Lifestyles of the rich and famous don't often result in stories that involve impulsive spending. If ever, it reveals how some of them have not staved off old habits that includes penny-pinching. Sometimes the penny-pinching comes off as looking cheap and there are instances where this habit comes across as being a snob that includes refusing to give tips. Apparently, much about a celebrity's spending habits reveal much about their preferences connected to their mindset about money. It is understandable knowing how most of the individuals listed below had a rough childhood, witnessing one parent or both parents shuffling a few dollars just to check if both ends are met. Coming from a humble background perhaps conditioned them to become penny pinchers. But at the end of the day, these so-called bad tippers still get to keep their fistful of dollars. Then again, it is still a lifestyle option after all. There is no doubt that some people listed here can afford the glamorous life. But the reality of having so much in life even after they have already met all of their needs prior to attaining the well-heeled financial status made them think about the future. Fame is a fickle animal after all and if some of them are famous now, they are the same individuals who are aware that the fame will eventually run out. So, they brace themselves for that day when projects will be hard to come by. Read on if you want to know about Leonardo DiCaprio and 14 other celebrities who don't spend a lot of their money.

Leonardo DiCaprio

The barometer with which DiCaprio's penny-pinching was measured was a little similar to that of Mel Gibson. For a man with his own island to stroll around on, he drives a Toyota Prius. He is not into private jets, the special utility vehicles and other luxury cars often associated with his other contemporaries. He's fine driving his own Prius to get around town. One of the biggest blockbuster hits that he had was Titanic, a film released more than 20 years ago. Titanic is still the record holder for one of the biggest blockbuster to date. But the same penny-pinching is not reported about his leading lady, Kate Winslet and ironically, DiCaprio has more box office hits under his belt. The penny-pinching is still evident with his refusal to get rid of the Prius for a flashier special utility vehicle. It comes across as prioritizing a nice car over the image. It's an attribute best shared by a man known for having several charitable endeavours to go side-by-side with his impressive filmography.

Mel Gibson

For a Hollywood A-lister that had his share of unwanted controversies that blew up in his face in the worst, most public way possible, people must have wondered how somebody like Mel Gibson could still come back into an industry that once capitalized on his notoriety. His name has become synonymous with the Lethal Weapon series - a standard set for the buddy cop movie genre. Braveheart is one Oscar winner that still keeps winning new audiences in the new millennium. But for the kind of fame and fortune that kept him relevant, who would have thought that he still prefers to travel using his old Toyota Cressida? Not that it is a budget car or anything, but it’s way cheaper than the ones driven by his contemporaries. But at least his car was never taken away from him. Add the fact that his iconic legendary movie, The Passion of the Christ will be religiously (no pun intended) watched every year as a traditional Good Friday movie.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Hunting for deals does not always mean waiting for Lord and Taylor to stage one rare opportunity for a sale. At least, as far as Sarah Jessica Parker is concerned, having been on cable TV for much of her career set her financial security up really well. She has a great celebrity status. There is still the misconception that fame and fortune changed her spending habits. Parker managed to discuss her welfare-dependent childhood without feeling bad about the experience. "I would like for people not to be aware of money, which means I have been very aware of my financial situation," she states. Apparently, learning how to get freebies and steal-level deals are hard habits to break. Despite being well-off, she's still reportedly tight-fisted when it comes to money. The Dickensian childhood must have installed in her the value of her income earned. She doesn't depend on what she has, instead she saves and invests her money.

Kristen Bell

If there is one Hollywood actress unapologetic about her penny-pinching, it is The Good Place’s actress Kristen Bell. Despite getting her biggest pay check yet from movies like Frozen and other TV projects like Veronica Mars, thanks to kids who never moved on from their fascination from Princess Anna, Bell’s penny-pinching bordered a little towards the cheapskate status. Bell is blunt enough to admit that the dress she wore for a hotel opening event based in San Diego last October 2006 was one she bought for only $45 from Target. That’s a steal. Her spending habits proved to be impressive as well upon admitting how her wedding with Dax Shepard cost the couple only $142, an unbelievable amount since Bell called it the world’s best wedding celebrated with a few friends with a courthouse judge officiating the ceremony. Even though she didn’t spend a lot of money on her wedding, she states that that was the best day of her life.

Halle Berry

The Hollywood actress is best remembered for her role as Storm in the X-Men film series. Her spending habits are more like habits earned simply by seeing her mother struggle financially. Coupled with the constant fear that she could lose everything one day due to dwindling career opportunities, Berry's financial outlook has always been forward-thinking - saving up for the day when not much else might be left. Berry joins other Hollywood celebrities that earned a street credit for scouring the flea markets and bargain bins for great deals. The temptation to blow off steam through a shopping spree or some other purchase made on the impulse is undeniable. Berry makes it a point to get to the sales rack or the designated discount bin to stay within her shopping budget. Movie projects may not always be as good as Catwoman. But as long as she has her head in the right place and her heart in her passion projects like the self-produced TV movie version of The Life of Dorothy Dandridge, her penny-pinching will help her cope through the unpredictability of Hollywood.

Tobey Maguire

With great income comes great responsibility, a reality that the former Spidey, Tobey Maguire, has instilled in himself long before the career-making film series have turned him from art house film regular to an A-list actor. The money came rushing in for playing a hero, but he constantly had to balance his heroism with the need to pay the bills. That might have helped in turning his conservative approach to finances into a habit. Playing Peter Parker in a few films in his filmography often served as a dark reminder to fans that heroism doesn’t always pay you money. It is a role that Maguire can easily relate to as he admitted living a childhood with not much money at all. It developed the penny-pinching that he learned at a young age even when the time came when income flourished, thanks to playing a cash-strapped, web-slinging comic book hero. Apparently, even after not returning to his most famous role, he is still not in the red as far as his finances are concerned.

Ed Sheeran

One of the few recording artists today not carried away with his success, Sheeran still serves as the independent musician’s wonderful dream. When your songs don’t sell like they used to before, your best bet for a secured future is a well-funded nest egg, or, in Sheeran’s case, a modest monthly allowance to tinker around for his daily expenses. It seems that fame and fortune did not make him crave for the high life and he’s fine with it. That monthly allowance is estimated at more or less than $1,200 a month. Too minuscule an amount as opposed to the record sales on iTunes and other platforms, but just enough for Sheeran to keep his feet on the ground and keep tab of his expenses. With an ability to preserve the same bank account that he used as when he was a teenager serves as proof of the well-maintained savings that will keep him sustained for the rest of his life, or at least until he turns 70.

Keira Knightley

For a Hollywood actress to bag such high profile roles as the love interest in King Arthur and the title character in Anna Karenina, fans of the British actress Keira Knightley expect her to spend her income away like her befallen character in The Duchess. Then again, her penny-pinching is based more on her need to be in touch with some of the characters that she plays like that feisty but almost penniless maiden from the Pride and Prejudice. Her penny-pinching can at least be estimated through an annual income of $50,000, just a little below the US median household income of $53,046 as of 2014. Her past earnings serve as a stark contrast to her net worth which estimates at around $50 million. Knightley owes much of that net worth to her acting roles in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Mick Jagger

Penny-pinching has its many faces with some back stories making some deals unsavoury, and Mick Jagger is one rockstar willing to pay his girls only after they agree with his terms, not that he ever fell short on cash. Known for his love for negotiating, the micro-managing levels at which he handles his finances went past his court battles with some ex-wives and stepchildren as far as their share of Jagger's fortune go. Jagger also keeps tabs of any shortcomings on the part of his promoters after he was reported to make his fans wait in a packed stadium while he crunched the numbers of his box office receipts. What happened with his fans took place in 1982 in Germany at a pit stop for The Rolling Stones European tour. Jagger remembered the box office receipt discrepancy years before and would not let any financial inaccuracies happen again. So be it if the Stones' fans had to wait an extra hour longer.

Mark Zuckerberg

One celebrity billionaire that refuses to act the part of the celebrity billionaire is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The film The Social Network can be used as a credible reference that gives the background on how he started Facebook. Making a unicorn out of a business idea that banked on human behavior online does not happen overnight, but it did not change Zuckerberg's spending habits, like his habit of not leaving tips. Eating ravioli on the same plate may seem romantic, and Zuckerberg was spotted doing this with his wife in Rome. The possibility of ordering one plate of pasta instead of two for the sake of scrimping on the bill loomed in the background. Getting into altercations with the hotel staff over minor charges is a whole new level of penny-pinching. No friends were lost in the transaction, so it seems. You don't become an internet billionaire without scrimping on even the most miscellaneous of fees.

Lady Gaga

If ever one pop superstar is willing to admit that she is big on coupons, it would be Lady Gaga. It comes across more as a vice since she is at a point in her life where she is well-off. She took a few years off of the entertainment industry before she released another album. But for all the glamorous music videos and the lavish concerts staged worldwide, the fact that she uses coupons to buy her necessities comes across as rather odd. Then again, Lady Gaga is known for being tight-fisted about buying stuff through coupons and haggling while shopping for clothes. If she could obtain a list of discounts buying clothes, she'd take that option in a heartbeat. With some of her clothes coming from notable designers, as revealed in that event where she sang for Alexander McQueen, fans found it challenging to spot which outfits were bought on a bargain and which outfits could have been sponsored. Penny-pinching indeed works wonders for the lady.

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is one golf player who will not be insulted at getting called cheap. His own former coach Hank Haney has elaborated on this bit in his tell-all book, The Big Miss. Then again, for people who find it hard to part with their hard-earned cash, it comes with the territory of penny-pinching, as it turns out, Woods is very cheap. Noted as one of the worst tippers, some fans are quick to go apologetic in discussing the said attitude towards tipping claiming that some of the richest people (reread the part about Mark Zuckerberg) don't even tip. What made the tipping story extra hot was how a waitress was interviewed and quoted for saying that Woods tipped her $5 and lost the tip after Woods found out that the waitress talked to the media. It made him look like a vengeful customer out to get his refund after a perceived slight. Woods then claimed that the waitress already received a tip prior to the $5 handed to her. Regardless of the story evolving into a he said, she said thing; it slightly confirmed what Haney said about Woods, he is cheap.

Michael Jordan

His Airness is one high profile celebrity athlete that some insiders expect to round up in the list of worst tippers. Some fans blame it on Wayne Gretzky’s chide towards Jordan as being a Cheapskate. Being the highest paid athlete in history proved to be a reputation worth keeping, at the risk of being called out for not donating enough cash to the homeless, based on Charles Barkley’s story, apparently, earning more than $1.7 billion in his playing days proved to be a blessing and a curse. It was a story that Barkley has been barking for quite a while as he compared the spending reputations of Jordan and his fellow Bull, Scottie Pippen. Neither wisecrack was denied nor confirmed by His Airness himself, nor does he seem to care. But a career built on high expectations plus the need to prove himself after ranking third at the rookie draft resulted in a rather tight-fisted approach to his finances.

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank's estimated net worth is around $40 million. However, she wasn’t always that fortunate. As a child, she didn’t grow up in the best of conditions and lived in a trailer park with her parents. Her background is a real-life rags to riches story. At 15 years old, she moved out of the trailer park and had to live out of a car until her mother had enough money to get an apartment. When doing movie roles Swank was offered $500,000 while her male counterpart was offered $10 million. She’s come a long way and saves her money. Fast-forward to now, she is big time into clipping coupons and always looks for a bargain. Hillary started her career as a child who was found by producer Susie Sachs. She took roles in the local theater and in school plays. It wasn’t until she moved to Los Angeles did she start acting professionally. It’s been an up road battle ever since.

Warren Buffett

Buffett might be the last person you expect to see on this list being the second-richest person in the world. Then again, he wouldn’t mind as he belongs to that special class of investors known only for having money the moment others started pouring in the investments. Besides, instead of spending money on lavish breakfasts in some of the best hotels that he has stayed in, he’d rather munch on breakfast served at McDonald’s every day before going to work. Despite earning the reputation as the world’s greatest investor, he still lives, to this day, in the same house he bought back in 1958 for $31,500. Living in a normal house despite earning a billionaire status where he could have purchased a bigger, more spacious houses fit for a man of his stature, is where he prefers to be. Apparently, his standard of living is not equal to those of others. He has a personal philosophy that reflects best in the simple lifestyle that he has adopted.
