Ever thought of living off the grid? It’s not for the fainthearted because you need to have an inner drive to torture yourself like that in seclusion for the sake of living debt free. For those who actually break out on their own, and manage to live independently without public utilities or any other so-called modern inconveniences often tell stories of living a stress-free life without hassle. Ever thought of celebrities living off the grid? Well, they already kind of life off grid, secluded from everyone else. What really does it mean to live off the grid? Our generation is so intricately connected through technology that it may be very difficult to know who might be more capable of living off the grid than the other.
However, qualify to live off the grid, you need to be the kind of person who has little or no social media presence, and you decide not to live in the epicenter of all celebrity business. When you are a celebrity it’s very easy to stay visible, but how about staying very low-key? Just to get out of all the fussiness which is typically living in the hotbed of celebrity visibility? Ever wondered which celebrities have chosen to live away from prying eyes? We’ve compiled a list. It doesn’t mean that all the celebrities here eat what they grow or produce their own energy, but they definitely live a life separate from all of us, away from all the fussiness of city life.
Kelly Clarkson
Well, Kelly Clarkson is not just your average L.A. celebrity girl anymore. She decided to live in two smaller cities. At first, it was Mansfield, Texas, this is where she grew up, but later relocated to where she currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Her ranch in Tennessee was recently put up for sale. However, we aren’t sure if it was sold or not. But meanwhile, she’s gotten this new place in Tennessee where she says it’s just like Texas, but she can get work done as well. She describes the folks in Tennessee to be just like her hometown people of Tennessee, welcoming and nice. She has done duets with Jason Aldean and Reba McEntire, so it’s no wonder she wanted to make a home in the heart of country music.
Wiz Khalifa
When the young rapper had acquired enough money to be able to buy a multi-million dollar mansion, he unlike many other musicians of his caliber opted out of rushing to Hollywood. To the disbelief of many, he dropped $900k for a 4,000 square ft. home located in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. I bet you expect his house to be themed in black and yellow, however, his bedroom is green. It’s even environmentally friendly since it is fitted with modern panel sliding, high ceilings, and an outdoor irrigation system. Wiz and Amber were spotted checking out mansions in Hollywood when they were expecting a baby. He might not live off-grid anymore, but he definitely had a go at it for a while. Wiz Khalifa hit stardom after his hit single Black and Yellow, he is quite the sensation, and his fans love him.
Shania Twain
If you don’t know who Shania Twain is, then you are probably too young to be reading this stuff. The pop-country star moved to La Tour-de-Peliz in Switzerland with her then husband Mutt Lange. Shania broke out in the early 90s with her pop-country style love songs and gained instant fame. She says she was overwhelmed by all the attention and decided to seek solace far away from the spotlight. Well, Shania is one unique human being. After her divorce, she decided to remain at her Swiss chateau, where according to her interviews in the past, offer her tranquility and is the best retreat. She loves her space and is definitely enjoying it, she’s lived like that pretty much all of her career.
Tina Turner
It’s hard to forget Tina. She’s part of the building blocks of pop culture in America, and to be honest, an inspiration to a lot of musicians who are currently trending. She’s an American born Swiss singer. Back in 2013 she relinquished her American citizenship and moved abroad to Europe to settle in Switzerland. After gaining a Swiss passport and moving around the beautiful country, she was immediately taken away by its vast beauty and nature and decided this was where she was going to spend the rest of her life. Apart from her beautiful Villa in Switzerland, she’s apparently also acquired some new property south of France, a beautiful villa where she occasionally goes to unwind and relax in. Tina Turner made a name of herself, being one of the best-selling solo artists, and earning the name Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Julia Roberts
Julia’s case is a bit arguable. We can describe her living as someone who lives close to the grid but still living off the grid at the same time. According to Hollywood tabloids, it’s reported that Julia Roberts was living in Malibu. Well, Malibu isn’t too far from Los Angeles, but it’s still a bit far, enough for you to feel the kind of solitude off-the-grid people seek. Well, even though she’s all the way there, on quiet nights, we swear we can almost hear her raucous laugh that brings back memories of good old movies of the 90s. So, why does Julia live so far off the beaten path? We might never know. Julia Robert has had a successful life as an actress and producer. Her fame hit after headlining a few romantic comedy movies like Pretty Woman that grossed close to $464 million globally. She has won three Golden Globe awards and an Oscar. She’s done pretty well if you ask me.
Bruce Willis
If you are a fan of action movies, then you know who we are talking about. Bruce Willis of Die Hard seems to like things a bit slower when he is out of his action roles. The Die Hard star owns a home in Hailey, Idaho. Like most movies stars, a home in a distant remote location is just another location to hide out. But for Bruce Willis it’s different, he not only just lives in Idaho, but he has also invested in the town. According to sources, the successful movie's star owns a Bar called "The Mint", the Liberty Theatre, and even an abandoned drug store. Apart from businesses, he also owns a ski lodge, he plans on refurbishing it. Bruce gives us a good reason why more celebrities need to invest in businesses outside Los Angeles.
Woody Harrelson
Well, if there is anyone who has been noted for his eccentricities and extreme environmental stances, then Woody Harrelson will have to come to mind. It’s hard for the star to have been himself if he just lived in Hawaii, but no, he just doesn’t live in Hawaii, he is tucked deep in Maui, in an off-grid all solar-powered community, where all automobiles run on biofuel. It’s an interesting community with around 200 people and about 100 homes. It’s easy to think this is a commune, but it’s actually a neighborhood that’s been around for a long time. The residents in the area just didn’t want power lines installed in their properties. According to an interview between Harrelson and Mindfood Magazine, he revealed there are so many celebrities who went green even before it was ever considered a verb.
Nicole Kidman
The movie star settled in Tennessee. To get a good glimpse of what her life really is like, you need to forget the fact that she and her husband are from Australia. The couple opted to live the range life in Tennessee, in a location that is just out of Nashville. According to an interview she had with the local Tennessee paper, she found the southern state to be the best location to bring up her daughter. She revealed that she found it much easier to live the big city life and opt for her ranch that she often describes as pretty simple. Well, if you ask me, this kind of implies she is more of Cold Mountain than Moulin Rouge. They seem to like it, plus it really is the best environment to bring up your child.
Robert Redford
Robert Redford has a unique story, and it makes a lot of sense that his place of birth is where the highly hailed Sundance Film Festival takes place, and also happens to be the state where he calls home. Robert is an established actor and has lived in rural Utah for a long time. It’s also the place he spent filming most of his blockbusters such as Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Red Ford is also a long time environmentalist and has been known to advocate for the environment, so it makes a lot of sense living off the grid too. He was quoted in an interview with the Huffington Post stating that he cherishes and enjoys the wild lands of Utah. He specifically mentioned liking the Dark Canyon Wilderness area. If you know your geography well, these are the same walls that reach out to Glen Canyon.
John Travolta
If you have been reading your tabloids, then you know that John Travolta has not been living in Los Angeles for quite some time now. His home is now in Florida, and this is as recent as last February. The action stars story to living off grid is funny. We really aren’t sure if his drive to live off grid was inspired by living green or just lack of space. Well, John Travolta lives in what resembles an airport or in better terms a home that has been expanded to be able to accommodate the airplanes that he owns. Well, it seems as though there are triggers to living off grid, for some its seclusion, others just want to in contact with nature, while others just need more space for their toys.
Donald Glover
This star has gotten a lot of praise for all the work he put in for Community and Atlanta as well as his music career. It’s hard to point out where exactly the star lives but, we have narrowed it down to New York and Hawaii. He doesn’t constantly update his whereabouts like most celebrities, which is actually one of the characteristics of being an off-the-grid person (little to no social media presence). But one US Weekly article pegged him to be living in either Hawaii or New York. But what is certain is that Glover is not living in Los Angeles. He is probably going to spend much more time in Hawaii now that he is a father, good thing he chose the off-grid life.
Sandra Bullock
She was arguably at one point America’s sweetheart; however, some sources state that most fans felt Julia Robert at that time was, in fact, America’s sweetheart, a battle that was fought by fans without the stars being involved. Sandra Bullock has lived a pretty private life all of her careers, probably why some critics say Julia robbed her of her fame, but she seems happy in her privacy. She always keeps a low profile on a normal day, unless she is busy entertaining us on the Big Screens. Don’t be fooled though, she has a home in Los Angeles, most celebrities do, but you are more likely to bump into her in New Orleans than Los Angeles, where she has lived since 2009. Sandra Bullock hit the fame in the 90s with the Romantic comedy movies she headlined that sold millions of copies.
John Mayer
When you live in a world of music and celebrities, you are either in New York or Los Angeles, that’s where all the action is. However, a few platinum artists choose to live life in seclusion, just like Shania Twain. They chose to live a life away from the spotlight. They do this for a variety of reasons, while some want privacy like prince; others just want space for their toys while others like John Mayer in Montana just want to enjoy the country life. While it does not mean that he grows his own food or produces his own electricity, he definitely spends more time at the Ranch than in New York or Los Angeles. He enjoys the clean air, vast spaces, the farm, and animals. Explains why he is so creative, he makes his music where he is most comfortable.
Adele
Well, Adele is quite the darling, and just like her quite pleasant self she avoids the city life and prefers to live in quiet, seclusion with her family. Adele, who has kept her fans hooked though albums might strike you as the person who needs to live in the city to keep her music and career in check, but instead, she chooses to live in the quietude of the London suburbs over the bustling cityscape. She rarely relies on social media, which is important for her and her career, but she lets her music that for her by itself. Adele has quite a strong personality, and it’s almost hard to find anyone who doesn’t like her, probably privacy is key in the celebrity business. Some people clearly need lessons from Adele. If the seclusion makes this kind of music, then all musicians clearly need to follow this path.
P Diddy
This probably comes as a shock to most of us. P Diddy might not seem like the kind of celebrity to keep a low key and he definitely doesn’t come off as an off-the-grid person too, but, he does, in fact, like to stay out of the limelight. This he does especially when he wants to have some personal time. Don’t get fooled by his Instagram Updates, P Diddy is really Low Key, and he likes it that way. He will only be seen attending special events such as the Met Gala or Popping up at award shows. When he is not doing that, he is at home in Miami, with his family. He sold most of his properties in New Jersey, Alpine and recently even in New York. P Diddy is arguably one of the most successful names to come out of hip-hop music.
