There is a myth or old wives tale that says drinking lemon water, especially if it is hot water, will help you lose weight. People swear this trick works but does it really or is it all in their heads?
Having a glass of water with lemon in the morning to allegedly "flush out toxins" and "wake up your metabolism" is a craze many people believe as they strive to lose weight. PopSugar decided to find out if this theory is correct or if it is just another gimmick people have fallen prey to.
First, there is no downfall to drinking water, with or without lemon. It is imperative to stay hydrated at all times, but even more so if you are trying to drop those unwanted pounds. Dietitian Amanda Baker Lemein has shared drinking lemon water alone will not instantly make you lose weight. It does not speed up your metabolism nor does it decrease your calorie consumption. Those two factors are vital to losing weight.

A couple of misconceptions regarding lemon water are that it will increase your rate of digestion and also help you feel full. Sadly, neither of these is accurate either. Jim White, a personal trainer and owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, confirms the pectins in lemons, which is a fiber, is not enough to make you feel full. Also, he said lemon water might affect your digestive system, but only for a short amount of time. The time period is not enough to produce weight loss.
Drinking lemon water is also supposed to be a great way to detox your body, which will result in some pounds lost. However, according to White, this is also a misconception. There is zero scientific proof lemon water will provide any detoxifying effects on your body.
🍋 Drink warm lemon water in the morning to speed up your metabolism and detox your body! Just kidding. Lemon water isn't going to help with either of those things! https://t.co/iXgryYTS8p #lemondetox #lemon #metabolism #detox #fatloss #weightloss #weightlossjourney pic.twitter.com/3cLuYQKHVz— Maria B. Now all of this might be bumming you out, especially if you love lemon water. However, it does have vitamin C, which is excellent for your immune system and, of course, you stay hydrated so don't stop drinking it. You will have to manage your expectations though when it comes to weight loss.
Were you surprised to find out lemon water does nothing to help you lose pounds?
