On an upcoming episode of KCRW's The Business, George Clooney states that the Trump family name "will now forever be associated with insurrection" in light of the assault on the Capitol building in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
Clooney called out the pro-Trump supporters at the scene, telling podcast host Kim Masters, "It's devastating to watch the people's house being desecrated in that way." The actor and director added that everyone was waiting to see what would be the straw that broke the camel's back.
The actor also stated, "This puts Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr. Ivanka, all of them, into the dustbin of history," and noted that former White House Chief of Staff General Kelly called for the president’s removal by invoking the 25th Amendment. "This is a big, big difference," Clooney said. "If this is what it takes to set us on the right path, I think that, not that it's worth it, it's not worth it in any shape or form, but at least we should find something hopeful to come out of some of this disaster."
On Wednesday, as the events were unfolding on Capitol Hill, Hollywood stars like Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman, Josh Gad and Cynthia Nixon called for action to be taken on social media. Facebook, Twitter and Twitch responded by temporarily blocking Trump’s accounts in the wake of the attack.
On Thursday, former First Lady Michelle Obama released a statement, in which she stated, "Now is the time for those who voted for this president to see the reality of what they’ve supported — and publicly and forcefully rebuke him and the actions of that mob."
Only 52 people have been arrested so far following the assault on the Capitol, which interrupted Congress certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win. The number pales in comparison to the number of arrests made in Washington last summer during protests for racial justice after George Floyd was murdered by police. Between May 30 and June 2 2020, the height of the racial justice protests, 427 "unrest-related" arrests were made in D.C., including 24 juveniles, the police department says.
