Here are some surefire ways to tell if you have a slower metabolism than normal and ways in which you can go about improving it.
Working out and exercising more yet not seeing the desired results can be an extremely frustrating process. Now don't get us wrong, we're not talking about popping to the gym for an hour and being annoyed that we haven't come home with a six-pack. We mean consistently putting the work in and not getting in shape, at least not as quickly as others around us.
When that happens, many of us are quick to throw out the metabolism excuse. That we aren't losing weight because our body has a slow metabolism. Or someone not having to work out as much to look good only having that luxury because they have a fast metabolism. All of that being said, can you actually tell us what the word metabolism means and what it is?
Dr. Arad of the Mount Sinai Physiolab told POPSUGAR that "metabolism is a complex process that relates to your body's ability to produce energy from fat, sugar, protein, and how it stores energy." So if you have a fast metabolism your body is able to burn calories faster and uses energy more efficiently.
However, having a slow metabolism is not as common as you might think. As well as not being able to burn calories as efficiently as others, there are also other signs to look out for. Physical signs such as brittle nails, dry skin, and even losing your hair. You'll also be fatigued a lot of the time and find it challenging to even complete the most simple of tasks as your body isn't creating enough energy for you to do so.
If you have read all of the above and still believe you are suffering from a slow metabolism, or are now convinced that you are, there are ways in which you can improve it. First off, eat less sugar. Replace it with protein and healthy fats. Strength training is also key, so perhaps switch out some of the cardio your metabolism is making too difficult for you anyway with a little weight lifting. Most importantly, don't panic. Your metabolism can be altered and improved with a couple of lifestyle tweaks as you can see.
