Many regular women complain that the fashion modeling industry sets an unfair expectation regarding the standard of beauty for females. This standard is unattainable, except for the rare beauties that literally starve themselves in order to maintain an ultra-low weight.
Like all stereotypes, there may be a kernel of truth mixed in with outrageous and ridiculous assumptions that do not take into account that every person is different and their body type may be a representation of that simple fact.
Gigi Hadid responded to some Twitter trolls calling her “too skinny.” The trolls say that she looked better when she first started her modeling career. To those detractors, Gigi stated that when she first started modeling, at age 17, she had not yet been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease. According to Hadid this was a time when many said that she was “too big for the industry.” First, she was too big. Now, she is too skinny. Go figure.
For those of you so determined to come up w why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed w/Hashimoto’s disease; those of u who called me “too big for the industry” were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) February 11, 2018
Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc ... I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) February 11, 2018
Although stress & excessive travel can also affect the body, I have always eaten the same, my body just handles it differently now that my health is better. I may be “too skinny” for u, honestly this skinny isn’t what I want to be, but I feel healthier internally and (cont)— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) February 11, 2018
(cont) am still learning and growing with my body everyday, as everyone is.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) February 11, 2018
I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesnt suit ur “beauty” expectation, shouldnt have to. Not to judge others, but drugs are not my thing, stop putting me in that box just because u dont understand the way my body has matured.— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) February 11, 2018
Hashimoto’s disease comes from a problem when a person’s immune system wrongly attacks their thyroid gland. The thyroid gland makes many important hormones that control the proper functions of the body. With this disease, the thyroid activity decreases. This causes some inflammation and water retention. It can easily make a person gain weight from the water that the body holds in unnecessarily. A person also gets tired and physical activity is reduced because of the fatigue.
Once Hadid received treatment for Hashimoto’s disease, using hormone replacement therapies, her body naturally healed. After that, she lost a considerable amount of weight until her body stabilized. Hadid says that stress and excessive traveling around the world can change how her body metabolizes food. However, her diet remains the same as it always has been, which is a very healthy style that she is comfortable eating.
Although some may have an opinion that she is skinny; she feels better than ever and is in superb health. For those that claim her thin physique comes from drug use, specifically cocaine, she says that drugs are not her thing.
Hadid requested what makes the most common sense when she said on Twitter, “Please, as social media users & human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those u don’t.”
