Jim Carrey has been tapped to take on the role of the Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden Jr. on Saturday Night Live. On Wednesday, NBC announced that the actor will play Biden on the coming 46th season of SNL, which debuts on October 3.

Carrey has hosted SNL numerous times, though he has never played the former Vice President. In the past, Jason Sudeikis, Woody Harrelson and John Mulaney have impersonated Biden on the sketch comedy show. Carrey will be joining SNL veteran Alec Baldwin, who has been playing Donald Trump since 2016.

NBC is expected to air five new episodes of SNL from October 3 through October 31. Both Carrey and Baldwin are expected to make several appearances on the show before the presidential election on November 3. So far, no hosts or musical guests have been announced for the first shows of the season.

SNL will return to live television for the first time since production shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The show ended last season with several virtual episodes. In a press release, NBC said that it expects to allow “a limited in-studio audience at Rockefeller Center” for the new season. SNL is planning on working closely with state officials to adhere to safety protocols.

SNL has announced that three new featured performers have been added to the cast: Lauren Holt, an Upright Citizens Brigade performer from Los Angeles; Punkie Johnson, who has appeared on Space Force and Corporate; and Andrew Dismukes, a staff writer on SNL.

NBC also said that SNL will be working with comedy training programs at the PIT, Second City, the Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade to offer “a scholarship program for students of diverse backgrounds to advance their comedy careers.”

Carrey, who got his start as an actor on the sketch comedy show In Living Color, recently starred in the Showtime series Kidding with Frank Langella, Judy Greer, Cole Allen, Juliet Morris, and Catherine Keener. The series was canceled after two seasons in July.
