There is a certain level of responsibility that comes with being famous. Celebrities need to be aware that what they choose to believe and share with the world can carry some serious ramifications.
But just because someone knows how to sing a high note or amaze you with their acting talents doesn't mean you should be trusting them when it comes to health advice. And just because Dr. Oz has Dr. at the start of his name, it does not mean that the health tips he passes out your way are all that healthy.
You're going to love reading about these bizarre, and at times, dangerous recommendations that have been given out by celebrities. Just make sure you don't go and try this stuff at home. And if you do, at least you've been warned!
15 Alicia Silverstone Pre-Chewed Her Son's Food
When talking to PEOPLE, Silverstone admitted to chewing the food in her mouth first and then passing it straight to the mouth of her son. She defended her actions saying,
“People have been feeding their kids that way for thousands of years. It’s a weaning process. I think it’s adorable and I laugh every time he does it,"
But it's definitely still a bit bizarre! Now if we're being fair, Alicia Silverstone may not have been promoting this as a 'tip' per say, but she sure made headlines back in 2012 with her unconventional eating style with her 10-month-old son.
14 Gwenyth Paltrow's Site Claims Wearing Support Causes Issues
Gwenyth Paltrow's website Goop.com has often been at the source of controversy for the unusual, and at times, harmful tips that are posted on the website. Back in 2015, the website earned the frustration from medical professionals when they published an article insinuating that there could be a link between a woman wearing certain garments with underwire, and developing diseases.
Jennifer Gunter, a practicing OB-GYN, hit back at the piece saying,
'This stuff scares women. When people have it they desperately reap their past to try and come up with things they may have done, and so this kind of misinformation could cause women to stress and lose sleep and that is definitely bad for your health, nevermind being cruel."
13 Mariah Carey Loses Baby Weight With Only Purple Food
Elouise Bauskis, who works as a nutritional Therapist, stated,
"Nutritionally, it is recommended to consume a rainbow of color daily, through a variety of vegetables and fruits. Focusing only on purple foods is not recommended."
Some of the best foods in the world for your body just happen to be purple. Blueberries? Aw yeah. Plums? You better believe it. Even purple carrots are great for you if you can track them down. But just because Mariah Carey said she only ate purple foods, 3 days a week, to lose the baby weight; doesn't mean you should too.
12 Salma Hayek Puts Egg Yolk In Her Hair
Salma Hayek is one of the most desired women in Hollywood. One of her features that stands out the most may be her gorgeous hair. Though when you read about what she does to help maintain that great look, you may find yourself wondering if it’s worth it!
“Are you ready for this? - egg yolk. One thing you can do to take away some of the stench is to take the skin of the egg yolk out, and put a couple of drops of lemon, but it's still going to stink,” said Hayek.
Something tells us her Husband doesn’t mind putting up with the smell!
11 The Kardashians Love Waist Trainers
Working out with a waist trainer does not have health benefits stated MD, Daniel Maman,
"External compression via a waist trainer has absolutely zero permanent effect on fat distribution, intra-abdominal organ positioning, or body contouring,"
Millions of people are going to be following every move that the Kardashian family makes. Which may explain why the family feels the pressure to always be looking their best.
But the above photo, which was posted to Instagram along with a link to the product online (product placement much?) may have been a quick buck for the family, but was seriously dangerous.
10 Jennifer Lopez Sniffs Grapefruit Oil
One of the best ways to improve your diet is to make sure you are able to control yourself when a craving comes along. That doesn’t mean completely depriving your body of the treats you do enjoy, it just means making sure you are being smart with your decision making.
But if you find yourself needing to suppress your appetite, we don’t know if you’ve ever thought of using the quirky technique employed by Jennifer Lopez.
It was reported by Dr. Oz that Jennifer Lopez would often find herself carrying around a bottle of grapefruit oil with the hopes that it would curb those cravings.
Lopez is clearly in amazing shape, but we don’t know how much credit can be given to this trick!
9 Dr. Oz Wants You To Brush Your Teeth With Baking Soda And Strawberries
Who doesn't love going to the grocery store and picking up some fresh strawberries? But you may also be baffled by the suggestion from Dr. Oz that you should combine those strawberries with baking soda to create a DIY teeth-whitening paste. At the very least, dentists were confused and that should be enough to make you have some hesitation!
Further studies done using this product showed that not only does the substance not whiten your teeth when tested, but also can cause damage to your teeth if used for too long of a period of time. Talk about a lose-lose situation to get yourself in unnecessarily.
8 Blake Lively Uses Mayonnaise In The Shower
Blake Lively has the ability to consult some of the best minds in the fashion business. But when it comes to this next quirky tip, it’s advice from her dear old Mom that has managed to stand the test of time.
“My mom taught me this really great beauty tip. She used to put oil or mayonnaise on the bottom half of her hair before she would shower. That way, when she would shampoo, the soap wouldn't strip the bottom of the hair and dry it out, making it brittle,” admitted Lively.
While we’re sure her husband, Ryan Reynolds, gave her a strange look when she did it for the first time - it’s hard to argue with the results!
7 Shailene Woodley Thinks You Should Eat Clay (You Shouldn't)
Shailene Woodley just wanted to try and give her fans some helpful advice when she told David Letterman that she would eat a teaspoon of clay a day. She believed it helped clear her body of heavy metals and toxins.
Only thing, is that there is no need for humans to eat clay.
And especially not for something that Dr. David L. Katz stated, "Removing metal from the body is not necessarily good -- iron, for example, is a metal and essential to health. So, there could conceivably be benefits, but there could certainly be harms -- and a favorable benefit/harm ratio has not been established to justify recommending this."
6 Katy Perry Bragged About 25+ Pills a Day
Katy Perry has hundreds of millions of fans who look to her for advice and seemingly follow her every piece of that advice. Which makes it all the more damaging when she chooses to use her platform to promote something that is unhealthy. Such as, y'know, seemingly bragging about the fact that she was consuming over 20 vitamin pills a day.
Perry tweeted a photo out back in 2013 along with the caption,' "I'm all about that supplement & vitamin LYFE!"
If there's any positive here, it's that at least the average fan wouldn't be able to afford that expensive of a regimen. I mean, really, at least she's taking vitamin pills instead of something else. It could be way, way worse.
5 Victoria and David Beckham Exfoliate With Help of a Nightingale
Victoria and David Beckham have both made a name for themselves in the modeling industry as names that should be respected. Even if they have had some pretty awful fashion fails in the past. But we don't know if any outfit they've worn has been as head-scratching as the beauty advice that they seem to swear by.
Using bird droppings to give you that glowing skin! It doesn't mean going out and standing in the park, but instead going to your local spa. If you're "lucky" they'll be able to utilize a technique that includes using the droppings from nightingales with rice bran and water; which is then turned into a face mask to exfoliate your skin.
4 Kourtney Kardashian Drinks Apple Cider Vinegar
Kourtney Kardashian would be disappointed to hear that the actual long-term effects of drinking apple cider vinegar may damage your teeth. Which as a member of the Kardashian clan, Kourtney may want to be aware of because her photo is going to continue to be taken throughout her life.
Despite that, Kardashian still advocated drinking the liquid, saying in an interview that she has a spoonful of it before her dinners. But before you hate Kourtney too hard, perhaps the fact that Megan Fox also recommends this habit may make you have more confidence in it (though you still shouldn't do it!).
3 Teri Hatcher Baths In Red Wine
There is no question that Teri Hatcher has incredibly beautiful skin. Something that as she continues to get older (she’s currently 53), she’ll logically continue to prioritize. One of the best ways that Hatcher has found to keep herself looking her best is to utilize some red wine.
And while she may love drinking it (as may you), she actually utilizes it in her bathing routine. In the book The Black Book of Hollywood Beauty Secrets, it was divulged that Hatcher will pour roughly one cup of red wine prior to having a bath; with the belief that the polyphenols that come from the wine will help her skin.
2 Snookie Turns To Cat Litter For Beauty Help
Snookie is one of the most memorable reality stars of all-time for her role on the series Jersey Shore. But we don’t know if anyone out there would honestly be able to say that Snookie is someone they would use as a role model.
This is something that can be said not only about the behavior she exhibited on a regular basis but also on her unusual beauty regimen. It was revealed on the Conan O’Brien show that Snookie would exfoliate her skin using cat litter.
It doesn’t matter how good the results are, that’s definitely an answer that is going to turn heads!
1 Gwyneth Paltrow Gets Stung By Bees
Gwyneth Paltrow has pushed some seriously harmful ideas in the past when it comes to how you should treat your body. But our next entry isn’t so much dangerous and unhealthy as it is plain weird.
When talking about how she helped reduce scarring and inflammation, Paltrow revealed,
“I’ve been stung by bees. It's a thousands of years old treatment called apitherapy. People use it to get rid of inflammation and scarring. It's actually pretty incredible if you research it."
Something tells us the average person probably isn’t going to their local beehive for treatment! Also, this is something that probably really hurts, so I don't think people are lining up to do something like this. It's just one of those weird Hollywood things that she will probably stick to, and that is fine by us. Have fun!
