Motherhood should be a beautiful part of a woman's life, yet it can be full of criticism and frustration thanks to people who are quick to critique others. And it's not just ordinary mothers who are victims of this. It happens across the board when it comes to celebrities who found themselves the targets of vicious commenters on social media. It can be hard to raise your child properly when you're constantly in the limelight and people are quick to point out your mistakes and drag you through the mud for them.
Mommy shaming is a serious problem. A very serious problem. According to a survey of 227 moms conducted last October by mobile app mom.life, 80% of the moms, or 4 in 5, admitted they were victims of mommy shaming; 67% of the moms who had been shamed said they had been shamed by other moms; and 64% of the moms who have been shamed said they've been shamed for their feeding choice.
But if said commenters thought they could change the behavior of celeb mothers, they were sadly mistaken. These celeb moms didn't let the criticism get to them and they were quick to snap back at the haters. Here are 20 celeb moms who were mommy shamed.
20 Mila Kunis Says Society Is The Problem
People tend to get up in arms when it comes to the breastfeeding debate, causing lots of moms to get shamed for breastfeeding in public. One of those moms is Mila Kunis. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actress admitted that she openly breastfed her daughter Wyatt in public and that she got many disapproving eyes for her behavior. She said she did it everywhere; in restaurants, in the subway, and at the airport because she had to feed her daughter whenever she was hungry, and there were plenty of times she didn't bring a cover. “If it’s not for you, don’t look," she said.
"That’s what I chose to do, but I think it’s unfortunate that people are so hard on women who choose to do it and do it in public.
In the States and in our culture, we s*xualize the breast so much that there’s an aspect of it that people just don’t know how to wrap their head around."
19 Beyoncé Is Criticized Either Way
Sometimes you just can't win. While on a sushi date in Los Angeles with husband Jay-Z, Beyoncé snapped an Instagram photo of herself sipping on a glass of red wine, and she was relentlessly attacked online for it. People were quick to question whether or not she should have been drinking red wine while breastfeeding her twins, Rumi and Sir Carter. "You feed your children with your breast why do you drink?!" one person commented. "Beyoncé please don't be drinking too much," wrote someone else.
Then there were other commenters who just assumed Beyoncé wasn't breastfeeding and shamed her for that. "Guess she's not breastfeeding," one user said. Just like the critics were quick to attack the singer, a fan was quick to come to her defence. "No one's business what she drinks or what the babies drink from."
18 Charlize Theron Was Misunderstood
Charlize Theron may have acted in a film titled Monster, but she probably wasn't expecting to be called one in real life. The fact that she doesn't care one bit about what others have to say about her, especially when it comes to her parenting skills, is what has helped her the most as a mother, she says. She told US Weekly, "Both of my kids grew up on formula and I remember a mom saying to me, ‘You should really buy breast milk.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ that’s a line you just don’t cross."
In addition to that, she was labeled a "monster mom" by a tabloid because her son Jackson was having a meltdown in front of the paparazzi. They claimed she was dragging him when in reality, Theron was simply trying to calm him down and get him away from the cameras.
17 Reese Witherspoon Didn't Do Anything Wrong
Reese Witherspoon was food shamed when it came to fixing breakfast for her son Tennessee, who was a toddler at the time. For breakfast one morning, she prepared a breakfast of two cinnamon rolls and an apple for him and posted a photo to Instagram of her work. Not too long afterward, the disapproving commenters came out to chastise the Legally Blonde actress.
One commenter wrote, "Sugar and more sugar…oh, and one piece of fruit. That will definitely get the toddler moving." Another said, "What a horrible thing to feed a growing child for breakfast." But there were others who praised Witherspoon for fixing such a breakfast. "Wow what a cool breakfast to wake up too! Especially with the amount of energy they burn in one day! Good for you!" one subscriber wrote.
16 Kristin Cavallari Had Crissy Teigen Help Her
Fashion designer Kristin Cavallari was just trying to have a good time at the beach with her family when she snapped a photo to Instagram of her husband playing on the sand with their sons Camden and Jaxon. Unfortunately, she received a torrent of scorn from those who thought her sons were "dangerously underweight" and believed Cavallari was starving them. But she wasn't one to let the haters get to her. “Yep, I starve my children,” she said.
“Just blocked the most people I’ve ever blocked in my entire life. Happy 4th hahaha.”
Chrissy Teigen defended the former reality star on Twitter, writing, "I will never know why parents criticize others so harshly, knowing they'd go insane if they were on the receiving end all the time."
15 Jessica Simpson Has Mommy-Daughter Days
Jessica Simpson has pretty much been shamed for everything when it comes to raising her daughter Maxwell. After she shared photos to Instagram of her daughter, who was five at the time, playing in the family's backyard in a bikini, she received a flood of negative comments, causing her to delete the photos from her page. They accused her of posting inappropriate photos of her child and even went as far as to say Social Services should have been called on her. She also drew criticism for dyeing her daughter's hair.
But it was nothing compared to the backlash she received after she snapped a photo for Instagram of her and Maxwell wearing makeup in a MAC store with the caption: "This is not an #ad, @maccosmetics is my daughter’s favorite store!
Mommy-daughter day with #MAXIDREW #girlygoth." The Internet went into a frenzy, some questioning Simpson's decision to let her daughter wear makeup while others thought there was nothing wrong.
14 Mariah Carey And Her Movie Night With Her Kids
Every child is different, and some need certain things longer than other children do. But not everyone seems to know that. Mariah Carey shared an Instagram post of her and her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, snuggling up together on movie night. It was a simple photo to show her followers that she was spending time with her kids, but her sharp-eyed followers were quick to notice that Moroccan, who was four at the time, had a pacifier in his mouth. Some of them went on and on about how he was too old to use a pacifier and they called out the "Songbird Supreme" for being too lazy to ween her son off.
13 Alicia Silverstone Posts Videos On Her Website
Clueless star Alicia Silverstone was called "clueless" when it came to "dangerous" parenting advice, and she's also been called gross for the way she fed her son Bear. When Bear was ten months old, she shared a video on her website The Kind Life of her pre-chewing her son's food and transferring it to him via mouth to mouth, much like how a bird feeds its children. While the actress garnered backlash from the Internet and disapproval from health experts who believed she could have been passing on germs to her son, she said she didn't regret posting the video.
"I can understand that it would make some people feel uncomfortable, possibly, because it's new to them.
But I do want to let you know that this has been going on for thousands of years — still going on all over the place — and it's natural," she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
12 Ciara Had Her Fans Defend Her
It was a sunny day when Ciara and her husband Russell Wilson took their daughter Sienna and her son Future Zahir, whom she had with her ex, rapper Future, on a family vacation to China. After Ciara shared a video of the family going down the Great Wall of China in a toboggan, people began debating whether or not it was a safe ride for the kids, even though Ciara had Sienna strapped to her chest in a secure baby carrier and Future Zahir was seated firmly in Wilson's lap.
She was called "dumb" and "irresponsible" among other things. One commenter wrote, "It's really a shame you have "no mother instincts" and the "safety of your child doesn't come to mind!" Fans of the singer were quick to come to her aid. One of them wrote, "The judgments are serious and not for anyone to make. Ciara live your life! People wish they could be this free!!"
11 Blake Lively's Husband Took The Blame
In this particular case, Blake Lively was shamed along with her husband Ryan Reynolds. After Lively posted a photo of Reynolds holding their son James in a baby carrier for Father's Day, commenters didn't waste any time telling the acting couple their son wasn't positioned properly, and one commenter told the couple to "read an instruction manual." The Gossip Girl alum left the photo up but Reynolds apologized for the mistake on The Today Show.
“It was me, guys. I’m a first-time dad and that is not the first mistake I’ve made and I can guarantee it won’t be the last.”
Even after he issued out the apology, commenters continued to attack Lively on her feed.
10 Victoria Beckham Is Affectionate
Victoria Beckham wished her daughter Harper a happy birthday on Instagram with a photo with a caption that read: "Happy Birthday baby girl. We all love you so much X kisses from mummy X." The photo in question was Beckham kissing her daughter on the lips, an act which many seemed to think was inappropriate. One commenter wrote, "Eww sorry I'm old fashioned." Another said, "It's nice but you're not supposed to kiss your children on the lips. I'm not trying to be rude but it's true."
Many parents supported Beckham by posting photos of themselves kissing their children on the lips, showing that there was nothing wrong with what she was doing. One commenter said, "The fact that so many people s*xualize a photo of a mother with her child is so disgusting. This is a beautiful photo and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it."
9 Coco Austin Was Under Scrutiny
Coco Austin has faced an onslaught of mommy shamers ever since she gave birth to her daughter Chanel Nicole with husband Ice-T. Most of the shaming is directed towards her choice of attire, some deeming her outfits too steamy when spending time with her daughter. She's been criticized for taking her daughter swimming with the sharks, who was two years old at the time. She's also been criticized for getting Chanel Nicole's ears pierced when the latter was two months old, angry commenters calling her out for harming her child by "putting holes" in the child.
The actress took a lot of heat after sharing a photo to Instagram of her breastfeeding her daughter when she was two, one commenter, in particular, saying that once the child had a mouthful of teeth, it was time to stop breastfeeding and switch to solid foods. Austin responded, "believe me she loves food…she still breastfeeds when she goes down for a nap and at night..chill.”
8 Kate Beckinsale Defends Her Choices
After Kate Beckinsale posted a video of herself dancing and having fun with some friends, she received a comment from a commenter who said, "Go home and take care of your kids. Hehe!” The actress replied to their comment, tagging the Instagram user directly.
"What's amazing is it is no longer the 18th century, so now that my one child is grown, I don't have to stay home (while she's out with her own friends ) playing the pianoforte,
getting consumption, or trying to secure her a marriage. But thank you for the quaint blast from the past. Oh and I can vote now too! Yay.” The Instagram user later apologized for his "horrible" joke, but Beckinsale didn't respond.
7 Coco Rocha Believes It's Her Choice
Model Coco Rocha was just trying to rave on Instagram about an app that delivered baby formula for her daughter Ioni, who was six months old, when she became the target of an onslaught of mommy shaming. Rocha got slammed for giving her child formula instead of breast milk and received a flood of hateful comments on the post. The model responded to the ruckus in another post that read, "Getting a lot of unwanted advice based on my last post. Not that this is anyone's business — I loved breastfeeding Ioni for the first 5 months of her life and then one day my milk went dry. It happens to every mom at different times.
She's been on formula for a few weeks now and seems to be doing just fine. Anyone who has a negative comment to make on the way I raise my baby will be blocked.
This is not a democracy, everyone doesn't get a say."
6 Kelly Clarkson Has Loyal Fans
Add Kelly Clarkson to the long list of celebrity parents shamed for sharing personal family moments on social media. The Grammy Award-winning singer was shamed by trolls on the Internet after she shared a video of her son River, two years old at the time, trying Nutella on toast for the first time. "Yep. Start them out with cancer at an early age," one commenter wrote. And if that wasn't bad enough, Clarkson was also shamed for her weight. "Make your own @kellyclarkson. Nutella is packed with sugars, don't make your kids blow up, too," someone said.
A fan of Clarkson's readily came to her defence and shut the haters down. "I think this is so cute!!! Let her enjoy some Nutella. And to the person who commented about weight, I promise this piece of toast with Nutella on it will not make her 'blow up.' And for the 'as a mom' commenters, as a mom you should keep your mother shut and stop judging other moms!"
5 Jenni "JWoww" Farley Defends Herself
Jersey Shore alum Jenni "JWoww" Farley made headlines for getting her body back in shape after giving birth to her son Greyson, a feat that took less than two weeks, but she also made headlines after she found herself on the receiving end of vicious remarks from mommy shamers. It all started when she shared a photo of her husband, businessman Roger Matthews, holding their son in his arms while in the pool. Then came a flood of comments opposing her decision to allow her then-two-months-old son to be in the pool and questioning whether or not he was wearing sunscreen. The reality-show star clapped back at the commenters, saying,
"First off, my son is two months and in a salt-water pool up to his belly. Probably for a total of 3 minutes.
Let me explain to the haters that decided to comment about no sunscreen and the dangers. My son actually does have sunscreen on. It's the same concept as diaper cream. Probably even better than the crap you lather your children in. Go enjoy your Sunday now.”
4 Tess Holliday Wasn't Having Any Of It
Plus-sized model Tess Holliday wasn't just mommy shamed and criticized for her figure. After she posted pregnancy photos to Instagram with the news that she was expecting her second child, the trolls were quick to attack her, calling her "obese" and "unhealthy." There were other comments such as, "You don't look pregnant" and "you are putting your baby at risk."
Holliday wasn't having any of it and she clapped back at the haters on Facebook, saying, "I'm not the first plus-size woman in the public eye to have a baby and share it with the world, and I certainly won't be the last. However, I'm part of a small minority that's telling you it's okay to not have a perfect baby bump, or not show at all, to be plus size and have a healthy child, and most importantly, to find a care provider that doesn't shame you about your size. It's also okay to tell someone off when they give you unsolicited advice about what's 'best' for you and your baby. As women, we know what's best and that's our business. No one else’s.”
3 Chrissy Teigen Stands Up For Moms Everywhere
We have to start this list out with one of the most outspoken celebrity mom out there, model Chrissy Teigen. She's been called out on more than one occasion, which is probably why she isn't afraid to stand up for herself or for other celebrity mothers who find themselves being mommy shamed.
Teigen's been criticized for choosing the gender of her child with John Legend, as the two decided on a female embryo while going through IVF treatments, and she's been criticized for going out to dinner shortly after giving birth.
She's also been criticized for the way she held her daughter Luna while going down a slide, commenters saying she could have broken Luna's legs. Her response? "Wish you guys would have told me about the leg thing earlier. They broke. Both of them. And everyone else's in the park broke too just from watching it happen. There are so many broken legs here..."
2 Pink Is Just Like Every Other Mom
Just like Chrissy Teigen, Pink is pretty outspoken when it comes to her parenting choices and doesn't put up with criticism from anybody on social media. When she was shamed for sitting in front of a microwave while drinking coffee (decaf which she clearly said in the Instagram caption) while pregnant with her son Jameson, she said on Twitter,
“This was a really good laugh. Enjoy over a cup of coffee,”
she wrote before another Tweet that read, “Uh oh. Now I’m a mommy shamer shamer.” The pop star was also criticized for holding her son in a carrier while near the stove, causing her to draw disapproval from the Internet who thought she was putting Jameson in an unsafe position, even though she wasn't holding him directly over the stove. A fan of Pink's clapped back for her, saying, "It's funny how these mom shamers are quick to judge. Oh wait, because they're the 'perfect' parent. I just wish they would get a life and let you be a parent."
1 Hilary Duff Is A Great Single Mom
Hilary Duff finds motherhood to be a joyous experience, but one thing she doesn't find joyous is the amount of scrutiny she receives as she raises her son Luca. She told Yahoo that she felt judged when she decided to give Luca formula at seven months old and when she tried vaccinating her son, people told her to try oil remedies instead. The Lizzie McGuire star got particularly upset when she was labeled a "C Minus Mother" by a tabloid.
"I can’t help it if someone’s taking a picture when I’m taking him to get a haircut — and he hates haircuts and he doesn’t like the photographers and throws a tantrum and then there’s a headline: 'Can’t Control Her Child!'"
Duff also came under fire for kissing her son, who was four years old at the time, on the lips while on a trip to Disneyland — an act which some thought was inappropriate.
