Ryan Murphy’s next project for Netflix will be Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a limited series co-created by Murphy and his longtime partner Ian Brennan. The series will be told from the perspective of the serial killer’s victims.

Although the role of Dahmer has not yet been cast, Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins will play Dahmer's father, a chemist who showed his son how to bleach and preserve animal bones. Casting is also underway for the role of Glenda Cleveland, a neighbor who reported Dahmer's odd behavior to law enforcement on several occasions.

Meanwhile, Carl Franklin will direct the premiere episode, and Janet Mock will write and direct multiple episodes, with both also executive producing. Franklin is known for directing four episodes of Mindhunter, while Mock is a writer, director, and producer on Pose.

The series is expected to delve into the ten times Dahmer was nearly caught but let go. The Milwaukee serial killer murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys from 1978 to 1991. Diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and a psychotic disorder, he was nonetheless found to be legally sane at his trial.

Dahmer, who admitted to all his murders, was tried for 15 counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole. On November 28, 1994, he was beaten to death by Christopher Scarver, a fellow inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin. Scarver, a convicted murderer, was sentenced to two further life sentences for killing Dahmer and another inmate, Jesse Anderson.

Dahmer has been the subject of several films, including The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer, which was released in 1993; Dahmer, which was released in 2002 and starred Jeremy Renner in the title role; Raising Jeffrey Dahmer, which was released in 2006; and My Friend Dahmer, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017 and starred Ross Lynch as a young Dahmer.
