Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss: Debunking The Myth

The latest diet trend involves drinking small amounts of apple cider vinegar diluted in water, but does it actually work?

When it comes to dieting there's an almost endless list of avenues that you can take. Some people juice, others fast, you can cut out carbohydrates, stop drinking alcohol, the possibilities go on and on. When it comes to fads and trends, the diet business changes almost as much as the fashion industry. If you're looking to lose weight it can be hard to keep up.

You may have heard of the latest trend in the dieting world, drinking apple cider vinegar. Sounds disgusting, right? Well, as any of you who have dieted in the past probably know, the process is rarely an enjoyable one. Apple cider vinegar has a lot of perceived uses. Some believe it can clear up your acne, get rid of dandruff, or even soothe sunburn. None of those require you actually drinking the stuff though.

If you want to use it to cut weight though, you will obviously have to drink it. According to Men's Health, many people have been mixing two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with water and drinking the rather repulsive sounding cocktail to help them lose weight. The more hardcore ACV drinkers actually take it in shot form, but does it actually aid your diet?

The short answer? Maybe. Associate director of Arizona University's nutrition program, Carol Johnston explained that ACV activates your metabolism, causing your body to use up fat for energy. It can also slow down the digestion of starchy food which would lead to you feeling fuller for longer and hence lessening your appetite. Her studies show that the weight loss caused by ACV is minimal though, perhaps one or two pounds over the course of twelve weeks.

There you have it. Apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight but you are probably better off not relying on that alone. If you drink ACV each and every day but you don't change other aspects of your diet or your exercise routine well, don't get your hopes up that you will start to shed weight. Research suggests that it aids weight loss, but it probably isn't worth making it the focal point of your diet.
