Numerous CBS Studios shows, including NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Seal Team, Why Women Kill and Diary of a Future President, have decided to extend their production hiatus until January 11 in light of the COVID-19 surge in Los Angeles County.

CBS Studios is so far the only major studio to delay production amid the pandemic, which has progressively worsened in California. On Monday, Los Angeles County recorded 13,661 new cases and 73 deaths. In total, the state registered a new high of 66,811 COVID-19 cases at the beginning of the week.

Meanwhile, Netflix, NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Television Group have not made any decisions regarding production delays. CBS Studios made the decision after the county emailed industry heads suggesting a delay in production given the “catastrophic surge” in COVID-19 cases, stating that production travel is “currently not advised.”

“Although music, TV and film productions are allowed to operate, we ask you to strongly consider pausing work for a few weeks during this catastrophic surge in COVID cases,” wrote public health department representatives. “Identify and delay higher risk activities, and focus on lower-risk work for now, if at all possible.”

Despite attempts by television studios to implement safety measures, a number of productions have reported COVID-19 cases in November and December. On the set of Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, several crew members who tested positive for COVID-19 protested producers claims that there was no evidence of transmission at work, despite recording nearly 20 positive cases.

Other productions that have reported COVID-19 cases include Why Women Kill, Call Your Mother, Mr. Mayor, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Colin in Black & White, Impeachment: American Crime Story, Young Sheldon, The Kominsky Method and Lucifer.

So far, there have been 19,977,704 confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States and 346,579 deaths. There are currently nearly 8,000,000 active cases across the country. Two proven COVID-19 vaccines are now being administered across the US. Nearly 2 million people have already received the first of two doses of these vaccines, and officials hope to immunize one-third of the US population by the end of March 2021.
