Alex Trebek’s Studio City estate is officially off the market. Although it went within a year of being listed, the sale didn’t go as planned, as the home sold for less than $500,000 of the original asking price.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Jean Trebek (the widow of the famed Jeopardy host) accepted $6.45 million for the estate. She originally listed it in January for $7 million. The couple’s daughter Emily Trebek as well as Renee Ogiens of Compass handled the sale, while Andrew Dinsky of Equity Union represented the buyer.
The Trebek family may have been hoping to make more from the estate, but it’s being reported as Studio City’s second most expensive sale of the year.
With over 10,000 square feet of living space, the home features plenty of leg room. It comes with 5 bedrooms, 7 full bathrooms, and 4 half-bathrooms. Its other features include 4 fireplaces, a home theatre, library, bar, and a butler’s pantry. It sits on 1.5 acres.
Alex and Jean originally bought the property in 1991 for $2.15 million, meaning the home tripled in value during their three decades of ownership.
Jean put the property on the market over a year after Alex’s death. The television personality passed away in November 2020 at the age of 80 after a long-time battle with pancreatic cancer. He first shared his diagnosis publicly in March 2019.
In 2020, a quote from Alex’s autobiography caused concern after it implied he was considering stopping treatment for his cancer.
"I feel the need to clarify my quote that if my course of cancer treatment does not continue to work, I would consider stopping treatment," he later clarified. "That quote from the book was written BEFORE my current regimen, and I was going through some bad times."
Despite his diagnosis, Alex continued to film Jeopardy episodes days up until this death. He hosted the game show for 37 years. He won 8 Emmy’s for his role.
Alex and Jean, who share two children together, originally purchased the Studio City estate shortly after their wedding. Prior to the estate’s sale, Jean reportedly bought a house nearby.
Dirt reported that Jean closed the $3.8 million deal in January. Her new estate is considerably smaller, sitting on 0.3 acres with 3,000 square feet of living space. It comes with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.
