On Monday, Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges announced Monday that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma. “As the Dude would say ... New S**T has come to light,” the 70-year-old actor tweeted, referring to his character in The Big Lebowski. “I have been diagnosed with Lymphoma. “Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good.”

According to the American Cancer Society, lymphoma is a cancer that begins in cells in the body's immune system, which includes the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland, and bone marrow. The main types of lymphoma are Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Treatment can involve chemotherapy, medication, radiation therapy, or stem-cell transplant.

In his tweet, Bridges thanked fans for their “prayers and wishes” and said he was “grateful for his friends and family.” He also added, “While I have you, please remember to go vote. Because we are all in this together. Vote.org.” Although the actor has not endorsed either candidate, he has supported Democrats in the past.

Bridges, second son of the late actor Lloyd Bridges, made his film debut when he was almost two years old in The Company She Keeps in 1951. He has been nominated for an Academy Award seven times and won in 2010 for his role as an alcoholic country singer in Crazy Heart. Some of his most famous roles have been in The Last Picture Show, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Starman, The Fabulous Baker Boys. The Fisher King, True Grit, The Giver, and Hell or High Water.

In response to his announcement, numerous fans have quoted The Big Lebowski with messages like “This aggression will not stand, man.” Longtime New York Times film critic Janet Maslin tweeted that Bridges “made the world a better place ... thanks for being the beautiful guy you are and lighting up our screens since you were a baby.”
