Before its demolition in 2002, Hollywood starlet Jayne Mansfield's legendary Pink Palace loomed over 10010 Sunset Boulevard in gaudy extravagance. The prolific actress of such Golden Age classics as Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1957) and The Girl Can't Help It (1956) bought the pink Goliath of a mansion and lived a lavish life for the tabloids to document. It's seems that her name never ceases to escape the subject of the news even after her passing as allegedly, the ghost of Mansfield couldn't let go of her plush dream home and, as people are speculating on social media, has haunted it ever since she left this Earth!
The palace was purchased by Mansfield and her former husband Mickey Hargitay 1957. The Spanish Colonial home (which had a value of $670,000 in today's market) was a masterpiece in architecture with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Its stunning pink walls were filled to the brim with lovely decoration. From the fabulous ceiling to floor cotton candy carpet to the romantic, heart shaped tub in the master bathroom, the house put Barbie's Dreamhouse to shame. There was even a 40 foot pool built by her then-husband, per request her request, with the phrase "I love you Jaynie” spelled out in mosaic of gold leaf tiles.
After Mansfield's passing in 1967, the palace was the home to many high level celebs who all had similar chillingly similar incidents. For instance, the home was leased to none other than loveable Beatles drummer, Ringo Starr. Though, according to Architecture Digest, Starr wasn't too keen on the entirely pink color scheme. Astonishingly, at every attempts Starr made to paint the walls white, the pink paint sept through.
Not spooky enough? Well, UK singer Engelbert Humperdinck, who adored Mansfield, had an even more chilling experience when he bought the home in 1967. Humperdinck took up the grim task of restoring the palace to its former flamboyance, in honor of the late star.
"Once, I saw a figure in a long, black dress in front of me. It was Jayne, but it wasn’t frightening," the singer tells Hollywood.com, "I was about to say ‘Hello, Jayne’ when I realized she was dead. I didn’t say anything, and then she faded out."
While the Pink Palace is no longer on thid physical plane, it's legend lives out in infamy - much like it's former starlet, owner. And though you have doubts that Mansfield's ghost lingered within the mansion, just think, 'Would you want to leave a house that nice?'
