In a new interview with Drew Barrymore, The View’s Whoopi Goldberg says that in 2004 she was blacklisted in Hollywood after she made some jokes about President George W. Bush at a fundraiser for John Kerry at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
During her appearance, she mocked the Bush administration, using the president’s last name as a sexual reference. As a result of her comments, she says she was overlooked in Hollywood for film roles and television appearances and didn’t work for several years. She was also dropped by Slim-Fast from their ad campaign.
"I lost my ability to make a living, I lost any kind of things that I had going on that would bring money in, so I didn't work for five years," she told Barrymore.
In 2007, Goldberg says she was contacted by Barbara Walters who asked her to join The View. By that time, the Oscar-winning actress says she had gone through much of her savings taking care of her family. That same year, Goldberg announced that she would be retiring from acting since she was no longer sent scripts.
In 2010, after several years of voice acting, she starred in Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls with Janet Jackson, Phylicia Rashad, Thandie Newton, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, and Macy Gray. Later that same year, she voiced Stretch in Toy Story 3.
On September 8, Goldberg will return for season 24 of The View with co-hosts Joy Behar, Meghan McCain, Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines. Meanwhile, Barrymore is also launching her own talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show, which will begin airing in syndication on September 14.
Goldberg will also be co-starring in The Stand, an upcoming miniseries, based on Stephen King’s 1978 novel of the same name. Goldberg will play Mother Abagail, who leads the "good" survivors of the Captain Trips plague and claims to be a prophet of God. The series is set to be released on CBS All Access on December 17, 2020.
