On Wednesday’s Time 100 special, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle urged viewers to participate in “the most important election of our lifetime.” Some interpreted this as an endorsement of Joe Biden, including one White House reporter who asked Donald Trump during a press briefing what he thought of the royal couple encouraging “people to vote for Joe Biden.”
In response, the president said, “I’m not a fan of hers ... and she probably has heard that. But I wish a lot of luck to Harry, ‘cause he’s gonna need it.” The couple, who is currently living in California with their son, Archie, is known to support several progressive causes that are at odds with Trump’s agenda.
In the special, Meghan said, “When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter — because you do — and you deserve to be heard.” Yet it was Harry who seemed to address Trump directly, “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity,” he added.
Harry also explained that he won’t to be able to vote in the US elections and has never been able to vote in the UK. In response to his statement, Buckingham Palace said, "We would not comment. The Duke is not a working member of the Royal Family, and any comments he makes are made in a personal capacity."
Harry and Meghan moved to the North America this year to take a “step back” as senior members of the royal family. They are now focused on their nonprofit foundation, Archewell, and recently signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce content for the streaming service, including scripted series, docuseries, documentaries, features and children’s programming.
During the Time 100 special, which also featured Sen. Kamala Harris, former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, and author Tomi Adeyemi, Meghan also stated, “As we work to reimagine the world around us, let’s challenge ourselves to build communities of compassion, while Harry added, “Tonight reminds us of how important it is to watch out for each other, to care for each other and to inspire each other. We are incredibly proud to join you in this historic moment in time.”
