The Story Of Mago Island

It was in 1860s when the Ryder brothers from Australia have established a cotton plantation in the said Island. About twenty years after the cotton plantation flourished in the island, a well-established sugar cane plantation with a sugar mill was built in 1884. However just after eleven years the mills and the plantation were shut down in 1895 as it was dismantled and used in order to enlarge the Penang Mill in Ra. The Ryders clan soon was succeeded by the Barron family. The Barron family ran a successful copra plantation on the Mago Island for a long time until they donated the massive historic mansion in the Fiji capital city Suva, Barron House, to the Fiji Government.

Through the years, the ownership of the island has transferred from one owner to another until 2005 when Hollywood actor and director Mel Gibson bought the Mago Island from the hands of Tokyu Corporation. Despite the protests of the inhabitants of the Mago Island who were displaced in the 1860s to prevent Gibson to buy the Island, the sale pushed through.
