Legendary host of Jeopardy! Alex Trebek recently let his fans know that, rest assured, he isn't leaving his place at the podium anytime soon. The most famous game show host of all time! Oops, sorry. Rephrase... who is the most famous game show host of all time? The answer to that question might actually be relative but it's pretty safe to say that most people would conjure up an image of the famous silver fox, 78-year-old Alex Trebek when they hear the words "famous game show host."Mr. Trebek has been dishing out Daily Doubles and introducing returning champs for 35 years now on "Jeopardy!", America's much beloved trivia show. Recently, a crop of rumors have seen the light of day that suggest that Trebek might be stepping down from his coveted career. But Trebek told People in an exclusive interview that rumors concerning him retiring from his long-standing position have been around for years and he’s not exactly sure why. He hasn’t given any indication that he’s ready to step down from his role as the host of one of the longest running game shows in TV history.
It's interesting to note that Trebek hasn't always been with the show. Given his strong association with the show, it seems strange to think of anyone else but Trebek asking contestants how much they wagered for Final Jeopardy but in fact, Art Fleming hosted the show from its original daytime start in 1964 to 1975 then again from 1978 to 1979 for the we nighttime revival of The All-New Jeopardy! Trebek took over on September 10, 1984 when the show that we all know and love today began its syndicated run.
Trebek told People that he plans to stay until his current contract expires which is up in 2022. For those hardcore fans of the show, don’t worry. The host went to explain that he plans to stay at least through 2022, leading many to believe that he’ll stay around and renew yet another contract.
"People have been wondering if I was going to retire for years, but if I wanted to really try something new, it would be acting,“ Trebek told People. "Do I want to be in that kind of grind? Obviously, I don't since I haven't done anything about it. I have a simple philosophy about things like this: If you really wanted it, you would have done something about trying to get it."
Trebek stated that he’s been hosting the show for so long that fans see him as a longtime family friend rather than an unapproachable celebrity. Nationwide, the host has been broadcasting into family rooms for fun with facts five nights per week."I'm considered more of an extended family member because you get used to seeing me in your home every night," Trebek said. "So when people pass me on the street, it's more like, 'Hi, how are you?' and not like, 'Oh my God, can I get your autograph?'"
We’re happy that Trebek is sticking around for now! Can you imagine anyone else reading out the categories? Who do you think would make a great replacement host when the time comes for Trebek to actually retire? Let us know in the comments!
