The rise of social media has allowed everyone in the world to become more connected to each other and more aware of everything going on in the world than ever before, and social media has undeniably become a powerful tool for celebrities to use in their personal and professional lives. But bad things almost inevitably follow with good things, and even the people who plan out every aspect of their own public image can make some major mistakes that wind up embarrassing themselves or the people around them unintentionally. Sometimes, they just make a misstep, and sometimes, they do something so wildly stupid or offensive that it seems like the entire internet decides to drag them for days about it, but either way, they wind up embarrassing themselves in an unfortunately memorable way.

And even though we've now all had years to acquaint ourselves with social media and learn what should and should not be posted on the internet for all to see, there are still celebrities who are making unfortunately obvious mistakes that will now go down in their Wikipedia bios forever. You'd think that everyone would live and learn, but even in this past year, there have been ridiculous social media fails by celebrities who should clearly know better by now. So, when it comes to the most embarrassing celebrity social media flubs in the past year, who has made the most memorable and humiliating mistakes?

Bow Wow Getting Caught Flying Commercial After Gramming That He Was Flying Private

For those few people out there who still even think about the faded hip-hop star, Bow Wow, it seems unlikely that anyone would assume that he had enough money or a high enough profile to warrant taking a private jet anywhere, which makes his Instagram blunder even more embarrassing. Before taking off on a trip, Bow Wow posted a picture that appeared to be him approaching a private jet to his Instagram, clearly, meaning to imply that he was about to take off in said jet, but unfortunately, it would seem that one of his Instagram followers happened to be booked on the same commercial flight that Bow Wow was on and his fellow passenger immediately posted a photo outing him to Twitter.

Of course, there's nothing embarrassing about flying anywhere on a commercial flight, and only the richest of rich celebrities can shell out for regular private flights wherever they're going, so there was really no need for Bow Wow to front like that at all. Except he decided to fake it anyway, and because he got caught in his embarrassing lie, he brought a massive amount of attention to something that was a completely normal thing to be doing anyway.

Gigi Hadid Imitating Buddha And Getting Banned From China

Models are paid to stand there and look pretty, not to be politically and socially aware, which is why it is usually good for them to avoid offending anyone as much as possible in order to ensure they're as marketable as possible. And when Gigi Hadid held up a Buddha cookie and then squinted and slanted her eyes to imitate the deity she presumably wasn't intending to be offensive, however, quite a lot of Asian people took offense at her imitation and saw it more as a mockery than anything. To make matters worse, the Victoria's Secret fashion show was planned to take place in Shanghai last year, so one of VS's most high profile models being accused of racism against Asians just prior to the event was not a good look for anyone.

Ultimately, Hadid wound up posting to her social media that she, unfortunately, would not be able to attend the show that year and while her phrasing certainly implied that pulling out of the event was her choice some have speculated that that may not have been the case. The outrage was strong enough that many assumed that either VS or the nation of China itself asked her not to attend.

Meghan Markle's Co-Star Has To Delete His Account

It's not unusual for co-stars to mess around with each other on their social media accounts, but it is pretty unusual when your co-star on a moderately successful cable show suddenly announces that she's about to become a member of the English royal family, and Suits star, Patrick J. Adams, learned that lesson the hard way. Adams has spent years sharing the screen with actress and future wife of Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and when their show was celebrating it's 100th episode Adams decided to post an old photo of Meghan kissing him on the cheek and jokingly captioned it, leaving Prince Harry feeling shook about it.

The response to his post was so swift, intense, and angry that Adams decided to temporarily delete his social media to avoid the royalty frenzy. He also explained that the misinterpretation of his intention made him uncomfortable, saying that he and Meghan had been good friends since the series began and that he was upset that so many people seemed to be misconstruing his intent with posting the old picture, which coincidentally was taken long before Markle had even met the prince anyway. But he did admit that his experience made him realize that he couldn't just treat Markle like his friend and coworker anymore because her profile had exploded so much.

Lorde's Unintentionally Awkward Tweet

Pretty much everyone in the world loves a warm bath and a fabulous bathtub, but most people don't wind up expressing that love in the incredibly awkward and tone-deaf way that musician, Lorde, did. The songstress decided to post a photo of her sick marble tub on to her Instagram, and captioned it with the unintentionally inappropriate lyrics to Whitney Houston's classic ballad, "I Will Always Love You." While the sentiment behind it is understandable, Lorde clearly forgot that Houston tragically passed away in her hotel bathtub, and unsurprisingly, many of her Instagram followers immediately made the connection and pointed out the faux pas.

After realizing her mistake, Lorde immediately apologized and explained that it was an inappropriate but unintentional coincidence, and immediately deleted the offending post. But the damage was done and social as well as mainstream media went wild over it, and although she said that it was a dumb mistake and she didn't even make the connection until others pointed it out to her, she was dragged by quite a lot of people for the gaffe. Obviously, it wasn't the kind of social media mistake that ends someone's career, but she'll certainly rethink posts like that in the future.

Rihanna's Extra Thumbs In Her Photo

There are photoshop flubs and then there are pictures like the one that Rihanna posted to her Instagram when she was attending a carnival. Usually, celebs who photoshop pictures for their social media wind up leaving a few wonky mistakes that tip off the more savvy viewers that something in this picture has been messed with, but it's pretty rare that anyone actually accidentally gives themselves an extra appendage, and somehow, doesn't notice it before posting it publicly.

Presumably, Ri was trying to tweak some part of her midsection to make herself look better (which let's be real, probably wasn't even necessary in the first place), but somehow, didn't notice that her tweaking resulted in the sudden appearance of two thumbs on her right hand instead of one. And you'd think that if you were fussing with one particular part of your body, you'd actually notice something as drastic as an extra bright turquoise fingernail, but apparently not. Plus, when you're decked out like a peacock and there's something bright and shiny to look at in nearly every inch of a photograph it's almost certainly unnecessary to be making small adjustments to your appearance, especially if you're someone who naturally looks like Rihanna.

Kris Jenner's Photoshop

Most people don't look at anything involving the Kardashian Jenner family with the expectation that they're going to see something realistic or relatable, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't set off some alarm bells when they post something that is so obviously fake. Kris Jenner is, obviously, an image-conscious lady, so it's not a great shock that she might tweak her social media pictures to make herself look better. What is a little sketchier though is when she does things like this, where the photoshopping of her arm is so obvious that you can actually see the warping of the background behind her. But what seems doubly disingenuous about this is that she posted this picture as an Instagram advertisement for the "cleanse" that she's holding in her hand.

Obviously these cleanses are designed to (or at least sold with the intention of) help people lose weight and get more fit, so editing your Instagram photo to make yourself look like you're in better shape specifically so you can shill for some cleanse that is probably little better than snake oil is especially shady. It's one thing to publicly state that one of your posts is an ad, but faking your appearance for that ad is quite another.

Paulina Rubio Praying For Adriana Lima's Fans (instead of Ariana Grande's)

Offering a nice thought after an international tragedy is always a sweet thing to do, and when you're a celeb with an enormous amount of social media attention, it's actually pretty noticeable if you don't comment on major world events, so it's no surprise that so many celebs rallied around fellow famous face Ariana Grande and the dozens of innocent victims of the terrorist attack at her concert in Manchester. What was a little iffy though, was the musician, Paulina Rubio's, response to the tragic events. The thought behind her statements were fine, obviously, everyone hopes and prays that people dealing with an unforeseen trauma will get through it as best they can and wants to offer their own support.

However, Paulina offered her condolences to Victoria's Secret model, Adriana Lima, instead of the singer, and actual victim of the attack, Ariana Grande. She got a little bit closer to her target when she directed her message @Adrianagrande, however, she still mistakenly addressed Adriana Grande instead of Ariana. In such a horrific time it's unlikely that many people were offended by Rubio's error, but when you're talking about a major event with global impact and you're presumably seeing a hundred headlines about it a day, you'd kind of expect someone to get Ariana Grande's name right.

Chelsea Handler Thinks Male Congressman Is A Woman

With a name like Dana it's not that surprising that someone would mistake this male congressman for a woman, however, if you're going to go to the effort of publicly dragging someone on social media you want to at least get your facts straight, and when you're relegated to 140 characters or less it's pretty hard to make such an obvious mistake in so little space. But comedienne and TV host, Chelsea Handler, did just that when she decided to call out Republican representative, Dana Rohrbacher, on his ongoing ties to Russia, and while the point that she was trying to make was actually technically right, the fact that she revealed that her knowledge of the politician was so basic that she didn't even know his gender, kind of undermined the point she was trying to make.

Celebrities have the right to use whatever platforms they have to try to express their own feelings just like everyone else does, but if you know that you're going to have millions of eyes reading whatever it is you have to say then at least get your basic information straight is kind of a necessity, and making such a simple blunder is an easy way to undermine what you're trying to say.

All The Celebs Promoting The Fyre Festival

Promoting products and events on social media has basically become its own cottage industry for celebrities, and it's not much of a surprise since it's an incredibly easy way to make a buck and there is almost no risk involved. However, there is a difference between almost no risk and no risk, period, which a lot of celebrities came to realize once the disastrous Fyre Festival completely imploded and a lot of famous faces realized that they had been personally promoting the event themselves in exchange for some fast cash.

Certainly, none of the celebrities and influencers who were paid to promote the event could have known that things would end up going THAT badly, but where most of the more familiar faces that promoted Fyre Festival like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Emily Ratajkowski went wrong is that they did paid promotions for the festival without actually disclosing that it was a paid promotion, which is actually illegal. And, of course, when the Fyre Festival went from a failed music event to the subject of a hundred million dollar lawsuit, the undisclosed paid promotions became a pretty hot topic of discussion and a potentially serious problem for the celebrities who participated in it.

Logan Paul Ends His Own Youtube Career

It's hard to call Logan Paul an actual celebrity, but this professional YouTuber has actually built up an audience of millions from his ridiculous, idiotic behavior. And considering that he made his name off of being a moron, it's no real surprise that he wound up pulling something this gross, but you'd think that any human being with a modicum of respect or sense would have understood that posting this controversial video to his YouTube channel was going to bring more than just views to him. Paul recently went on a trip to Japan and executed his worst video idea ever.

He decided to pay a visit to a Japanese forest that has a tragic and sad reputation. It is known for being a place where people at their lowest emotional states often visit, often with sad and tragic  consequences. Of course, Logan Paul upset some people by choosing this as the location for one of his YouTube videos. And when Paul decided to venture into the park (wearing a Monsters, Inc. hat for Pete's sake) he happened upon what he presumably went in there to find— someone who had taken their own life. But, of course, he understood the seriousness of the situation and decided to forget all about it. JK, he posted the footage of this dead guy for clickbait.

Tomi Lahren's Embarrassing Post

Tomi Lahren has essentially built her career out of doing stupid things because she has the right to do them, but she took things to another level when she decided to post an Instagram photo of herself in support of gun rights. That, in itself, isn't much of a shock, but Tomi flaunted her 2nd amendment rights by tucking a handgun into her pants. Her yoga pants. And aside from looking totally ridiculous, the photo was actually a hilariously over the top example of what a bad gun owner would do.

Tucking a gun into your clothing is one of the easiest ways to accidentally injure yourself (just ask Plaxico Burress), and spandex pants aren't exactly the stablest way to hold up a piece of metal weaponry. People on Twitter understandably lost their minds about the ridiculous Instagram post, and the photo went viral, with each new poster adding their own quippy caption to the embarrassing picture. And if you can believe it, the post was actually a promotional post, specifically for these athletic pants that, apparently, have a multitude of possible uses, including packing some heat to your next pilates class and ensuring that you're safe from attack even during downward dog.

Celebrities Smoking In The Met Gala Bathroom

You'd think that being invited to the Met Gala would be cool enough, but apparently, at last year's event, a squad of celebs decided to throw their own impromptu mini party in the bathroom at the gala. And while most celebrities assume that they can do whatever they want whenever they want, a few of the attendees of this bathroom bash made a major fashion faux pas when they decided to take a cigarette break in the bathrooms.

It's gross to light up a smoke pretty much anywhere that isn't outside these days, and most smokers are at least considerate enough to take their nasty habit and keep it away from any non-smokers who might be irritated by smoke in their face, but this is really taking selfishness to another level. Like... you're at the Met Gala for Pete's sake. If there were ever a time to hold off on smoking a cigarette indoors it's when you're at one of the most famous art museums in the world. They're all lucky that they didn't get banned by Anna Wintour for life because of that move, but to add to the ridiculousness, quite a few of them decided to post pictures of themselves lighting up on their social media.

Kim Kardashian's Too Obvious Photoshops

When people are looking at pictures of Kim Kardashian, it's very doubtful that they're looking for a raw and real look at Kim, or at the very least it's doubtful that they're expecting to see a natural and dressed down Kim Kardashian on her social media. However, there is a difference between tuning up her photos to make Kim look like the overly perfected model we've all come to expect from her and editing her photos so blatantly that it's hard to imagine what the original picture could have even looked like because the photoshop has gotten so wonky.

And frankly, while most people are more than accustomed to seeing photoshopped pictures of celebrities in professional photo shoots or at major industry events, most people don't immediately think "Photoshop" when they see a picture of a celeb literally just walking down the street in some workout gear. There's not really anything wrong with wanting to look good, but if you're not comfortable posting an even slightly realistic picture of yourself in a real-world situation, then maybe just don't post pictures of yourself in real-world situations. And while this is kind of Kim K's business, it is a little hilarious to imagine her poring over every inch of a "casual" picture before posting it to Instagram.

Chris Pratt Forgets The Necessity Of Subtitles

Actor Chris Pratt has put his foot in his mouth on a few occasions, but luckily, when he made this social media faux pas, he immediately apologized for his insensitivity and said that he realized why he was being inconsiderate. Pratt posted a video on his Instagram to apologize for a moment in an interview when he told the viewing audience to turn up the volume instead of just reading the subtitles, and quite a few people pointed out to him that for people with any kind of hearing impairments captions are a complete necessity that is often overlooked, which can exclude the hearing impaired from normal everyday activities like going to movies or yes, even watching interviews of their favorite actor.

After being called out, Pratt immediately apologized and seemed to be very sincere. He went on to explain why captioning is such a vital tool for the millions of people who deal with hearing impairments are, he encouraged Instagram to put automatic closed captioning on their videos, and he even repeated his apology and message in American sign language as a mea culpa for his thoughtless behavior. And while it was a somewhat insensitive oversight, it's nice that he fessed up to the mistake and did everything he could to make up for it.

Paris Jackson's Incredibly Awkward Australian Caption

Paris Jackson wasn't even born when this Australian tragedy initially took place so it's not a great shock that she didn't understand what she was referring to when she posted an Instagram with a dingo and with the caption "a dingo ate my baby," but it's also no surprise that Australia itself took a lot of umbrage to such a casual reference to such a horrifying incident. Jackson explained that she only thought it was a meme and didn't know the basis of that meme until people called her out for it, and immediately apologized for offending anyone with what she said, but this is why it's always good to do a little googling before making an offhanded reference to something you don't really understand.

For any of you that don't know, while "a dingo ate my baby" is something you might be familiar with hearing in a humorous context, it's a phrase that stems from a case in Australia where a woman's newborn daughter was taken by dingoes and killed, and that woman was convicted of killing her daughter and wrongfully imprisoned for it for years until some evidence surfaced that confirmed her bizarre story to actually be true.

Kendall Jenner's Pepsi Ad Goes Viral For All The Wrong Reasons

It's always hard to predict how or why a certain video might go viral, but Kendall Jenner became the unfortunate collateral damage in Pepsi's incredibly tone-deaf decision to take the idea of civil action and disobedience and rebrand it as a problem that can be easily fixed with the generous sharing of Pepsi. The concept of this ad was bound for failure, but the fact that they put model and reality star, Kendall Jenner, in the middle of it probably exacerbated that failure a hundredfold.

I don't think that anyone really expects Jenner to be informed on the political situations of middle class and lower class Americans, but the fact that Pepsi decided to hire one of the most unabashedly rich white girls, who has essentially made a career off of her rich white girlness, to become this ambassador of hope through carbonated beverages only made their bad decision seem so impossibly dumb that it's amazing no one put a stop to it before letting it out into the world. But they did let it out into the world, and the world laughed it's behind off at the ridiculousness of it all, and it, unfortunately, became a permanently iconic Kendall Jenner moment for all the wrong reasons.

Rob And Chyna Take Their Relationship Problems Public

The Kardashian family has built a multi-million dollar media empire off of their willingness to share their personal dramas with the viewing public, but when their meltdowns are not expertly edited by E! to make them look better it can become cringeworthy and downright embarrassing to watch. That became especially evident when Rob Kardashian recently broke up with his fiancee and baby mama, Blac Chyna, and decided that the best way of handling the dissolution of that relationship was to completely lose his mind about it on Instagram.

A lot of celebs like to engage in the occasional shade on their social media, but after putting Chyna on blast for supposedly kissing another guy after their breakup, Rob decided to go completely nuclear. In addition to going on repeated and uncomfortably explicit rants, slamming his ex and accusing her of illegal behavior, Rob actually decided to take things to an illegal level himself when he started posting private photos of Chyna on to his Instagram. Interestingly he also claimed that Chyna "needed help" multiple times throughout his tirade, which seems a little like the pot calling the kettle black, considering the insane vitriol he heaped on her for very little reason.

Celebs Buying Fake Followers

We all know that when it comes to being famous, your image is really everything, so it's not that big of a shock that a lot of celebrities like to spend a little cash on some fake social media followers in order to make themselves look more popular. But their reasons for purchasing their online popularity can be for more than just image, considering how influential online media has become in the past few years it's fairly common for celebrities to want to inflate their apparent influence in the hopes of parlaying that into some bigger paychecks.

This is especially true when it comes to a lot of social media "influencers," who aren't actual celebrities but just people who build a large social media following specifically so they can make money off of sponsorships and advertisements that they post on their social media accounts. But unfortunately for those who want to buy their success, the impact of bought followers seems to have very little positive impact. A lot of social media platforms are actively trying to eliminate this problem as well, so quite a few celebs have gone through the embarrassing experience of suddenly losing millions of followers when social media sites have purged themselves of fake accounts.

Stephen Amell's Awkward Anti-Beyonce Tweet

No one knows why Arrow star, Stephen Amell, would think that his opinion on Beyonce is relevant, but apparently, he wanted to share his thoughts on her headlining performance at Coachella and put himself in the cross hairs of the Beyhive in the process. Amell posted what was presumably meant to be a joke on his Twitter about Beyonce's show, but unfortunately, it wasn't particularly funny and it raised the ire of one of the biggest social media fan bases around. When people started getting aggressive with him, Stephen explained that it wasn't meant to be a joke about Beyonce, but that it was supposed to be a joke about beating traffic, even though there was no actual mention of traffic in his tweet.

Amell also said that Beyonce's fans seemed to be way overreacting and being way too sensitive about a "passive joke," which only propelled the arguments further. Eventually, Stephen took a hiatus from tweeting because the Beyonce fans were going after him nonstop, but he came back and still refused to back down or admit that his tweet could have been considered rude. Unsurprisingly, Beyonce never commented on the entire event, and obviously, her Coachella performance became an instant legend.

Sean Hannity's Twitter Denials Of Michael Cohen

The whole situation with Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's maybe lawyer and Sean Hannity's supposed friend and not his lawyer, seems to keep becoming more and more convoluted by the day. And it's certainly possible that Hannity is telling the truth and has no legal relationship with Cohen whatsoever, but if that's the truth, then he isn't doing a convincing job of selling that. Firstly, it makes no sense that he would be named as one of Cohen's few clients if he weren't, and the fact that he hid his relationship with the lawyer seems pretty sketchy.

However, after a short burst of speculation, Sean Hannity decided to address the rumors himself on his Twitter account, explaining that Michael Cohen has never been his lawyer, they've never had any kind of monetary transaction, and that he simply offered him occasional free legal advice as a friend. And if he's telling the truth and everything's on the up and up then that's all well and good, but if Cohen has any embarrassing or incriminating information about Hannity then that info, which would normally be protected under attorney client privilege if Cohen was actually his lawyer, would not be protected at all and could put Sean in some even hotter water.
