Chris Pine, who will soon debut Wonder Woman 1984, has been tapped to play the lead in a new Dungeons & Dragons adaptation from Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The film will be released by Paramount and eOne.

Goldstein and Daley, who have written the latest version of the script, which is based on a draft by Michael Gilio, will be the second team to adapt the popular fantasy role-playing game. The game, which is owned by Hasbro, was previously brought to the screen by New Line in 2000 and starred Jeremy Irons. The film was both a box office and critical failure, earning back only $33,807,409 of its $45 million budget.

If Pine is expected to take over Irons’ role, he would be playing an evil mage named Profion, who rules over the the capital of the Empire of Izmir, Sumdall, where he creates a magical sceptre that allows him to control Gold dragons. The original Dungeons & Dragons game, a fantasy tabletop role-playing game designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc.

The tabletop game famously uses multisided dice and is overseen by the Dungeon Master, who acts as the game's referee and storyteller, deciding the setting of the adventures. In 2015, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the game and planned on making a film with Ansel Elgort as the star. Eventually that project was scrapped, and Paramount, which has a production and distribution deal with Hasbro, bought the rights to the adaptation of the game.

Pine is currently in production on Olivia Wilde's 1950s thriller Don't Worry Darling, which is being made by New Line. The actor last voiced the character of Peter Parker/Spiderman in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018. He is set to appear in the forthcoming Violence of Action, an action film by director Tarik Saleh co-starring Ben Foster and Gillian Jacobs. Pine plays a former marine who travels to Poland with an elite paramilitary team on a black ops mission to investigate a mysterious threat.
