Unbeknownst to many, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shannen Doherty are best friends. The two actresses met in the 1990s through their Warner Bros. TV shows — Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed — and still keep in touch every day.

Gellar, 42, told PEOPLE that Doherty, 49, has been a constant yet socially distanced companion during the coronavirus pandemic, teaching her recipes and supporting her as a mom stuck at home with her kids. "She's amazing," Gellar says. "My husband [Freddie Prinze Jr.] always says that you always learn better from your friends than your spouse.”

“He's this amazing chef but I never learned from him, because I get so nervous and frustrated and he gets frustrated with me. I've learned so many recipes from Shannen during quarantine because she's much more patient with me in the kitchen," she added.

Doherty is currently battling breast cancer again. After going into remission, the cancer returned and metastasized last year spreading beyond her breast and lymph nodes. She is currently undergoing hormone therapy to block the estrogen feeding her cancer and drug treatment to target metastatic disease.

Meanwhile, Gellar is currently helping her kids with their schoolwork, admitting that remote learning for her daughter Charlotte Grace, 11, and son Rocky James, 8, has been "really difficult" since she needs to be “a parent, referee, principal and teacher.” She adds that “it's one thing to understand a concept, it's another thing to be able to teach a concept."

Earlier this month, Gellar was a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show where she revealed that her kids have been watching Buffy during quarantine for the first time. She also joked that she's "the world's biggest disappointment" since she doesn't remember many things about filming the show.

"They’ll always ask questions and I’ll be like ‘I don’t remember I’ll have to text someone and ask,'" she said. "They think they know it better than I do at this point." Luckily, one bright spot is that her son actually thinks she’s cool now.
