The most important decision you are ever going to make with your life may be who you decide to marry. Choose wrongly, and you are certain to make sure that even your best moments are going to be weighed down by the anchor that your wedding ring has become. It's a decision that carries with it an immense amount of pressure for everyone. But now imagine that your relationship has been covered by the tabloid media for the entire duration. And perhaps you can start to understand why that walk down the aisle for some celebrities feels like it's never going to end.
John Cena and Nikki Bella are two of the most iconic superstars to ever appear in a WWE ring. Not to mention his recent film, Blockers, is being called one of the best comedies of the year. They capped off their high-profile relationship with an engagement in literally the most public way possible, as he proposed in the middle of the ring at Wrestlemania. But John's tapped out of the relationship with only weeks to go before their destination wedding. And if the sources which are covered below are to be believed, did so in a way that definitely does not coincide with the public image he works so hard to portray.
But Cena and Bella aren't the first, nor will they be the last, celebrities to have their relationship come to a halt before the big day. In fact, in Kat Von D's case, it happened to her twice.
Whether these are some of the more recent relationships in Hollywood or some that you may not have even known dated, such as Katie Holmes and Chris Klein or Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland, these are the 15 celebrities that said no to the dress.
15 Kat Von D and Jesse James
Jesse James' relationship with Sandra Bullock did not end on very good terms. Things didn't improve with the next high-profile relationship of his, this time with Kat Von D.
After their engagement ended, Kat Von D took to social media to let the world know that 19 different women had come to her and said that they had been active with James. When talking about their relationship, Von D explained,
"There was a time when I was confident and excited at proving the world wrong, because I believed so deeply in people's ability to change for the better. Although this was not a primary purpose in the relationship, I did feel like it would be a positive thing for those who judged Jesse solely based on what they read in tabloids, to see that change is always possible — even in the people who seem hopeless."
Well, that mission sure failed!
14 Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling
Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling helped portray one of the best love stories in film history with The Notebook. Their passion on the screen translated away from it to a relationship and subsequent engagement, with Ryan describing their real love as being significantly more romantic than the movie.
But when talking about the reaction that fans had towards their split in an interview with GQ, Gosling revealed,
“Women are mad at me. A girl came up to me on the street and she almost smacked me. Like, ‘How could you? How could you let a girl like that go?'
He continued with, "I feel like I want to give people hugs, they seem so sad. Rachel and I should be the ones getting hugs! Instead, we’re consoling everybody else.” We're sure that fan made him feel great about himself.
13 Kesha Nichols and Richard Jefferson
Kesha Nichols and Richard Jefferson were once engaged, but broke it off, only for the NBA superstar being able to win her back again. But with the actual wedding only days away, Jefferson got cold feet and called things off. The two had fought on a trip away and after taking some space, he decided to email her and confirm that their fight had ended their relationship.
Nichols ended up using the wedding day as a celebration of life party, which you have to admit is a pretty good way to "save the day". Nichols talked about the split with Good Morning America after saying, "I have no hard feelings. I will always care about him. ... My heart is broken. I'll miss him as a friend."
12 Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck
One of the worst movies of all-time is the 2002 disaster Gigli. But at the very least, the movie did lead to Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck getting together which for a while, was very nice (especially for tabloid media!).
But their engagement came crashing down, leading Lopez to describe the feeling in her memoir True Love as,
"It felt like my heart had been torn out of my chest," She also spoke about the months of planning that had gone into that potential walk down the aisle.
Not helping things was Affleck then going on to start a high-profile relationship with Jennifer Garner. At least things are looking up for her in her personal life at the moment as she is currently in a very serious relationship with the MLB legend, Alex Rodriguez. (Source: DailyMail)
11 Tara Reid and Carson Daly
Tara Reid has far too many photos of her engaging in behavior that definitely shows her "forgetting her limit".
Which means that at least her party girl reputation is at least well earned. But Reid thinks her entire life would have been different if she had managed to turn the engagement that she had with Carson Daly, into the family she had hoped.
"I think, ‘Well yeah, if I would have married Carson, I'd probably have kids by now... I wouldn't have had all that crazy partying. My life would have been completely different. But, you know what? If that was meant to happen, it would have... but I've never loved anyone the way I loved him," said Reid in an interview.
10 Perri Edwards and Zayn Malik
Zayn Malik is recently in the news for his split from the talented model, Gigi Hadid. But he was also previously engaged to the musician, Perri Edwards. Despite a serious relationship, you may not believe how Malik elected to end things with her.
"It was horrible, the worst time in my life. A four-year relationship, two-year engagement ended by a simple text message," said Edwards.
She continued with, "Just like that. Even though things in my career were going really well, it was incredibly difficult for me....I didn't want to be alone because when I was, I'd start thinking about things and get upset."
Yikes, it's one thing to end the relationship, but it's a whole new level of cold to do it over a text message. (Source: People)
9 Janine Turner and Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin has had some public problems in the past. Something that seemingly was also part of his engagement to the actress, Janine Turner. After the two had split up, Turner realized that she had a drinking problem that probably wasn't helped by Alec.
When discussing just how close she was to tying the knot in an interview with Oprah: Where are They Now? Turner explained,
"We had the dress, the invitations, the church, everything. And then we called it off. Mutually called it off," Turner also went on to explain the aftermath, "I loved Alec very much, so it was devastating. [But] we both just knew that it was wrong... It wasn’t healthy. And I knew I didn’t want to live that way in my life.”
8 Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland
For some celebrities, the bump up from B to A-List status can be a positive thing and help them grow stronger. But Kiefer Sutherland mentioned in an interview with People magazine that it was Julia Roberts' bump to fame that didn't help.
"We had decided we wanted to get married, but then this other thing kind of took over. She was arguably the most famous woman in the world, and this wedding that was supposed to be something between the two of us became something so big."
The two had met while working together on Flatliners in 1990 and were hoping to get married in Summer 1991. While their career both ended up taking off eventually, we're sure Sutherland having to watch Roberts' career continue to excel from the role of an ex-fiance wasn't too fun.
7 Rachel Hunter And Jarret Stoll
In some of these examples, we have quotes from the stars that help paint a picture as to why their relationship ended. But when the talented NHLer Jarret Stoll (then 27 years old), ended things only months before the wedding to the model, Rachel Hunter (who was 39), no reason was allegedly given to her.
Instead, Stoll emailed the guest list and moved on with his life. Leaving a source for Hunter to state,
"She's been trying to put a brave face on things. Rachel is doing her best to be chipper, but the reality is she's been poleaxed by this. She's confused and hurting."
Speculation as to why also points to Hunter's high-maintenance nature such as her decision to allegedly change the wedding venue 7 different times. Hunter has two children who at the time were 17 and 14 that was fathered by her ex-husband, Rod Stewart. Stoll is currently engaged to Erin Andrews. (Source: DailyMail)
6 Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez
One of the most iconic movies of the '80s was St.Elmo's Fire which starred Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez. Things definitely also heated up off the set for the two of them and they started dating shortly after, spending 1985-1987 engaged.
Moore has been in a relationship with Sean Friday since 2013, but that didn't stop tabloids from running rumors in 2015 that Emilio wanted her back,
“Emilio was happiest when they were engaged from 1985 to 1987. He thinks he blew it then and wants to prove that he can be a great husband now!" said a source to The Enquirer. The fact that Emilio is currently single also probably doesn't make him any less interested in Demi. Perhaps he just has to wait for Sean and Demi to call it quits.
5 Evan Rachel Wood and Marilyn Manson
Evan Rachel Wood definitely raised some eyebrows when she started her relationship with Marilyn Manson. On top of having a huge gap, her being 19 and him 36, Manson had also only recently separated from his wife, Dita Von Tease.
When talking about the relationship with Net-a-Porter.com, Wood stated,
"I wanted to break a mold for sure – I knew I was edgier, more alternative, and weird. And he was just what I needed, because I felt really free with him. And that freedom was attractive."
The two dated for 4 years but called it off (as well as their engagement) for good in 2010. While Wood has been married (and divorced) since then, she is currently engaged again this time with the musician, Zach Villa.
4 Katie Holmes and Chris Klein
Chris Klein had the chance to become a huge movie star if he had been able to capitalize on the success of American Pie. Katie Holmes did become a huge movie star because she was able to turn Dawson's Creek into the start of bigger and better things.
But there was a time when the two of them were set to marry. Klein talked about the end of their relationship that started in 2000 and lasted until 2005 with Marlow Stern and TheDailyBeast,
"Hollywood was ending. [Holmes’s] huge television show was ending. Life was changing and that adventure ended. It was a transitional period. So I was 25-years-old trying to find my voice, since my teenage one was played out.”
3 Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt
When you think Brad Pitt's relationship history, your mind is probably going to start thinking about him and Jolie. Or perhaps a little more old-school and you'll think of him and Jen. But if you dig even deeper, you'll start thinking about his engagement to Gwyneth Paltrow.
Which, to his credit, Paltrow admitted in an interview with Girlboss Radio that she was the one who messed things up,
"I'm actually a pretty good friend and a good sister and a daughter and a mother, but I am at my potentially most vulnerable…in the romantic slice of the pie. So it's taken me a lot of work to get to the place where I have a good romantic relationship."
When talking specifically about the problems with their relationship, Paltrow also talked about her age, "I honestly do think I was too young and I didn't know what I was doing. I mean, I was 22 when we met. You can't make a decision when you're 22 years old."
2 Kat Von D and Deadmau5
Kat Von D was definitely feeling down after her engagement ended with Jesse James in a very public way (as we talked about above). But she'd probably agree that she rushed things too fast with her subsequent relationship with Deadmau5 that also saw him getting down on one knee, only to run before the dress got a chance to be worn.
Like with James, Kat Von D decided to use social media to talk about her relationship problems saying, "Man, I sure was wrong. But at least he made it a no-brainer to break that off. #lessonlearned"
Many inferred that to mean Deadmau5 was not a good person, and that he was going around behind her back and doing things he should not do, which he denied. Thankfully the 3rd time was the charm for Kat Von D and she's currently married to Rafael Reyes. (Source: DailyMail)
1 Nikki Bella and John Cena
John Cena and Nikki Bella were considered to be one of the strongest power couples in the world. And considering his emergence in Hollywood is just around the corner, you can imagine that status was only going to grow.
They had been engaged since April 2017, but with the wedding only weeks away, the two have gone their separate ways.
An inside source for PEOPLE definitely seems to indicate that this is John's decision,
“She never gave him an ultimatum. He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her. But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been — which is someone who puts himself first, always."
As well as this, it was also stated by the inside that, "He’s an incredibly dedicated, driven, ambitious guy. And for the longest time he said he didn’t think he had room in his life for a spouse or kids. It seems like in the end that was still the truth." If Cena knew he never wanted a family, and Nikki knew she did, this relationship should have never gotten off the ground.
