For most people, marriage is a sacred union that binds two people together forever. We are told, from an early age, that our wedding day is one of the most important days of our life. Therefore, most of us spend our lives searching for that “perfect someone” whom we then marry and spend an eternity with (or so we hope to do).

Of course, not all marriages last. Sometimes people marry the wrong person. Sometimes people marry the love of their life only for them to pass away. Sometimes people marry when they are not yet ready to marry and when they are not yet ready to commit to just one person and to work on the differences that will inevitably arise.

Unfortunately, Hollywood is known as a place where marriages don’t last. Why? No one knows. Perhaps there is just too much temptation around – there’s no denying that Hollywood is full of gorgeous women and handsome men. And it is so easy to fall in love with beautiful people, especially when there is chemistry. Binding your life to just one person may make people feel like they are going to miss out on something better.

Still, while many celebrity marriages don’t work out, there is something to be said about marriages that last less than a year. Some of the celebrity marriages we discuss below barely lasted a month, let alone a whole year.

Britney Spears And Jason Alexander – 55 Hours

Remember when Britney Spears married her childhood friend Jason Alexander? Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t – their marriage lasted only 55 hours and is probably one of the shortest celebrity unions ever.

Spears and Alexander got married in Las Vegas in 2004 but the ceremony was by no means a special affair and was clearly a rash decision – Spears did not even wear a wedding dress but instead sported torn jeans, a crop top, and a baseball hat. Their wedding ceremony lasted seven minutes and cost the couple $70. Spears was walked down the aisle by a bellman as the boombox played the wedding march.

Any witnesses to the ceremony probably knew that it wouldn’t last. Everyone but the Las Vegas chapel owner Charolette Richards, that is. According to the Rolling Stones magazine, Richards thought that Spears’ and Alexander’s marriage would last forever –

“They weren't dressed in wedding attire, but it was very romantic and there was a feeling of love between them. They appeared to be extremely happy. They were laughing, but crying, too, during the ceremony. I thought it was a marriage that would last forever."

55 hours later, the couple filed for an annulment. Spears said, according to the Rolling Stone magazine, that she “lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage."

However, Alexander later said that the decision to annul their marriage was made by Spears and not him, according to Daily Mail – "I was in love with her. … I feel like she felt the same way.” Unfortunately, she obviously didn't.

Drew Barrymore And Tom Green – 9 Months

Drew Barrymore and Tom Green got married in 2001 after a year-long engagement. However, their engagement proved to be far longer than their marriage – the couple separated nine months after their wedding ceremony took place.

Green cited irreconcilable difference as the reason for their divorce, and, at the time, said according to People magazine – “Drew is a wonderful woman. I love her very much. I wish our marriage could have worked out. I wish her much happiness.”

Later, in an interview with Oprah, Green said that his marriage to Barrymore was nothing more than a “crazy, whirlwind of a time.” According to Huffington Post, his exact words were –

“It was just a very short period of time that I had a brief marriage. I don’t really tend to talk about it that much comfortably publicly. All of that was part of that sort of crazy, whirlwind of a time.”

Green also added that he and Barrymore have not kept in touch – “I haven’t talked to her in many, many years. I’m glad she’s doing great. I’m really happy that she’s doing good.”

Barrymore did not comment on her marriage – or her divorce – to Tom Green neither at the time nor later. Barrymore’s marriage to Green was not her first marriage – she previously got engaged to and married a bartender named Jeremy Thomas after only six weeks of knowing him. Their marriage was even shorter – the couple divorced after two months. In 2012, Barrymore also married the actor Will Kopelman but once again this union was not to last – they divorced in 2016.

Kim Kardashian And Kris Humphries – 72 Days

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries got engaged seven months after first meeting and soon enough got married. Their wedding ceremony was an extravagant affair that was attended by 450 guests, including celebrities such as Eva Longoria and Lindsay Lohan.

Apparently, Kardashian’s and Humphries’s wedding cost around $10 million with the cake costing around $20,000 on its own. Unfortunately, even the luxurious wedding could not save the couple’s marriage – they separated only 72 days later.

While many believed – and still do – that their marriage was nothing but a big hoax and a publicity stunt meant to further inflate the fame of the Kardashian family, Kim insisted that it was very much real and that the reason she got married was because she was scared of growing older.

According to Daily Mail, Kim said, in an interview with Andy Cohen – “I just thought, 'Holy s**t, I'm 30 years old, I better get this together, I better get married. I think a lot of girls do go through that where they freak out thinking they're getting old and have to figure it out, all their friends are having kids. It was more of that situation. [...] I knew on honeymoon it wasn't going to work out.”

Jim Carrey And Lauren Holly –10 Months

Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly first met on the set of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective but since Holly did not get the part she was going for it was not until they were both co-stars on the by now iconic comedy Dumb & Dumber that they got to know each other properly.

The lovestruck couple got married in a private mountain-top ceremony in September, 1996 but unfortunately their union was short-lasting – they got divorced in July 1997 even though at first it seemed like they would remain together forever. Indeed, according to People magazine, at the time of the wedding Carrey even said – “Marriage has a calming effect on me.”

When Carrey was asked whether he was not worried that Holly was only after him because of his status and wealth, he said, according to E Online

“No. With Lauren, I know she'd be with me if I were on a soap. There are certain PR advantages to being with me, and Lauren knows that, too, but the bottom line is she's made her way in this world, she's proven herself."

Interestingly, after their divorce, Holly was entitled to half of Carrey’s earnings during their time together. She received $9.6 million from the actor.

The couple cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their divorce but some have speculated that it was Carrey’s temper that pushed Holly away. Others have argued that it was Carrey’s successful career - and Holly's less than successful one - that ended the couple’s marriage. According to People magazine, an anonymous source said – “She wanted to prove she could go out on her own.”

Elizabeth Moss And Fred Armisen – 8 Months

Mad Men and The Handmaid’s Tale actress Elizabeth Moss married Fred Armisen in October 2009 after a year of dating. Eight months later, in June 2010 the couple was already divorced. Apparently, Armisen was a terrible husband so much so that Moss said he actually isn’t normal.

According to Huffington Post, in 2012 – a year after their marriage ended – Moss said – “One of the greatest things I heard someone say about him is, ‘He’s so great at doing impersonations. But the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person. To me, that sums it up.”

It might sound a bit harsh, but Armisen himself admitted that he was a terrible husband. He admitted that he is all in at the start of the relationship but eventually gets bored of being with the same woman.

According to Huffington Post, Armisen said – “I want it all ... fast. I want to be married, I want to live together ... and then somewhere around a year or two years, I get freaked out. I freak out emotionally and then I actually feel like ‘Oh my God, who’s this stranger in my house?”

Still, nowadays Moss thinks that everything turned out for the best, even if her marriage to Armisen was a disaster. The actress said, according to LA Times – “Looking back, I feel like I was really young, and at the time I didn't think that I was that young. It was extremely traumatic and awful and horrible. At the same time, it turned out for the best."

Colin Farrell And Amelia Warner – About 4 Months

Young love often results in rushed marriages which more often than not result in quick divorces. That’s exactly what happened to the actor Colin Farrell and the actress Amelia Warner – the pair quickly fell in love, got married, fell out of love and separated. And it all just took four months or so, although to be fair their marriage wasn't really legal.

If you can recall, Farrell and Warner started dating in 2000 and got married on a beach in Tahiti in 2001 when he was 25 years old and she was 20 years old. It seemed like their relationship – and their marriage, which turned out to be illegal – was going to last forever. Warner’s mother even said, according to Daily Edge

“It’s great they’ve found each other. I love him and it’s a relief for me that Millie’s met someone who looks after her and who she can trust. It’s rare that they’re both young but so ready to commit. And she didn’t have to kiss many frogs before she found her prince!”

After the couple went their separate ways, Farrell said, according to Blasting News, that their marriage was “too fast and too young." The actor even had Warner’s name tattooed on his ring finger.

Renee Zellweger And Kenny Chesney – 4 Months

Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney got married in May 2005 but their marriage lasted only four months before the couple decided to go their separate ways. At the time of the annulment, the actress cited “fraud” as the reason for the termination of hers and Chesney’s marriage.

Of course, this instantly led to rumors that Chesney was swinging for the other team and that he had failed to mention it to Zellweger prior to their union. The actress was quick to assure everyone that the word “fraud” was used just as a legal term and by no means as a character description.

Years later, Zellweger admitted that the rumors of Chesney not being straight actually hurt her quite a bit. Indeed, according to Page Six, Zellweger said –

“It made me sad that somehow people were using that as a way to be cruel and calling someone gay as a pejorative, which has fateful consequences. Of course, there’s the bigger-picture problem of why anyone had to make up a story at all.”

Chesney for his part explained the reason behind the rushed marriage and the quick divorce to Oprah by saying, according to Hollywood Life, that he simply panicked – “The idea of marriage made me lose my identity.” Still, he called Zellweger a “sweet soul”, which is quite nice.

Eddie Murphy And Tracey Edmonds – 2 Weeks

Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds got married in a spiritual ceremony in Bora Bora which apparently cost half a million dollars, claiming that they would have a legally binding wedding ceremony when they returned back to the United States. However, that never happened – the couple left Bora Bora separately, and not on good terms.

While the couple was still on their honeymoon, Murphy apparently said, according to People magazine that he was incredibly happy – “I’m so happy, I’m over the moon.”

In addition, according to People magazine, an anonymous source knew from the very beginning that Murphy’s and Edmond’s union would not last – “He would go off to smoke with his buddies. [Guests] could hear them yelling and her crying during the honeymoon evenings. It was pretty dramatic.”

So, what was the cause of the couple’s arguing? Apparently, Murphy and Edmonds did not agree on quite a few things. For starters, Murphy apparently wanted Edmonds to take his name, something she was not prepared to do. In addition, Edmonds wanted Murphy’s mother and his friend to move out of his L.A house so that they could live there on their own. Plus, some say that Murphy’s mother never likes Edmonds which further complicated things.

Shortly after the couple decided to separate, they released the following statement, according to Access Online – “After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further. While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”

Mario Lopez And Ali Landry – 18 Days

Unlike some of the celebrities featured on this list, Saved by the Bell actor Mario Lopez and Ali Landry did not rush into marriage. Indeed, the couple dated for six years before deciding to tie the knot.

However, their special day was not exactly perfect, at least not for Landry who, days before the wedding, heard that her husband-to-be was not being truthful to her. According to Huffington Post, Landry confessed to Oprah –

“I had found out right before the wedding some infidelities. I approached him and he swore up and down it was not true. My little voice inside me was telling me that there’s something going on.  All of my friends and family were flying down to this wedding in Mexico. So, I went through with the wedding.”

The pair got married and two weeks later, got an annulment – Landry had tapped the phone and had her suspicions that Lopez was straying confirmed, despite the fact that he denied it for years.

Lopez later confessed in his memoirs –titled Just Between Us – that he had indeed hurt on Landy before the wedding (during his bachelor party) and that it was then that he realized that he didn’t love her, according to Daily Mail – “When it was time to return home, lightning hit me with the truth: I wasn’t in love. But I walked down the aisle. Ali was hurt and angry, rightfully so.” This just shows that you should always listen to that little voice inside your head for more often than not, it is right.

Jennifer Lopez And Cris Judd – About 7 Months

Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd met when the latter was hired to direct her music video Love Don’t Cost a Thing. Their marriage was quite rushed – Lopez had just broken up with Puff Daddy – and as a result, it came as no surprise when the couple decided to separate seven months later.

Judd later confessed that he found his marriage to Lopez to be incredibly tough, especially because he no longer had any privacy. He said, according to Daily Mail

“You know it's very tough. Your privacy is breached. You're no longer a normal person. [Our wedding] was a circus. I think several people got arrested trying to climb up a mountain... trying to sneak in. We actually rented the airspace."

Judd also added that during his brief marriage to Lopez he gave up his privacy and learned to live in the spotlight, if only temporarily – “You kind of have to take it and accept it and embrace it. Once you stop fighting it, it smoothes itself over. If you try to keep that privacy, it drives you nuts and that's why people break." Interestingly, Judd claimed that it wasn’t the limelight and the breach of privacy that ended their marriage. Rather, he insinuated that Lopez doesn’t work on her relationships.

According to Daily Mail, Lopez remembers Judd fondly – “I've dated two dancers. One, I had a brief marriage with, Cris Judd, who is an amazing person and whom I love.”

Carmen Electra And Dennis Rodman – 9 Days

When Carmen Electra started dating Dennis Rodman, Electra’s friends couldn’t understand why she was with him. But according to Daily Mail, Electra said that was only because no one could see what she did –

“I remember meeting Dennis and Dennis was the life of the party. He was fun. He had a reputation for being a bad-boy. What I saw was a gentle giant in a lot of pain. We understood each other.”

Not long after, Electra and Rodman got married in Las Vegas in 1998 and their marriage caused quite a lot of gossip, especially when Rodman’s publicist stated that his client may have been intoxicated at the time of the ceremony.

Of course, Electra and Rodman claimed that their marriage was absolutely real but then nine days later filed for an annulment. Later, Electra said, according to Time, that their decision to get married in Las Vegas was certainly a questionable one – “It's easy to get caught up in a moment. You think it's romantic, but then you realize, 'God, we did it in Vegas?' It's like getting a cheeseburger at a fast-food restaurant."

Still, according to Daily Mail Electra has said that their relationship was not all bad – “Our relationship was very passionate. When it was good, it was amazing. And when it was bad, it was the worst.”

Chad Michael Murray And Sophia Bush – 5 Months

The actor Chad Michael Murray and the actress Sophia Bush met on the set of One Tree Hill. It was there that they fell in love and shortly after, decided to get married. Murray and Bush tied the knot in 2005 in a beautiful seaside ceremony but five months later the couple separated.

Unfortunately, the pair still had to continue working alongside each other on One Tree Hill but lost contact for good when Murray left the series in 2009.

According to E Online, Bush eventually learned how to deal with working alongside her ex-husband – “At the end of the day, we're grownups, and I actually think it's interesting that when people split in a way that's unpleasant, they usually just go on quite literally hating each other—or the person in my situation hates the other person, whatever—but when you have to work with somebody for another half a decade, you kind of have to deal with it. Because for me, at the end of the day, my job is my priority. And so I think at the end of it, it really let me just let go of it."

However, it is quite obvious that Bush does not have a good opinion of her ex-husband. When she was asked to make a comment about Murray, she replied with – “My mother once said to me that if you don't have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all."

She also went on to add that at the time of their marriage both her and Murray were silly little kids who should have never been allowed to tie the knot – “We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place. To all the other costars who've worked it out, more power to you."

Kid Rock And Pamela Anderson – 4 Months

Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock dated between 2001 and 2003 and tied the knot in 2006. The couple got married on a luxury yacht in Saint Tropez and had planned plenty more weddings – with each other – in various locations, such as Malibu, California, and Nashville. At the time, Anderson wrote enthusiastically about her wedding on her website, according to MTV

“Now I'm definitely rocking the most ... MRS ROCK. Best romantic wedding of all time. Rock n roll wedding."

Four months later, the couple filed for divorce. It was granted to them in 2007. In a recent interview, Anderson said that she hasn’t spoken to Kid Rock since their divorce. She hasn’t talked much about her marriage to him or why exactly they separated.

Kid Rock, on the other hand, had lots to say. His reason for divorce? Apparently, once he married Anderson his life became a circus. He said, according to Access Online – “I knew it was a bad career move to begin with to get involved with her and everything around her. Your life becomes this frickin’ circus, because that’s what she wants is this media attention and my first love is music, and now you gotta look like the clown because you’re involved with her.”

Bradley Cooper And Jennifer Esposito – 4 Months

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito got married in 2006 in a very private wedding ceremony. Indeed, no one even knew where or when the ceremony took place but perhaps the fact that we never got to witness it is for the better. After all, their union lasted only four months.

After their divorce, Cooper confessed that they eventually both realized that they had made a mistake, according to CBS News – “It was just something that happened. The good thing is, we both realized it...Sometimes you just realize it. It just wasn't right. It's interesting...things happen!"

Esposito made no comment on her very short marriage to Cooper but she did publish a book titled Jennifer’s Way: My Journey with Celiac Disease – What Doctors Don’t Tell You and How You Can Learn to Live Again, in which she slams an unidentified ex-lover. Many people think that this ex-lover is none other than Cooper.

In the book, Esposito writes, according to People magazine – “He was funny, smart, cocky, arrogant, and a master manipulator. I didn’t necessarily find him that attractive, but I figured that I could enjoy his sense of humor and nonsense for a while. We had fun, but he also had a mean, cold side. His personality could flip on a dime.”

However, Esposito refused to confirm that the passage did indeed refer to Cooper and said that the book is about her journey with celiac disease and nothing else.

Nicolas Cage And Lisa Marie Presley – 3 Months

Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley met 17 years ago – in 2000 – at Johnny Ramone’s birthday party. They instantly fell for each other and an on-again-off-again relationship followed. Soon enough, however, the couple decided that they had enough of playing around and decided to get married. And so they did – they married in a Hawaii ceremony in August 2002.

By November, Cage had filed for divorce. Presley later allegedly said that they shouldn’t have gotten married in the first place. In addition, according to ABC News, Presley also said –

“We honestly were joking, thinking we are like the new millennium version of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor at this point. I mean we are going to knock each other off.”

Both Cage and Presley are on good terms and do not regret their marriage. Years later, Cage said, in an interview with Elvis Australia – “Yeah it’s sad and I miss her every day. [...] Sometimes I wish we wouldn’t have rushed the marriage and sometimes i regret rushing the divorce but it just seemed like it wasn’t going to change.”

When asked if maybe they should try and re-ignite their spark, Cage said – “The thing that we have now, which is great. We’re friends. We talk and we’re friends. And in a lot of ways she was like a best friend to me because I didn’t want anything from her and she didn’t want anything from me.”
