Amazon Prime’s runaway hit The Boys is getting a spinoff. According to Variety, the streaming service is fast-tracking development on a new series just weeks after debuting Season 2. Based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys follows a team of vigilantes fighting to expose a group of corrupt superheroes.
Although Season 2 is still underway, with new episodes airing each Friday, Amazon has reported that viewership has grown from Season 1 by 89%, making it the most-watched global launch of an Amazon original series ever. The spinoff will be set in an exclusive superhero college run by Vought International.
The new series is expected to be as bold and raunchy as the original, exploring the lives of superhero undergrads competing by any means necessary for a spot on a superhero team. The spinoff has been described as part The Hunger Games, part college satire. The pilot is being written by Craig Rosenberg, an Australian producer and writer known for The Uninvited (2009) and After the Sunset (2004).
In addition to the spinoff, Amazon is prepping season three of the series, which will include most of the original cast. Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and Butcher (Karl Urban) are expected to reunite as The Boys, while Homelander (Antony Starr), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott), The Deep (Chace Crawford) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) will presumably return as members of The Seven. Filming for the third season is scheduled to begin in 2021.
“Amazon, in a bold and historic push to expand their ‘weirdo’ demographic, has greenlit Season 3 of The Boys. The writers and I are hard at work in the (virtual) writer’s room and we’re sad to say, the world has given us way too much material. We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that’s up to a microscopic virus,” executive producer Eric Kripke said.
