There’s a lot of protein in Starbucks’ new protein blended cold brews.
It’s been a hot summer, and with global warming, it’s only going to get hotter. Having that morning cup of joe just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when it’s already a bajillion degrees outside.
If you’re a company like Starbucks, global warming is doubly bad news. Not only will it cause terrible social and political upheaval, but it’ll also cut into your bottom line when people stop buying hot coffee!
That’s why they’ve started offering cold brews--iced coffee drinks that can be blended with whatever else you could ask for. And now, Starbucks is offering exactly what we all need to get our morning’s off on the right foot: protein.
Starting today, participating Starbucks in the US will start to offer new Protein Blended Cold Brews in either Almond or Cacao flavors. These drinks are non-dairy, gluten-free, and vegan-friendly. Plus, you get between 10 and 12 grams of protein per Grande cup!
For the Almond Blended Cold Brew, Starbucks mixes their cold-brew coffee with almond milk, plant-based proteins, almond butter, and a banana/date fruit mix blend. Toss it in a blender with some ice, and voila! Breakfast smoothie of champions.
Can’t go without your chocolate fix? There’s also a Cacao Blended Cold Brew that mixes cold-brew coffee with coconut milk, plant-based protein, cacao powder, more banana/date fruit blend, and ice.
You get 12 grams of protein with the Almond Brew, and 10 grams with the Cacao. Both clock in and a reasonable 270 calories. Augment with a muffin and it’s the perfect on-the-go breakfast.
It wouldn’t be Starbucks without a bunch of customizable options. Prefer bananas to dates? Swap out the banana/date mix for a whole fresh banana. Almond butter and cacao levels can also be tailored to personal preference, as can the amount of plant-based protein in case you’re on a bulking run. Add an extra shot of Starbucks Espresso for some extra coffee flavor, or keep the coffee without the caffeine by switching to decaf.
