Ewan McGregor will once again step into the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a yet-untitled series on Disney Plus. During a recent Zoom interview on The Graham Norton Show, the Scottish actor revealed that the new series is set to begin filming in March of 2021.

“It’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi story, I suppose. It’s not all me, but it certainly will be a lot of me, which is good,” McGregor said. “We start shooting it in March next year.”

The series was originally announced in August 2019, but shooting was delayed after writer Hossein Amini left the project in January. Amini was replaced by Joby Harold, while Deborah Chow, who directed The Mandalorian, will be the showrunner.

McGregor has expressed his admiration for Alec Guinness, who originated the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy. The British actor, who died in 2000, appeared in nine films featured in the BFI's 100 Greatest British Films of the 20th Century.

“The fun thing about doing that in the first place when I was much younger was trying to imagine Alec Guinness, how would he play these scenes as a younger guy?” McGregor said. “It led me to watch some of his earlier work, which I had never seen before. Brilliant movies, wonderful films that he’d been in, and I had such a great time studying him in those movies.”

In the original trilogy, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a mentor to Luke Skywalker, teaching him the ways of the Jedi. After he sacrifices himself in a duel against Darth Vader, the Jedi Master counsels Luke in his fight against the Galactic Empire. In the prequel trilogy, Obi-Wan Kenobi is an apprentice to Jedi Master Qui-Gon-Jinn and later a mentor to Anakin, who turns to the dark side of the Force and becomes Darth Vader.

McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, reprised the role in voiceovers for 2015’s The Force Awakens and 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
