the property, as the seller had an original asking price of $60 million.

America's first president purchased the property in 1760. Originally the property spanned 1,800 acres. Today a majority of that land now belongs to the American Horticultural Society and serves as a museum.

The home's listing describes the 16.5-acre property as having  unspoiled views of the Potomac River, nicknamed “the Nation’s River.” At the center of the property is the 16,000 square foot main home, and nearby sits a separate carriage home.

Inside the mansion, there's plenty of space with seven bedrooms and eight full baths among the beautifully refurbished hallways. The home is entirely automated, as per the listing, including utilities, geothermal heating, security, entertainment systems, and backup power.

Amenities include a game room with a full bar, a movie theater, a home gym with views of the Potomac. There is also a luxurious spa area that features not only a sauna and steam room but an indoor resistance pool as well.

The guest house is a sizable 2,600 square feet and features three additional bedrooms.

According to the New York Post, the historic home was last purchased by Robert Stevens, the former CEO of Lockheed Martin, for $18.6 million in 2014.

Dan Synder is one of the world’s richest men, with a fortune estimated to be $4 billion. He originally purchased the Washington Commanders in 1999 in a deal valued at over $800 million. Today, he owns about 60% of the team and its value has increased significantly. The team is now valued at $4.2 billion, according to Forbes.
