The royal family is actually pretty cool in real life! From eating out of Tupperware to jamming to the likes of Sting to enjoying a good laugh together, the royal family is more normal than we think when it comes to their daily habits and lifestyle. When we typically see the royals out and about in press photos, they often give a smile for the sake of being cordial, or even a laugh, because clearly, they have been taught how to be polite to their constituents and the commoners.
But now, thanks to insiders, we know more about the royal family than they would most likely allow the general public to see and witness. Of course, given their royal status, we don’t usually see them having a good time (except Prince Harry, who often gives us a look into his party boy lifestyle). We can only imagine how often this gets him in trouble with the Queen, even though we are now fully aware the Queen herself isn’t as stoic and stiff as she often appears to be out in public.
So, it’s nice to know they are quite normal despite being leaders of the United Kingdom. Let’s just say they fly public more often than not. Now that we have an inside scoop on just how cool they are, we only wish we could get to know them even more. In the meantime, check out a few tips of how the royal family is in real life, thanks to a few insiders who spilled the tea.
15 They Actually Have A Sense Of Humor
Who knew the royal family likes to get in a good laugh? When we typically see them, especially the veterans who have been in the game for decades, they sport a very stoic facial expression that looks like they haven’t cracked a smile in years. Still, it’s now been proven the royal family knows how to have fun, despite their seemingly always serious demeanor. Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, couldn’t hold back their laughter, as they watched a performance of Intuit singing in Canada. Prince Harry and his wife, Kate Middleton, also got in belly aching laughter when two girls sang a duet at the Iqaluit capital.
Even Queen Elizabeth isn’t exempt from a laugh-a-thon, as she and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, were seen laughing during a tug of war contest.
Fortunately for the royal family, it doesn’t end there, and they have been able to show the public they can have a jolly good time every once in a while. From Middleton taking a drink in broad daylight to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William’s infamous and unforgettable dance battle, to even Prince Phillip’s comments that always make headlines, it’s nice to know the royal family likes to laugh after all.
14 What Do They Actually Do For A Living?
Yes, being a member of the coveted royal family must keep all of the Dukes, Duchesses, Princes, and Princesses busy. But we couldn’t but wonder what they actually do all day? That question seemed to be answered when the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, had to fill out the job section on their newborn, Prince Louis’ birth certificate. What did they put, you ask? If you guessed “Prince of the United Kingdom” for William and “Princess of the United Kingdom” for Middleton, you guessed right, according to an insider, who obtained the official birth certificate for the newest member of the royal family.
Unfortunately, while this doesn’t actually explain what they do on a day-to-day basis, it does let the general public know their official job titles.
We know we aren’t the only ones who were curious. Plus, we’re not completely left out of the dark here. As the Prince and Princess of the United Kingdom, William and Kate, along with the rest of the royal family, have the important job of helping the Queen in her everyday responsibilities, such as providing charitable service. Sounds pretty productive!
13 Inside Prince Harry and Prince William’s Relationship
Don’t expect to see the two popular royal brothers indulging in sibling rivalry in front of the whole world. In fact, Prince Harry and Prince William are actually very close friends as well as brothers. Their close relationship was revealed when Harry, who is slated to marry his fiancée, Meghan Markle, on May 19, asked his brother to be his best man. Interestingly enough, Markle has opted out of having a maid of honor, but that’s another story. When it comes to Harry and William, one source close to the royal family revealed, “The Duke of Cambridge is honored to have been asked and is very much looking forward to supporting his brother at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19th.”
Harry himself also revealed that he literally got down on one knee to officially ask William to be his best man, even though the older brother knew he would get the gig, as Harry was his best man in his wedding back in 2011.
William also said he had plans to repay Harry for the bachelor party festivities Harry planned for William before he married Middleton. During his speech at Williams’ wedding, Harry also made fun of Williams’ bald spot and teased his romantic conversations William had with Middleton. Let’s just hope these royal brothers behave!
12 Meghan Markle Still Keeps It Real With Her Friends
While Meghan Markle has decided not to have a maid of honor stand by her side during her big ceremony that will place her in the royal family, she still keeps in contact with some of her closest friends. It’s safe to say she hasn’t completely ghosted them. While her wedding planner was a good friend of hers from Toronto, actress, Priyanka Chopra, of ABC’s, Quantico, also revealed her friendship with Markle is still going strong. Despite Markle’s busy schedule from attending royal events to planning the royal wedding of the year, Chopra said Markle texts her “a lot.”
She also confirmed reports that Markle is actually pretty down-to-earth in real life. “She really is a [normal girl],” added Chopra. “I’ve known her for three years now. I’m so happy for everything that’s happened to her because I really feel like she’s one of those female icons that I feel could be a strong idol for girls around the world because she really cares about the world.”
Chopra and Markle met at Elle magazine’s Women in Television ceremony in 2016. Chopra is no stranger to raving about Markle as she said in another interview that Markle is a woman who can change the world. “She’s just a really real girl.”
11 You’ll Never See Them Cross Their Legs & Other Royal Rules
While this one isn’t too surprising, it’s certainly a factor that reveals what the royal family is like in real life. Yes, we never see them cross their legs. But did you know that’s because it’s a rule that they’re not allowed to? Instead, they are ordered to sit up straight. If they must cross something for comfort, they are allowed to cross their ankles. But you’ll never see the cross go as high up as the knee. They are also permitted to swing their legs over to the side when their ankles are crossed.
Another thing you won’t see is children wearing pants before the age of 8. Dresses and shorts are the go-to for the royal kiddos, and when women do wear skirts or dresses, they must wear tights or stockings underneath.
Speaking of royal babies, in case you were wondering, the Queen is always the first to know when one is born. After the baby arrives, the royal palace celebrates with a 62-gun salute. Sounds major, and we’d expect nothing less from the fancy royal family. Here’s another fun fact: British monarchs get to celebrate their birthday twice a year. Just another reason to envy the royal family.
10 The Queen Gets Behind The Wheel
There are a couple of things that reveal the details of the Queen’s day-to-day life. For starters, while most think she has a special driver to take her to run her royal errands, she actually drives herself. But the cool part is, she’s the only person in the entire country who does not have to have a driver’s license in order to operate a moving vehicle. Still, while she received driving lessons and training at 18, she knows how to do much more as she was once a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service. There, she was trained as a driver and even a mechanic.
So yes, the Queen knows how to rebuild engines, and even drive ambulances and trucks. It gets better. Her car also isn’t required to have a license plate.
While she has not been seen driving since May of last year, it’s still cool to know that she can whip it whenever she wants, and fix her car should anything go wrong. Interestingly enough, she is also not required to have a passport. This clearly has saved her from spending hours on end at the DMV and the post office. One of the countless ways it pays to be a royal ruler.
9 Their Constant Nods To The Late Princess Diana
It’s no secret the world and royal family lost Princess Diana way before her time. While her sons, Prince Harry and Prince William, continue to carry on her traditions, they give more nods and salutes to Princess Diana than the average person might recognize. Prince William and his wife often recognize Princess Diana in their own way. They decided to stay at her favorite hotel, the Carlyle when they made their very first trip to New York City together back in 2014.
A representative for the hotel spoke out and said she was aware that William was a fan of the venue. “I know that they had heard about it,” said the insider. “I heard him say that in the lobby that he had heard so much about his hotel through the years and they were really happy to be here.” Future newlyweds, Markle and Prince Harry, will also salute Princess Diana on their wedding day, as Markle is slated to wear Diana’s tiara. All of Princess Diana’s siblings will also be at the ceremony and assist in honoring the late Princess on the highly anticipated day. Prince Harry also gave a special nod to his mom when he proposed to Markle. Two diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection were in the ring Prince Harry gave Markle.
8 They’ll Cut Off One Of Their Own
The royal family might be a close-knit group but if anyone steps out of line, they are bound to be exiled. The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, knows this all too well. Ferguson was booted from the royal family lineage after snapshots of the oil tycoon, John Bryan, sucking her toes surfaced. While this was decades before the photos had the chance to go viral on the internet, it still sparked up quite the controversy. To make matters worse, Bryan was known to be Ferguson’s financial advisor. It didn’t take long for heads of the royal family to spring into action and boot Ferguson from their family as best as they could. She and her now ex-husband, Prince Andrew, still live together, even though it has been more than 20 years since she was removed from the royal family.
Prince Andrew and Ferguson also divorced in 1996 but still live on the same property. They have two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, together. While much time has passed, the royal family wants nothing to do with Ferguson.
She and Prince Andrew discussed getting back together in 2000, but Prince Philip made it clear he wouldn’t allow it. She was also not invited to Prince Harry and Prince William’s wedding. Word is she’ll be at Prince Harry and Markle’s wedding because he is still close with Ferguson.
7 Prince Harry Has A Romantic Side, But Prince William Doesn’t
While both Prince Harry and Prince William will soon be married to beautiful women, it’s been said that the younger of the two royal brothers is the most romantic. Word is Prince Harry will be letting everyone know he’s off the market after his luxurious, royal wedding to Meghan Markle on May 19. He reportedly plans to wear his wedding ring after the big day. While this is not a big deal here in the United States, considering millions of men reveal their marital status on their ring finger, Prince William does not wear a wedding ring, despite marrying his now wife, Kate Middleton, back in 2011. Their grandfather, Prince Phillip, also does not wear his ring.
Of course, Prince William’s decision not to wear his wedding band has nothing to do with his love for Middleton. Instead, he simply doesn’t like to wear jewelry.
The now iconic topic of whether or not to wear a wedding ring has been going on in the royal family for years. Prince Charles did wear his ring while he was married to Prince Harry and Prince Williams’ mother, Princess Diana. Now, he wears a ring on his pinky finger to acknowledge his marriage to Camilla.
6 Prince Andrew Gives Off Mean Girl Vibes
The word is that Prince Andrew is a mean girl, or he at least gives off those type of vibes. While a majority of the members of the royal family seem to have taken a liking to the future Princess, it looks like Prince Andrew has yet to come around to accepting Markle into the family. Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, reportedly was very “cold” toward Markle at her first major event with the royal family. Apparently, he is always much nicer to the other royal family members. “Meghan met a lot of the royal family at Sandringham House last Christmas,” one insider said. “Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice got on fantastically well with Meghan. It was all fine with Prince Edward, [Earl] of Wessex and his family.”
Interestingly enough, the warm welcome Markle received from the other royals made Prince Andrew’s rude introduction to her even more obvious. “She had a cold reception from the Duke of York,” the source confirmed. As for his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, she wasn’t in the country at the time, so there is no word on Ferguson’s thoughts of the royal bride-to-be. On a side note, it’s been said Markle and Ferguson look alike, so that could be why Prince Andrew wasn’t a fan.
5 Is Queen Elizabeth A Party Girl?
One insider said, absolutely! It turns out, Queen Elizabeth II likes to get a good party started. Who would ever know that? She certainly has a way of keeping her composure on point when she’s out and about accomplishing her royal duties. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t allowed to enjoy herself. But it doesn’t look like we have to remind her of that. Queen Elizabeth II’s party girl ways came to life during the planning of none other than her 92nd birthday party. She brought in the major birthday with a pop concert featuring the likes of Kylie Minogue, Shaggy, Sting, and even Tom Jones, last month. Her shindig took place at the illustrious Robert Albert Hall and was packed with her fellow Brits.
And if anyone wants to see actual video and proof of Queen Elizabeth having a good time at the party, it was all caught on camera and later aired on BBC. Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family aren’t short of excuses to celebrate with a big party this year. Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed their third child together earlier this month, Prince Harry’s wedding with Meghan Markle is just days away, and Princess Eugenie is slated to tie the knot this fall. Good thing the Queen is a party girl!
4 Their Commercial Flight Life Will Surprise You
Of course, it only makes sense that the royal family will take the private jet route when traveling by air. But you might be surprised to find out that flying commercial is often the royal’s mode of transportation. It turns out, when the royal family travels for personal reasons, they have to take a commercial flight. This held true when Prince Harry and his future wife, Meghan Markle, were seen flying on British Airways during a trip to Nice. They even sat in the back of the plane. Kate Middleton took a British Airways flight when she went to The Netherlands for her first tour by herself.
Interestingly enough, her mother was once a flight attendant for the popular airline. Even though they are part of the royal family, they have a strict budget to stick to that taxpayers in the United Kingdom have to pay for. So, that means they aren’t allowed to go private all the time. Still, when it’s a business trip, they are sure to fly private. The most recent visit includes Middleton and Prince William's recent trip to Canada. Prince Charles and Camilla also flew private when they took a trip to Australia. Hey, it never hurts to have a solid balance, even when you’re royal.
3 They’re Not Too Royal For Nicknames
Here’s an adorable fact about the royal family: they actually have nicknames. While millions have waited to find out the names of the youngest members of the royal family, such as Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and the newest member of the family, Prince Louis, it turns out the royals also use nicknames for one another. Interestingly enough, Meghan Markle has already joined the family tradition and given Prince Harry a nickname. She started calling him “Haz” a couple of weeks after she met him, her former Suits co-star, Gina Nelthorpe-Crowne, revealed. It might be safe to say that Kate Middleton and Prince William are a little more poised and don’t necessarily have official nicknames for each other.
Still, Middleton is said to call Prince William “babe” every once in a while as he calls Middleton “darling” or, get this, “poppet.” Middleton has come a long way since she was called “Squeak” as a child. Her sister, Pippa Middleton, used to go by “Pip,” according to a royal insider, who pointed out the sisters had guinea pigs when they were younger. Even the Queen gets in on the fun when it comes to nicknames. She is known as “Lilibet” and Prince Phillip calls her “Cabbage.” Prince George lovingly calls her “Gan-Gan,” and all of the children call Princess Camilla “GaGa.” Prince Charles and Camilla call each other “Gladys” and “Fred” as code names. Gotta love it.
2 Here’s Who They Jam To On A Regular
While the likes of Shaggy and Tom Jones entertained Queen Elizabeth II on her latest birthday, the royal family seems to be a musical family altogether. Prince Charles is reportedly a huge fan of the late Leonard Cohen and Three Degrees. Interestingly enough, Prince Charles has said former member, Sheila Ferguson, would never give him the time of day, no matter how many times he tried. Meanwhile, Prince Andrew has never hesitated to dish on his love for Black Eyed Peas star, Will.I.Am. “He is a major inspiration to a lot of young people from all sorts of backgrounds,” said Prince Andrew back in 2014.
As for Prince William and Kate Middleton, they are reportedly fans of Ellie Goulding. Prince William has also been known to belt out Coldplay songs to Prince George. Future newlyweds, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, like to blast Maggie Rogers, Janelle Monae, Crystal Fighters, The Tig, and Third Degrees. Prince Harry is also reportedly a fan of Skream. The two will reportedly have an “American slant” when it comes to the music at their wedding, according to the ceremony’s conductor. This will be his third royal wedding, so it’s safe to say Markle’s background as a Canadian and her popularity in America will play a part in the musical selections.
1 Prince Harry Loves McDonald's, The Queen Eats Out Of Tupperware
It looks like the royal family is much more similar to the average person than we thought. For starters, who knew Prince Harry and Prince William are fans of the golden arches? Word is the brothers can’t enough of McDonald’s. “I remember Princess [Diana] came into the kitchen one day and said, ‘Cancel lunch for the boys I’m taking them out, we’re going to McDonald’s,” the family’s former personal chef once revealed. He added the princes love to eat American foods such as pizza and potato skins as well. If that wasn’t surprising enough, the Queen also eats out of Tupperware on the regular. Forget the China and fancy dishes, Queen Elizabeth II is okay with the good old plastic wear every once in a while. “At Balmoral, she’d eat fruit from a plastic yellow Tupperware container,” an insider revealed.
On top of that, it’s not unusual for her majesty to eat cereal from a plastic container and she would actually make it herself. Talk about shock factor. When she’s not binging on cereal out of Tupperware, the queen also likes to indulge in dark chocolate. “The Queen loves to eat any food from the estate… But of course, she loves chocolate. That was her favorite, and it has to be dark chocolate. The darker the chocolate, the better.” We can officially say we know our way to the Queen’s heart.
